 banana party. Seems like a decent player and it's interesting that outside of this tournament he has stuck largely to playing on the mens tour this year.

Another tennis player from the Gold Coast, Ben attended The Southport School with Bernard Tomic back in the day and along with Tomic the Gold Coast are certainly producing a lot of our future prospects i.e Bernard, Ben, Mav Banes, Alex Sanders, Jared Easton and of course Jason Kubler is from Brisbane. I'm not sure what it is but tennis players from south east Queensland just seem to be thriving on the tour.

It is not because we just gained an ATP tournament (although this will certainly help in the future) but something that I think Tennis Australia should really be supporting is the Pat Cash Tennis Academy. That place has produced Mav Banes, Jared Easton, Alex Sanders and even Monika Wejnert! just an unbelivable amount of talent at that club. Perhaps it is the climate of the Gold Coast that really helps players, A more consistantly warm climate helps them to acclimatise to conditions quicker? I'm not sure what it is but they are very good.

I played inter-school tennis there last year and the courts are fairly good and they do have something like twelve hard courts and one clay court but they are just really good. Anyway good luck to Ben next week in the AO WC Playoff, hopefully he can get a win or two and maybe progress to the quarters.

AO Maindraw Wildcard Playoff

Blue Group: Brydan Klein, Kaden Hensel, James Duckworth, Jason Kubler
Green Group: Nick Lindahl, James Lemke, Matt Reid, Ben Mitchell
Magenta Group: Greg Jones, John Millman, Dane Propoggia, Dane Kelly
Yellow Group: Bernard Tomic, Matthew Ebden, JP Smith, Kris Balakrishnan

He plays his first match against James Lamke today. Not a bad group, and a good run here could see him sneak in for a AO QWC. Good luck Ben.

jmf07

He is 16 and will most likely play at the Aus Open qualies thanks mainly to the youth policy and he did play Brisbane Qualies but was beaten in straights by Joel Lindner.

How old is this guy and is he going to play AUS OPEN qualies and why didnt he play in Brisbane qualies.

Ben Mitchell is 17, 18 in November, a month younger than Bernard. I would say its about 50/50 chance of him playing Aus Open qualies although with the recent youth push by TA I'd say that 50/50 is now about 70/30 that he'll get one.

I really wish people would look at the draws before saying things. Ben Mitchell DID play Brisbane qualies, he lost in the first round to Joel Lindner 6-4 6-2. Ben doesn't even have a junior ranking anymore because he has been playing seniors for a while now, so unless TA want to give a wildcard to Ben he won't be playing Aus Open juniors this year. He is almost ranked inside the top 1000 now which isn't a bad effort and according to TA he needs to get into the top 750 soon otherwise they'll cut his funding.

Ben is actually tall enough to make a bit of a go on the seniors tour so I guess we'll see some more of Ben Mitchell in the years to come.

Oh yeah i forgot and how old in Lindner, well he player pretty well against Nick Lindahl he tested him in three sets. I hope Ben gets into the qualifying but i dont wont smeets to miss out he is a very good player when he is playing well and gets a few matches under his belt.

Hewitt2010
01-12-2010, 10:48 AM
He is going to play Jan Minar in the first round of the AUS OPEN qualies, i hope he can win Mitchell, Duckworth and Saville have got good match ups, Berman isnt he American so why does it say AUS on the draw sheet.

jmf07
01-12-2010, 04:21 PM
I think he plays Arnaboldi which is one of the easier matchups that he could get. It will be an achievement for the young guys just to be competitive in their matches let alone winning them. Mitchell has the easiest matchup out of the four of them I think.

Berman is a wierd one. Born in South Africa went to NZ and was raised there and moved and represented America but bobbed up at a couple of Australian futures before participating in the national under 18's and now representing Australia in the Aus Open qualies draw. I just hope he is serious about representing Australia.

Rafael Nadal may be gone from the men’s event but his influence lives on in the juniors in the presence of Australian Ben Mitchell, who took out the top seed and world No.1 Daniel Berta of Sweden 62 61 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals.

The 17-year-old practised twice with Nadal in the build-up to the boys’ event and the effects were clear to see as Mitchell destroyed the hopes of Berta in stunning fashion. “I didn’t expect it to be that easy,” Mitchell said. “But I was very solid out there and moving well and just making him make too many mistakes.”

Mitchell was roped in by Nadal last weekend to help him prepare for his singles matches, something that came as a big surprise to the Australian. "My coach knows I get quite nervous so he only told me two minutes before we got on the court,” Mitchell said. “Hitting with Nadal I was kind of beyond nervous. But knowing I can keep up with Rafa, going toe to toe, gave me a huge confidence boost. I was thinking if I can keep up with Nadal then surely I can rally with anyone in the juniors.”

Mitchell said it was hard to explain just how much power and spin Nadal could produce. “I was hitting the ball straight to him and he was pretty much running me ragged,” he said. “I wanted him to give me the drinks signal, but it didn’t happen for about half an hour. He was quite nice. The second time we hit, he said hello, how are you and he said good luck for the tournament.”

Ben sadly lost 2 and 1 in singles quarters today but did so well all week ...

Interestingly on TA website it say's today that LOCAL HOPE Sean Berman is into the semis.

The local hope who was born in " Sth Africa," trained in " NZ " and is still currently under " USA " on the ITF website. ??

can any one explain this ??

Tenys4r
02-01-2010, 10:22 PM
Yeah is a shame he lost - i was hoping he would get through to the final. At one stage thought it might be Kubler/Mitchell final but was not to be.

There is a lot of discussion about Berman in another thread. Unbelievable really the way TA jump on the bandwagon. How can he be local yet? Imagine if he had actually WON and not lost. I read most of his training was in USA- they must be rightly pissed that we are taking the credit for him. What a joke.

Ben is playing a Grade 1 Juniors tournament in Thailand this week with a couple of the other Aussie Juniors (Wagland, Duckworth and Whittington). He won his first round match easily. These highly graded Asian tournaments can be an easy way to get some good junior ranking points as we saw with Kubler last year and Berta used a couple of them as a springboard to his good junior season last year.

To answer Hewitt2010's question in the Jason Kubler thread, Ben Mitchell's ranking will move to about 870 in the world, the semifinal appearance in Ipswich gave him 8 points on top of his already accumulated 7 points but because he made quarters in Ipswich last year 3 points will be taken off the 8 he gained and he will have a total of 12 points. This week in Bundaberg Ben also has 1 point to defend which I would pressume he would be able to get.

It's funny how Ben Mitchell makes the semifinals and already had ranking points yet Jason makes the final and gets a higher ranking than him. :haha:

Good Luck in Bundaberg Ben, we all want another banana party in this thread.

:haha: that is really funny. I think Ben has a really good chance in the final tommorow and I really hope he can win so that we can have another top ten junior. If Ben wins he will go number 2 and Jason Kubler will stay number 1 as well as James Duckworth staying inside the top 10 as well. Ben may even be a really good chance to finish the year number 1 if he wins Wimbledon. If he wins Wimbledon and has a good showing at the US Open I can't see anyone catching him because he has no points to defend this year at all.

Lost the final 64 64 but it was pretty close. Up a break in the first, and was broken for the match in the second. Great tournament for him though, coming through qualifying and getting so many good wins along the way.

I heard Newcombe saying that the Australians from the boys tournament were going to play some Futures events in the UK, but in his interview Ben said he's spending the next 5 weeks playing on the clay, whether it's training or playing events I'm not sure, but also said he'd probably play US Open boys.

It is likely that this week he will train at the Tennis Australia base in Spain and on the week of the 12th of July he is entered in a Spanish future where he is the first alternate so he should get into that one directly. The week after he is no where near direct entry in the following weeks spanish future. After this result it probably would have been better to play the UK futures on Grass but doesn't matter, he will learn more in Spain.

I'd say it is very likely he will play the US Open boys tournament, he has a ranking high enough now to get direct entry so I can't see any harm in not playing. Hopefully Benny does well in some more futures later this year and can get around that top 600 mark. He should get some wc's next as well, probably qualifying Brisbane and qualifying Aus Open are givens for him now.

He uses agressive and flat down the line backhand, cross court backhand with good angles but it's inconsistent wing, without slice.

Ben get's an awesome draw at Burnie, first round vs Ivo Klec, which he should be able to win routinely, then followed up by either Rosol or Chvojka, which again I would imagine he'd win if he stays on form. After that would probably be Tomic, which will be a match to watch.

Great effort from Benny to get the win today, Chvojka up next will be tough but if Benny can get over the line he'll move very close to the top 500 and really set himself up for the year. Seedings at most futures and perhaps even direct entry into some challengers if Ben can keep winning here. I hope for Australian tennis' sake that both Ben and Bernard do well this week and next week.

Ben will be satisfied with his performance but he will also be disappointed as this match was his for the taking in the third.

It will be interesting to see what he can accomplish this year. Making the Wimbledon Qualies cutoff will be a very hard task for him. He would need to be playing like a top 200 player if he was to be any chance of making it and although his recent performances have been encouraging, they have all been on Australian soil and as we all know it's a lot harder for the Aussie players to win matches overseas.

Great effort though, what are everyone's expectations for Benjamin this year? I hope he can make TOP 300 :hearts:

Well if you take an in depth look into his ranking, ranking breakdown and tournaments that he is likely to enter you can make some assumptions. It is fair to presume Ben will get entry into the Caloundra challenger next week via a wild card and depending on his draw if he can match his efforts of this week and make two consecutive quarterfinals he would move to 450 in the world, if not he will stay around 505 in the world.

The most important thing for Ben right now is consistency in his results, can't be making quarters of challengers then losing first round the week after whether it be a challenger or a future. He will then play Mildura future followed by Berri future. A ranking of 505 might not get him seeded so if he can get a result in Caloundra he might get seeded for Berri.

Just 10 points to defend between now and Wimbledon so that shouldn't really be an issue. My guess would be that Ben will stick to futures after Caloundra and if he can get a title or two he might get top 350 but even that wouldn't be enough. People don't realise that Ben will have to gain another 123 points on top of his current 57 to get into the qualifying range, that is a huge ask and I doubt he will. Luckily he made Wimbledon final last year in Juniors so perhaps they'll give him a QWC.

I personally think the USO qualifying is much more realistic but even then Ben will have to pick up at least 2 futures titles to even be close. With that said I think Ben will do well and probably make AOQ list for 2012.

I know people aren't going to like it but I am going to post Ben's potential ranking movement after RG because I feel the potential movement is significant enough.

Seeing as he is already in the second he will have already gained 4 points regardless of the rest of his results so here it is:

round 2 - 418
QF - 414
SF - 407
(this is where it gets interesting)
F - 394
W - 367

A potential move into the top 400 is massive and would mean given the correct scheduling he could start to gain direct acceptance into challengers. Not to get ahead of myself though because Benny would need to play really well to even just make the final this week. Does anyone know where/if he is playing next week?

Are the brits still really hard on WC's and make them results based? I remember on the womens that some missed out and people like Lucic got WCs so there might be a few spare. the fact that he's in england playing queens on grass is a good sign thou....

Mitchell is impressive in dealing with the No.6 seed, Denys Mochanov ranked 349, in straight sets, 62 64.
Ben's draw has opened up with the No. 1 seed replaced by LuckyLoser, but, should they both win their 2nd round encounters, may have an interesting encounter with fellow Queenslander Michael Look in the QF round.

RustyOz

Ben wins the cane toad battle, coming from a set down to beat Look 46 61 64, to advances to the semis.
Face No.3 seed now, Swede Michael Ryderstedt, currently ranked 302, but a better player than that with a high rank of 130, albeit 6 years ago.
If Ben wins that one he could take out the tournament, as only the No.8 seed is left on the other side of the draw.
Go win that damn thang...

Great result for Benny. He will now crack the top 400 next Monday. regardless of the final result. Runner up will move him to about 397 and a win will move him to around 383. I guess Duckworth's recent results on the European clay has inspired Benny, he wants that number 2 Aussie spot in the '92 boys back. He has got the number 2 Aussie spot back now but lets just hope that he can push through and win this final against the unseeded Spaniard.

I think this is good for Duckworth too because it will push him now to get a result either next week or the week after (whenever he returns) so he can overtake Benny again. These two pushing each other could very easily result in both playing challenger main draw within two or three months time. They are both just 50-60 points shy of the top 300 which will result in both playing challengers. With Bernard doing well in Wimbledon too it seems the '92 class of Aussies are going to give us a bright future.

Hopefully Kubler comes back soon and joins Duckworth/Mitchell on the challenger tour when/if they all make it. Although I have a feeling Kubler will quit tennis for good soon. Either way these last few weeks have been extremely positive for Aussie tennis and with the decline of Lleyton Hewitt it is desperately in need.

Jason played doubles in the Juniors in Roehampton and has received a WC into Wimbledon Juniors, so quitting may be on hold.

Benny is playing a 15k Taiwanese future next week where he will be seeded very highly. Hoping Benny goes relatively deep so he can take the number 2 Aussie '92 spot back from Duckworth.
