Saves 3 MP of which 1 was on Gicquel's serve.
Good display from James.

pretty good match, could have gone either way. giquel wasn;t too bad especially when he is playing blake.

only saw the very end but MG was very tight on the match points. in fairness to Blake he came up with a really good bh return off a big serve on the 2nd one.

Amazing, Blake waited 187 tournaments to win such a match...

watched the last set tiebreak, the BH return blake hit down 4-5 was just awesome!!! gicquel, he had like 2 or 3 match points there in the tiebreak, but was not able to close the deal, blake just hung in there and got the W in the end.

well done JB, moving on.

Yeah, I admit Gicquel was tight on 2 of the 3 matchpoints but Blake did hit a pretty amazing return at 4-5* with Gicquel serving.
Didn't know James was capable of pulling this out. Normally he hits the ball like a blind bull in tight situations.

Tight breaker. James got lucky.

Great match! Gicquel did get a little tight on a few shots on the tie- break though, such as the backhand at 5-6. Well done James, good luck next round.

Nice for James to win a couple of close ones.

Well Blake is finally winning matches on mental toughness.
Coul he possibly make one more run into the top 15?
We will see.

Gicquel was too tentative when he had MP's.

Blake was fortunate for Gicquel to make very easy errors.

You could tell Blake was very relieved with his win, some great points in that 3rd set tiebreaker, entertaining to watch. Well done James!

This should give Blake a little confidence for the next tight match he's in. I'm curious to see how this season pans out for him with his new coach.

Surprised Gicquel ran him so close - he's notoriously hopeless on hard courts outside the slams. 3/20 as a dog, the wins over HT Lee 2006, Gulbis in one of his moods, and Troicki (3-0 ret.) Half the time he just turns up for the cheque, maybe beats some nobody first round at best, then goes on holiday.

true...seems he's not as "go for broke" on every single shot and may actually think at times

Gicquel is one of those players that is easy to underestimate imo, despite some of his performances. :o

Nice that Blake toughed out a win such as this, and that should boost his confidence a little more. Hoping he can finish the year somewhere inside the top 25-30, but he'll certainly have to do it the hard way considering that the vast majority of his points fall off in the first half of the season. :help:
