I'm surprised that Frank beat Sock. Frank is in great form, but so is Sock and he's considered a much more talented player than Frank.

The other results were expected.

The day was not a complete disappointment for French tennis fans as Mina took home the Boys’ 18s title. The muscular Parisian may never shake off comparisons to Gael Monfils, but he distinguished himself in two ways by defeating Belgian Arthur De Greef, 6-4, 6-4.

The 17-year-old’s forehand volley winner on match point helped him win one of the few junior titles Monfils never claimed, having lost in the 2002 Boys’ 16s and 2003 Boys’ 18s finals. Afterwards, Mina said that it’s Rafael Nadal whom he admires most on the ATP World Tour.

While Monfils often employs a post-match victory dance, Mina celebrated Sunday in a style more suitable to the Spaniard: flexing his biceps and yelling “Vamos”.

Though Mladenovic and Dabrowski struggled on serve, Mina and De Greef traded eight straight holds to open their final. Mina saved a break point at 1-1 with a service winner before De Greef erased one in the following game with an ace.

De Greef dodged another break opportunity at 3-3 by serving and volleying, placing a backhand volley down-the-line that a stretching Mina could not retrieve.

But the Belgian had little chance of preventing Mina from breaking him at 4-4, as the Frenchman played four intimidating points in a row.

Trailing 15-Love, Mina brushed aside a down-the-line backhand return winner. On the next point, De Greef spun a second serve into Mina’s body, but the Frenchman ran around the ball in time for a difficult inside-out backhand winner.

Again, at 15-30, De Greef served to Mina’s backhand and paid as the Frenchman returned the ball deep to draw an error. At 15-40, De Greef found Mina’s forehand on an approach, but helplessly watched as the French Open finalist struck a down-the-line passing shot winner for the first break of the match.

“I knew when he didn’t make first serves that I had to be more aggressive,” said Mina.

De Greef noticed.

“He returned very well,” said the Belgian, who is Mina’s best friend and doubles partner. “I was serving not bad, but he took his chances and played very good.”

From 4-4, Mina won six consecutive games. But in the fifth game of the second set, his effort to obtain a fourth straight break nearly cost him dearly. Leading 6-4, 4-0, Mina could not convert on five break point chances, though he thrilled the Court 1 crowd by sliding twice for forehands in much the same manner of Monfils.

De Greef held and fought his way back to 4-5.

“I was so tired, because I lost the game at 4-0 when I ran a lot,” said Mina. “But I think he was tired too.”

With a championship point at 5-4, 40-30, Mina unleashed a mammoth serve down the tee.

But De Greef anticipated well and lunged early enough to just get his forehand return over the net. Mina rushed forward and improvised a forehand squash shot, forcing De Greef into hitting an all-or-nothing backhand pass.

Mina stuck his ground and put away a forehand volley winner to win the first ITF Junior Circuit Grade A title of his career.

“It was my best match of the tournament,” said Mina. “Now, I have to win a Grand Slam.”
