I do not see him on Johannesburg's site (only Gael and Ferrer are there now) - he will not protect his title?
I think it will be wise, flights to and from Johannesburg - I find it really unnecessary.
Second - he don't need play every week like he did 2009.

So no South Africa for the moment ???

He seemed really sad by his results at the end of this season. I hope he can rebound fast and high. Going in London with the alternate position was a poor decision from that POV.

I did notice that the SA Tennis Open have for a while been promoting Monfils and Ferrer as the top seeds on TV adverts, so Jo won't be defending his title in South Africa. Pity, as I'm still procrastinating about visiting South Africa for the first time and he's the perfect reason to do so.

no, it's not a challenger tournament! it's like the Masters in London, but with only the 8 best french players. real name is Masters France, it's only the 2nd year this is happening in France. it's great for us to be able to see our best tennis player, but it's during the off season (17/20 december), so i'm not sure it's that great for players...

on second thought i have to correct myself : it's not really the 8 best french players, it's the ones who did the best in french tournament during the past year

Exactly, and to be more precise, all the results in the ATP French tournaments (Metz, Lyon, Bercy, Marseille, I think I'm forgetting one ?) are comptabilised except Roland. Which is so  but again everything is about this competition. It's one year old, last year Simon had won it but neither Jo nor Monfils nor Gasquet had participated.

This year, Jo being french number 1 should have played it but he retired, same as Simon and Monfils, and Gasquet wasn't qualified because he only played 1 french tourney. So it's played between Chardy, Llodra, Benneteau, Mathieu, Ascione, Guez, Gicquel and Clément.

Tsonga Signs With Babolat for 2010

December 19, 2009

It was announced today that Frenchman and current world No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has signed a new racket deal with French manufacturer Babolat.

Tsonga, who was previously signed to Wilson rackets, will debut his Babolat frame at next month’s Australian Open.

Tsonga’s career highlights have included reaching the finals in Australia (2008) and winning the Paris Masters 1000 event in 2008.

More soon…

http://tennisconnected.com/home/2009/12/19/tsonga-signs-with-babolat-for-2010/ (Tsonga signs with Baoblat for 2010)

I'd love it if one of you could look for more info in the French newspapers/websites.

Really nothing to translate, apart from this : Jo will play with a Babolat next year :)

OK from the commentary in welovetennis, it's an old thing. He tested the APD model at the beginning of 2009 and found it very good, so he changed for the Kobra of wilson which wasn't as good, but the nearest one. So he waited for the end of his contract with Wilson and here is Babolat. So it isn't (only) a money thing, more like a regularisation.

MacArthur
12-20-2009, 05:57 PM
It's hard to say. This is the racquet he had in mind after his first change this year a little before RG. So we should have faith in him in that regard. I think he's good to go.

This is a very important year for Jo. He is nearly 25 years old, the best age in tennis. He has to perform strong this coming year. Be it with this racquet or another. He lacked very few things in 2009 to contend with the big guys, he can do it in 2010.

In L'Equipe today:
PETITE ALERTE POUR TSONGA. -
His back was hurting a little and he stopped his preparation on Thursday and resumed the training briefly on Monday. Wino prefers him to now spend a few days at home for Christmas and rest, but it's just as a precaution, Wino says they're still pretty much on schedule. He will then leave for Abu Dhabi for the exho.

Not really good news  :

He won't be in Abu Dabi and Doha. He just wasn't prepared enough. He confirmed his presence at Kooyong though (and not Sydney like his official site is saying). ;)

No, don't worry, he really doesn't sound worried, here's the full article:
« Nouvelles ambitions, nouvelle raquette »
JULIEN REBOULLET
They had a very tight schedule for the off-season after having almost wasted one week again with London. Then he's fallen a bit behind with his preparation when he took 4 days off for his back, but he's fine, he sounds eager to practice properly and have a real break from the tour.

DanaKz

I see that a lot of English articles say he's injured, but here's what Wino says in Le Parisien today, it's pretty much the same as in L'Equipe the other day, he's not ready yet and he needs one more week of training:

Does anyone understands anything about this Kooyong exho? Does he play tonight? Who does he play if so?

Apparently Del Portro withdrawn, but l'Equipe says he plays the final against Verdasco on Friday, and the Kooyong site says he plays against Haas? That makes no sense since Haas lost both his matches and Jo won. Maybe he wanted to play 3 matches so they made him play Haas today (friday in OZ), and then play Verdasco the next day?

but it seems he just plays Verdasco on friday  they also have a Cash/Leconte exhib after that.

Yeah but Haas lost both his matches, surely even if he wins against Jo he won't go to the final? That would be absurd. I know this is an exho but there is probably a lot of money at stake with all the top players that were supposed to play there and still are.

Friday - 11 am start

Fernando Gonzalez vs Ivan Ljubicic (5th/6th place match)
fb
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs Tommy Haas (bonus match)
fb
Sergiy Stakhovsky vs Sam Querrey (bonus match)

And :

Del Potro plays it safe and withdraws from AAMI Classic

US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from tomorrow's AAMI Classic semi-final, the second injury casualty.

Del Potro cited an elbow injury as the reason for not wanting to play Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Promoter Colin Stubs is trying to arrange a replacement opponent for Tsonga, who will now go through to Saturday's final against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Sorry, but I like that draw very much. I don't see Tipsarevic past Haas, so no problem for me. Dent can be tricky, but all in all, that's two first rouds that seems to be doable for Jo.

Stakhovsky can be a tricky first-round opponent, produces some sublime volleys. No room for complacency.
Dent potential second round - Jo has to be careful against those huge servers, he's been bitten in the past
Tipsarevic third round - Jo can overpower and outsmart him. Haas? Hope today's result is representative of his form
Soderling - more of the same, I hope
Djokovic - save for Jo's first AO final when he was inexperienced, Jo has got an impressive record against Djokovic. Hope these two battle it out in the quarters, with Jo the winner :)
Don't want to think further, for Federer lurks in the semis. Maybe Davydenko can do us a favour?

Honestly, barring any lingering discomfort from his recent injury, I think Jo's draw is very do-able. I have faith, I have tons of hope. Let's do it Jo!

I am satisfied with this draw. It could be a lot more difficult. But I do hope that he doesn't see Stakhovsky as an easy 1st round draw. The Ukranian will have nothing to lose or prove against Jo and he will give it all.

He's playing well in Kooyong but his break point conversion really worries me... Here against Verdasco he has had 6 breakpoints (I think?) so far in 3 different games and has not converted one. He had 3 in a row at 4-4 0-40 to serve for the set, all second serves from Verdasco, and he hit an ugly UE every time...

simplet
01-16-2010, 05:16 AM
And of course he throws in a disgusting service game at 5-6 and loses the set on the second break point against him...

greenhopper
01-16-2010, 05:30 AM
He's just picking up from where he left off. Missing opportunities, breaking down under pressure, running around backhands, over-hitting, talking to himself, etc.

I'll be happy if he gets past Tipsarevic.

PS: Happy new year, everyone!

Very up and down match. Felt like he was struggling to find his range in the first couple of sets. But, 3rd set was pretty good. There was a great down the line backhand passer, a fun net point that got many replays, a couple of awesome volley winners and the highlight, a terrific backhand slice winner. He served much better too by then.

Match stats.

I'm worried about Taylor Dent though. He serves big. They have very similar games. And never having played a 5 set match can come to bite him. But Jo's a lot healthier and fitter than Taylor. Hoping he remains calm and works his way through.

No, just no, guys.
Dent is a very good and complete player, but not a tall server like Isner, Karlo or the gooch (he is 1m87). I don't see why Jo should have any particuliar problem with his serve. At least not more than against Djokovic, la monf, Haas or stepanek, all of them have excellent serves too and Jo has beaten them by the past.
The key point will be the passing shots of course, which wasn't that great during his first match.
He said he was heating up for the second week. I don't expect a great match, but I think he will win, whatever the number of sets needed.

Good luck Jo !

I hope this holds true; I'm a little nervy about the match because of the Dent serve, and because of the fact he's not the type of player you get to face every day. Jo should win it of course, but there's just that little bit of worry lurking heh.

Hey, I like the way you think :D. It's true, Jo particularly had trouble with giants' serve. It's just that Dent serves really fast. But he comes to the net all the time. so he is passable. this blake-del potro match is killing me by te way.

Again, not perfect translation but here goes (corrections are welcome):

Balancing the books of Tsonga

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga passed the first round without a hitch at Melbourne on Tuesday, against the Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky (6-3, 6-4, 6-4). Taylor Dent awaits him in his next match.
--------------

“You have to win 21 sets in order to reach the end of a Grand Slam.” Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can subtract three of those after his victory (6-3, 6-4, 6-4) against Sergiy Stakhovsky. “It was a good match, I was solid,” the French number 1 noted after his first official match of 2010. “It wasn’t great tennis, but it wasn’t bad either. The important thing is to win in this kind of competition.”

In good accounting, the Australian Open 2008 finalist can put in the credit column: his physical condition with good coverage of the court, an effective serve with 15 aces and 65% first serve percentage and a three-set victory to keep fresh. In the debit column, he notes that he strayed a bit by conceding two breaks in the first two sets and made some foolish errors by letting down his guard at the beginning of the second set (0-3).

“There were times where I was a bit careless with my footwork, the intensity and purpose. I allowed myself to be broken stupidly in the second set by messing about. Today, I didn’t pay the consequences, but against a better player, it will become more complicated. I hope that next time, I will be better.”

With experience, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has learned the long-term aspect of his trade. A Grand Slam is long and tiring. One must know how to conserve energy and take care of each detail. Against Gulbis in official match conditions, he didn’t lose sight of his goals. (Appreciate correct translation of: Il a beau prendre « des doudounes à l'entraînement » et repartir presque à vélo contre Gulbis) Before an Australian crowd conquered by the Frenchman since his run in 2008, he endeavoured to keep the flame alive. His essence, his enthusiasm and desire.

By skipping tournaments at the beginning of the season, he arrived raring to go. “I feel well, fresh, I really want to play. When you play a few weeks before, you’ve played so much that you’re sick of it. When you arrive at a Grand Slam with the aim of going all the way, you must win 21 sets. I don’t know if the world realises that, but it’s a lot (laughter).” To calculate the points, he can count on his next opponent, Taylor Dent. Against this serve-volleyer, the Frenchman faces a good test and he knows it: “He is dangerous for he moves forward all the time. I have to be mentally solid. It’s true that I prefer to dictate play, but whether it’s Taylor Dent or another opponent, I must win.”

In a statement of account, one always looks at the last line.

Nice patient play today. Dent didn't do too much to trouble him; kept serving to Jo's forehand and even threw in a few doubles. Jo went for aggressive returns, served well & hit plenty of passing shots. Played a little tentative to get broken from 3-1 in the 3rd set, hadn't even gone to deuce on serve till that game but steadied himself to break right back. Pain free win, over all.

And he came out on top

Almagro gave us quite a scare. Really upped his game from the 3rd set. I'm happy that Jo never gave up and found a way to prevail.

The quarter-final match against Djokovic will be a big test for Jo. It's all about self-belief and motivation. Rest up and all the best of luck.

In his press conf video : http://video.eurosport.fr/tennis/open-d-australie/2010/tsonga-c%27etait-un-reve_vid124864/video.shtml

He says Almagro didnt have anything on his wrist, because "I don't know anyone who with a wrist injury can hit shots like he did. I saw him making his cinema at the beginning of the match, but as it went on and he was hitting harder and harder, he wasn't looking at his wrist. I didn't even know he was supposed to be injured. It was bullshit." He's not wrong

Unfortunately not :(

Sadly Soderling had a crap start to last year too so has quite a bit of leeway till his big FO triumph. I'd really like to see Jo get back into the top 8 since it could make all the difference in the HC masters at the start of the year. Bar getting to the final though I don't think it is doable :(

Not particularly good, but he started off better and was actually domaintaing the rallies in the beginning and Jo made a few too many mistakes to get broken. Two DF gave an oppruntity ot do somehting on return and rebroke

I loved the Courier interview  so cute, he begins babbling in english and then he goes, crap what is that word in english ?

glad he's in the semis but what a strange match that was. did novak all of a sudden get sick?

Keijan
01-27-2010, 01:56 PM
It probably was a stomach virus or something, Gaël had that kind of things once too, in a match against Rafa in Rotterdam I think.

I'm so angry that people are calling Jo's dance a disrespect for Novak, and saying he has no class. He recognised Nole was feeling unwell when he came back, and he even asked the crowd for a round of applause for him, for having fought through the sickness. I don't know what more they need.

This is terrible, the worst match he played since his juniors days. I think I'm about to cry.

Fed played great, did what he does to lots of players and made Jo look ordinary. I wouldn't overreact and say Jo's play was that bad (though he was obviously somewhat drained).

It's still a great tourny, and as long as Jo takes the positives out of it he should have a fantastic year :)
