I think it's time to create a thread for the next season :rocker2:

Ernests will play in Doha first (he barely got in), the week after that he'll probably have to play qualifying at either Auckland or Sydney (or perhaps he'll just spend it practicing) and then he'll play the AO main draw :D

Yeah, me too  I'm just reposting these pictures from the other thread, Ernests will probably be wearing this :)

this is the one ;) i bet he will look good on those

but I'm afraid that he's gonna wear yellow again  like last year, he wore the blue one in the ad pics, but he just put on yellow shirts on court :(

I guess we're all hoping for a better season than last year.. But then again, that shouldn't be so hard to achieve, should it?

Nice thread title :) squeeeee!! I can't wait! Mainly cos im gonna see him (hopefully) but because of his rank he will most definetley be versing a top 10 player:hysteric: But, if he does what he says (practice, practice, practice!!!) I think he could really have a shot! I hope i will see him, and get some nice shots!:D Is anyone else going?

the entry lists of the week after AO were out and he's not in any of them. I think he wants to take a week off (actually, it'll be two if he lost early at AO :p) before going to America. It will be better practicing there than playing one tournament in Europe, where he only has 20 points to defend :)

points to defend... this is not a good argument upon which to base any speculation, as he practically has no points to defend this year. :)

well, he has points to defend  he is neither Deniss nor Karlis who have 15 and 10 ptsI hope Ernests thinks like you do. Im afraid that to him defending a first round = having virtually nothing to defend.
Anyway, it is not important what he has to defend: we (him included) should all focus on what he has to conquer:)

[1] Roger Federer (SUI) - Christophe Rochus (BEL)
Evgeny Korolev (RUS) - Martin Vassallo Arguello (ARG)
Oscar Hernandez (ESP) - Andreas Seppi (ITA)
Ernests Gulbis (LAT) - [6] Albert Montanes (ESP)

Not a bad draw, I think  He's never played against Federer, I hope he can do it here :D Not that I take any wins for granted but he should be able to beat at least Montanes and Hernandez. Seppi might be a bit more difficult but far from impossible.

Go Ernest :rocker2:

It was during the first set (I think) when Seppi won a challenge and instead of replaying the point the umpire said it was a winner. Ernests was telling the umpire that he had long arms and could have reached the shot so it shouldn't have been a winner. (the commentator laughed and said "hes telling the umpire he has long arms" I didn't really hear him say this but he was motioning along his arm)

And no Dave hasn't been there this tournament. Is it the end of Dave? *cue dun dun dun music* :p

Let me make a quick recap for historical purposes :)

Federer def. Gulbis 6-2 4-6 6-4

Ernests served first. He won his first service game to make it 1-0 but then he lost the next three games. When he was serving at 1-3 he was 0-40 down but he saved all the break points :worship: It didn't help much though because a couple of douces later he still got broken. Then Federer held and it was 1-5. Ernests was making so many unforced errors, it was painful to watch. He was in danger of being broken again but he held himself together and finally held. It was a good thing too :) Because he could serve first in the second set. Again, he almost got broken but in the end he held for 1-0. He started serving much better in the second set and Federer's level dropped a bit so Ernie had chances to break him. On one BP, he got a wrong line call but he didn't have any challenges left so Federer got the point  Ernests made some interesting hand gestures  But the good thing was that he didn't let this situation upset him too much and he took the first BP he had at 5-4 40-30 and broke for the set :yeah:

The third set was pretty similar to the second one, except that Ernests didn't win it. Both had chances to break, Fed did so at 2-2 and everyone thought that was it but then Ernie broke back in the next game  But Federer broke again at 4-4 and that was really it :awww: I have to say though that I didn't expect Ernest to win even a set so I'm happy with this result :)

Because there are people who didn't watch it and because we'll have forgotten about this match in half a year and because Ernest will gain many new fans in the next years and they will want to know how his first match against Roger went so they'll be able to come here and read about it :)

but-it's-ok
01-07-2010, 06:52 PM

01-07-2010, 06:53 PM
My hardest part of the match was when he played so badly in the 1st set :sobbing: For those who knows me on FB properly knows that Roger is my favorite as well, and I was so happy that two of my all time favorites would play each other for the first time. After he got broken the second time in the 1st set, I even didn't want to watch anymore :crying2:

I wish this was a best-of-five match, he would have pushed Federer into the fifth and had a big chance to win as Federer today didn't play well either.

Anyway, enough said, the match is over  I don't even know if I want to watch it again

I just hope that he will take this to boost his confidence in future matches rather than let it let him down with the thought that he could have won if he didn't make so many silly mistakes :banghead:

I wasn't really sure where to put this (or if anyone wanted to read it) but here is what Fed had to say about Ernests. I'm sorry but I don't like Fed so this made me  Anyway, did they interview Ernests at all? I'm guessing not but I think they should have.

Reigning ATP World Tour Champion Roger Federer was made to work hard for his semi-final berth at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open Thursday, losing the second set to Latvian Ernests Gulbis before prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tennis tournament in Doha.

"It’s only the first time I’ve ever played him so obviously I don’t know as much as maybe other opponents," said Federer. "But I was impressed by his ball-striking and his abilities. I knew that beforehand as well, that’s why I’m happy to come through against him because it was rather tight towards the end."

The Swiss comfortably secured the opening set of the pair’s first meeting, taking advantage of Gulbis’ unforced errors to break serve twice. However, his Latvian opponent provided a sterner challenge in the second set and, after missing opportunities to break serve in the eighth game, took his chance in Federer’s following service game to level the match as the top seed scooped a backhand volley up and wide.

Federer struggled to close out Gulbis’ challenge in the third set, squandering a service-break advantage as he paid the price for a lack of first serves and the Latvian levelled at 3-3. However, in the pursuit of his third Doha title, Federer proved to have the edge in the deciding stages, breaking Gulbis’ serve in the ninth game as the tight 21 year old over hit a forehand and serving out the victory after one hour and 47 minutes.

"I don’t think he served his best at the end of the game; he made some errors," said Federer. "I thought it was more that he gave it to me than I had to work for it, but that tends to happen when you build pressure, momentum and everythingGood effort to break him twice in the first set and the third set, especially the way he was serving in the second set – he went off on a tear for quite a while, didn’t make it easy for me – but I hung in there, didn’t get frustrated."

he's not in the QD of Auckland either
We don't know if he asks for a WC in Auckland or Sydney or not but I prefer him to just come to Melbourne and practice rather than play one more tournament. It's not about how many tournaments he plays, it's about how deeply he can go in one.

No, I think it would be best for him to go to Australia and get use to the courts and conditions. But that's just my opinion. :p

I just think he needs to practice in the hot conditions and get practice on the courts more then getting practice in on the other courts. But I see your point and I've made my point so we just have to wait and see what happens!

Of course we are fans and we want to see him play as often as possible, but I think he made a wise move when deciding not to play Auckland. It is troublesome if he goes to NZ from Doha, then goes back to Melbourne to play AO in harsh condition. I really hope that he can make some surprises at AO this year.

Speaking about the draw - it's a really good draw compared to some he's been getting the last couple of years - Nadal, Murray, or Roddick in the first or second round  We might put Davydenko in the same category of top players but 3rd round is not as bad :) If Ernests manages to get there and play against Davy and maybe win a set I'll be more than satisfied with this tournament :yeah:

There is a stream, at least on Eurosport player.

It depends on how long the previous matches last. Play starts at midnight UK time. I would say 5 hours is the minimum, maybe 6 or even 7 hours so that would put the starting time between 5:00-7:00 GMT. If you get up at 7 you'll probably be able to catch at least the last part of the match.

I learned finally today, not to expect anything from Ernests,I knew he'd lose if Monaco was 100% fit,he has the kind of game Ernests hates,JM is everything Ernests isn't consistent, solid, good defensively.

Because it was so bad Ernests will be tempted to forget this quickly, but he should analyse it,his desire was lacking,I don't understand it,a 1st round of GS,a chance to beat a seed, defend his points?

I also want to say that maybe the speed of the court didn't help, but not really an excuse.

Now he may not make MD of IW,Miami, all because of this one match.

oh boy... I always thought last year's second round loss to Andreev was kind of decisive for the rest of the season (or at least part of it) but I sure hope this match doesn't mean anything for the rest of this season...

This is very Off Topic, but for anyone who watched the stream of the Gulbis-Monaco match on ESPN360 or elsewhere, Jim Courier(?) made a remark comparing Gulbis to another player who didn't live up to his potential, or wouldn't really fight during a match, something of this nature. Who was the player/person? I can't remember and it's driving me nuts.

Again, sorry for such a meaningless/OT comment after this loss :awww:

Hey guys im in Melbourne at the moment!! Woo!
Well, here is my story
I arrived at Melbourne Park so excited - i left dissapointed.
I started wandering around for a while and was just about to go back to Hisense until i saw Robin Soderling and Ryan Harrisoon(apparently some american prodigy) I looked over to see who else was there and there ernests was talking to this other player(well, i actually wouldn't know - but i am pretty sure he had a coach telling him some things) I have some photos of him - but i can't upload them now:mad: So by the time i realised it was actually Ernests i sprinted over to the side he was on. I was pretty much shaking all over and like "OMG - ERNESTs, finally!!" I was pretty much just standing there gaping and i went to go and sit on the stands. I said "Excuse may i get through" I looked up to realise it was AINARS!! OMGGGGGG!! He just moved he legs in slightly looked at my I LOVE ERNESTS GULBIS tee and smiled :D I took my seat and started going all trigger happy. Just as i was getting my pics - he decides to swap ends so i ran over and i was pretty much two metres away from the guy i follow 24/7! I got some more pics and then a really funny moment happened :D The guys he was hitting with (the unknown player) and then some brazillian/spanish player hitting with his hitting partner. The hitting partner hit a ball to the spanish/brazillian player and Ernests was talking to Hernan..It was just about to hit ernests and the hitting partner was like BALL BALL BALL! The player just got it and then Ernests turned back and was like "What??!" And then they were laughing for like 2 minutes :D haha (sorry, i suck at explaining) Anyway, the players left and then Ernests and Hernan were hitting...he was practicing returning volleys. Hernan looked me straight in the eye when he looked at my shirt and was laughing :D I don't know if Ernests noticed it. Before i knew it they were finished  A few guys came over and patted him on the back and shook his hand and he was off - i was way to starstruck to ask fro anything - not even a signature. I have to admit - i stalked him back with his dad to where it went into the "RESTRICTED ZONE" :( I was sad - i stayed there a bit and Ern kept popping his head back out :p No idea why though - it was cute, he was shaved, and wearing a blue tee with something on it - me and ernests share the same thing - we aren't good at analysis.

Finally, Blake was off and it was Ernie's turn :D As i was waiting to get into the stand i saw Hernan waiting and looked quite pissy - then he is like "Excuse me, Sorry - i have to get in" haha :D Then a american couple asked me who was next and i said - "Ernests Gulbis verse Juan Monaco" he simply replied. "Oh yeah, that rich kid" OMG i seriously had a go at him saying who cares if he was and then guess who happens to pop his head round the corner while we were lining up - AINARS!! AGAIN!! Hahaha :D So i finally got a seat in the very front on the side where erno was and got a few photos of me and ernests in the background. ;) Finally they started - he won the toss and chose to serve!! Oh yeah his fans - OMG everyone on my side was going for him i swear to god - and of course his true latvian fans - they had some pretty good cheers going on - i really wanted to go and learn some but there was simply no room :D Anyway - THE MATCH!!
So, he got off to a pretty poor start. He got himself out of trouble with his serve. He finally broke him and pretty much was handed the set. He was wearing the gorgeous teal by the way :D I think Ernests was more worried about his raquet more than anything and simply didn't get into the grove at all. He was throwing his raquet for pretty much no reason and his attitude was pretty immature if you ask me. He kept looking at his coach and dad and by the end of the second set was shaking his head and yelling about even a fault. He also got a code violation for hitting a ball which was a drop shot from Monaco which he didn't get. I think it went out of Melbourne park :D I was pretty pissed at his play - the first time i watch ern he loses. I am not saying he shouldn't have lost - but it should have been closer. I still like him - it is just i think he really acted like a spoilt brat - i must say. All he was worried about was his raquet and to me didn't appreciate the fans at all. In the 2nd set towards the end - he was sitting down and i was re applying my sunscreen he was literally staring at me :) Like he forgot to put on his sunscreen i smiled and and did a fist pump i think it got him motivated - but he went for a bit too much. Then as he lost the 2nd set he pretty much lost it. I had to leave :( After the second set because we were meeting some cousins who we hadn't seen in years :( I think he wasn't focussed enough, and maybe if he had played 2nd it might have been different - or won the second set. Also, he loved my signs (ill upload a pic) I was holding up I love Ernie and it caught his attention. I guess, in a way i am happy that i saw him - but i guess i wish he had won. By the end of the second set Ainars had given up as well - i think he thought he was acting pretty childish and had his cap over his face and leaning back - i am pretty sure he was sleeping LOL!

Overall, i was pretty happy about seeing him but not about his play. I hope i see him next year :D

Thank you for the report, Stelle! It's fun how the stories about the first time a fan meets Ernests (or, probably, any other idol of hers) show some similarities. :)
All he was worried about was his raquet and to me didn't appreciate the fans at all.
Typical Ernests. Don't get angry if you get the feeling he doesn't appreciate the fans. He would just seldom let you know he appreciates fans. I had the same reaction as you when I started supporting him at tournaments, but that's Ernests. He doesn't show... although Im not 100% sure he doesn't care if he has fans or not, having some support from the stands or getting total silencen can not be all the same to him.

By the end of the second set Ainars had given up as well - i think he thought he was acting pretty childish and had his cap over his face and leaning back - i am pretty sure he was sleeping LOL!
Wise Ainars! ah ah

I don't think he acted childish. He showed some emotions. That's ok for me.

The first 2 sets have been very tight. When he lost the tiebreak in second set, he lost all his confidence. This was kinda shocking to see. Monaco was a more tough opponent than everyone expected, even the bookies.

I guess his dad didn't cover his face before Ernests was broken twice in last set.

I feel really sorry for Ernests.

Estelle, I just want to know. Is English your first language?

btw. Monaco defeated Llodra when he was 2 sets down and had to play tiebreak in 3rd set. I hope this shows everyone what for tough player he can be.

btw. Monaco defeated Llodra when he was 2 sets down and had to play tiebreak in 3rd set. I hope this shows everyone what for tough player he can be.No one ever thought nor said Monaco is not a tough player; all the opposite, instead. Pico is a good player (and one of my favourite ones) but, knowing him and knowing Ernests, I was reasonably thinking/hoping Ernests would have beaten him on this surface.
Fact is Monaco fought (as you said, again Llodra, too), Ernests didn't. That's the difference and what Erno lacks.
