Yeah that's what I thought! It's quite optimistic. New year, new Richie. Man I hope he plays Sydney. I mean, I'm going to Melbourne... but it's so much easier in Sydney!

I was just thinking about how we said exactly the same at the end of last year ("new year, new Richie") Let's just hope this time it's true;)

Yeah I thought last year was bad... He wasn't playing well at all last year but that was nothing compared to this year lol. It's annoying for me because i only started properly supporting him ath the beginning of 2008 where his downward slope began, so really hoping for a good, non suspended 2010 :D ALLEZ !

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/tennis/3107845/Gasquet-set-to-lock-lips-with-Auckland

looks like he will be going to Auckland. Ignore the incredibly distasteful headline btw, I've just posted the article so there was a source. Looks like he has Sydney as his first pick but he is going to miss the cut into the main draw.

Davodus
11-29-2009, 05:26 PM
I would rather he didn't play that week at all, but I guess an early Brisbane loss wouldn't be the best preparation. And that title is indeed distasteful, but I like the attitude of the tournament director.

Cloudygirl
11-29-2009, 05:30 PM
He'll have to play, he is defending an absolute shed load of points 270 points up to and including the Aussie open. He had Sydney semi's last year so 90 points so he needs to play bigtime.

Auckland could be good for him, draw won't be that great as most people will play Sydney so it could be confidence boosting if he does a few rounds.

Davodus
11-29-2009, 05:33 PM
Yeah, but going to Auckland then back into Australia would have to be kind of annoying, since you have to go through our customs again

It is important for him to defend the points, that's true, but I dunno, sometimes playing both weeks hinders your performance at the AO. That said, we should just hope, for now, that he actually has the option :o

Cloudygirl
11-29-2009, 05:37 PM
Yes, I hope so too. Still nothing on their website about releasing a decision and it should be done around 7th Dec if they haven't applied to delay it.

I think his choice of tournaments actually shows he still thinks he stands a chance in the slams. If he didn't he could just play Chennai because the draw there is really really weak.

Lemon Custard
11-29-2009, 11:28 PM

Dang! It's so much easier to travel to NZ and back if you're Australian. I had to beg the nice lady to give me a stamp on my passport in Christchurch.

I'll just be happy if he can play, but I wish he was playing Sydney!!!! BAH!!! :bigcry:

Sidenote, ya.. let me be the 37th person to say that headline is a disaster. Journalistic standards in NZ hey. Gross.

Cloudygirl
11-29-2009, 11:29 PM
Well he might still play Sydney. It's his first choice but I expect the draw is going to be filled with top players there and there aren't likely to be many withdrawals at the start of the season.

Lemon Custard
11-29-2009, 11:37 PM
Yeah.. he always does so well here, it'd be a shame if he didn't make the cut. Plus, stalking him is way easier when he's in the country.

Cloudygirl
11-29-2009, 11:42 PM
Yeah that is so true. I'm planning to do some UK Richard stalking later in the year if he heads my way lol. I'm a bit worried because I read that Auckland's surface isn't as similar to the AO as Sydney so it's not as good preparation.

Lemon Custard
11-29-2009, 11:57 PM
Yeah I agree, I mean, any court time is beneficial, but I read the words, "the No1 court will be resurfaced with Plexicushion for the 2011 event" and thought, well that's not bloody helpful is it? I just have to hope there are some withdrawals... or injuries at Brisbane. I feel horrible for saying that!!

Cloudygirl
11-29-2009, 11:59 PM
He's ok for Brisbane he's made the main draw for that one. It just looks from that article like he isn't going to make Sydney.

He so needs the points too.
He's not on much for the year at all and he has semis to defend at Brisbane and Sydney and a 3rd round AO.

Lemon Custard
11-30-2009, 12:07 AM
That's what I mean, Brisbane is before Sydney.. so I'm hoping for some injuries there so they withdraw from Sydney. And I still feel horrible for it. Oh well, I'm biased!

Yea, I don't care where he palys as long as he can play. No matter where he plays he'll have to climb back up th ernakings.

And yes, I hope he is training but this must be particularly hard time because he can't really even seriously be working with his next "permanent" coach until all this is settled. This should be the time players are working on major improvements to their game and he can't even finalized any coaching arrangements.

Cloudygirl

there is nowhere else they can appeal. They have to accept it as a final arbitration.

The award, notified by the CAS Court Office, shall be final and binding upon the
parties. It may not be challenged by way of an action for setting aside to the extent that
the parties have no domicile, habitual residence, or business establishment in
Switzerland and that they have expressly excluded all setting aside proceedings in the
arbitration agreement or in an agreement entered into subsequently, in particular at the
outset of the arbitration.

What else can they do, they cant refuse him wild cards now he has no hearings pending and tournament draws are random. I can't see they can do anything else.

Lemon Custard
12-18-2009, 11:22 PM
Yeah. I dunno - you saw some of the draws Richie has come up with recently... I just think they have more influence than they'd have us believe.

That said, I find it ridiculous they appealed in the first place, I mean, as repeatedly mentioned throughout the report (yeah.. I sat there and read it too ahha) the amount of the drug in his system could have had no effect whatsoever - so it didn't do ANYTHING. How can it be considered doping in the first place if there was no way of knowing it was in his system. They've treated him like a regular user. There are some serious issues in the system!

Cloudygirl
12-18-2009, 11:29 PM
I understand why they appealed. The first tribunal were quite lax with their application of the relevent rule in relation to the length of the ban. hey have to try to uphold their rules. This tribunal by finding that there was no fault, have got round that. Thank goodness! I can understand why they have to protect the rules but it is very cruel on the individual caught in the middle like Richard

He must be so relieved.

it would be very very strange : going to Buenos-Aires with the jetlag, play on clay ... and then go back to Dubai, would be nonsense.

Sometimes players who want to make money make a little bit strange choices, but it's not Gasquet's case :

last year, nearly all of the good players who players Buenos-Aires also played Acapulco

well I think at best he'd get selected in doubs and why should he have to thnk about dc. Let Tsonga, Monfils and simon have a go.

Richard is going back to basics I think. He used to be most comfortable on clay, maybe he is trying to find himself and have a good go at Roland Garros.

From what I read Monfils is also committed in Acapulco.

And anyway, I think now Gasquet can feel free about Davis Cup for his scheduling : 3 other French players have been in the top-20 for more than one year and clearly have the edge over him.

And another French player has always been selected in doubles.

Cloudygirl
12-21-2009, 07:33 PM
He is the 7th ranked french player at the moment isn't he.

Tsonga, Monfils, SImon, chardy, Benneteau and PHM are all ranked above him I think and as already said Llodra is a lock for the doubles. Even if a couple of the others are injured, he is unlikely to be picked so it shouldn't even enter into his mind.

WOW - This is a NEW RIchie.

When's the last time he played clay in SOuth America? (has he EVER?, in challengers?). Maybe Richie has been dreaming of MOnte Carlo, was it 2005 against Fed?

Yeah, I'm guessing he's pretty much written off DC this year which is probably a good thing, let the others carry the load, unless of course FRance is in the finals and then I know Richie would want to be a part of that. I know there are differing opinions about DC but he does seem to enjoy being part of the Team (excpet of course the U.S, disaster) and if he does enjoy it I hope he can become part of it again and if not well he has a good "out".

Yh it will probaly be Acapulco after Buenos Aires.

Before Buenos Aires is Rotterdam (Indoor Hard) & Costa do Sauipe (Clay) which both start on 08-02-2010. Richie did play Rotterdam last year but I don't see him travelling from Europe to South America so maybe he could play Costa do Sauipe.

So maybe 3 Clay Tournaments in a row for Richie.

08-02-2010: Costa do Sauipe, Brazil
14-02-2010: Buenos Aires, Argentina
21-02-2010: Acapulco, Mexico

It''s a smart move anyway. His ranking has dropped so he won't automatically qualify for MS tournaments (which means he doesn't have to use them as part of his best of 18). He can use smaller events with weaker draws to boost his ranking until he is in a decent position again. For example he is defending semis in dubai but the draw for the clay 500 that week is generally weaker.

He clearly has a plan which is a big step forward too. I feel excited for him.

He played mainly clay court challengers in 03 I think (I wasn't a fan back then) and I'm sure he played the south american tournies in 04, so maybe he really is going back to basics.

He can use smaller events with weaker draws to boost his ranking until he is in a decent position again. For example he is defending semis in dubai but the draw for the clay 500 that week is generally weaker.

He clearly has a plan which is a big step forward too. I feel excited for him.

Yh totally agree, he's defending 180 Points in Dubai which it looks like he's not gonna go to as he's most likely going to Acapulco which is probaly not gonna be as strong as Dubai, both are ATP 500.

well the only downside for him is I wouldn't be surprised if both Ferrer and Nalby play acapulco and they are his kryptonite. Mind you if he could beat them it would be incredibly confidence building.

I don't think that he played that week last year. If he really is doing the clay court swing maybe he'd do Santiago.

we only know it as it comes out, by seeing the draws of the tournaments he's entered. He hasn't announced it on his website or anything.

Does he have a facebook page with any info these days like Rafa does?

Anyway so far it is
Brisbane
Sydney

then possibly the South American clay court swing.

Yh, Nalbandian is playing and Gonzalez, Monfils and Almagro.

I think Ferrer will be in Dubai.

Ferrer plays in Buenos-Aires then I guess he will be in Acapulco, not in Dubai. Yes he's "defending finalist" in Dubai, but he has more chance on clay in Acapulco, and he plays Davis Cup on clay next week.

The advantage of not being top-30 for Gasquet is not so much that he will not take part in MS1000 tournaments : actually he will be allowed to take part in Indian Wells and Miami, and if he improves his ranking a little bit, he might also take part in Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid and the others ... (not certain that he improves as he has many points to "defend" in the beginning of the year but he might do it ... and anyway he has a good chance to get a WC in Monte-Carlo).

The advantage of that ranking is that he can earn points in more than 2 ATP250 tournaments, rather than concentrate too much on ATP500 tournaments.

I don't think Gasquet has completely written off Davis Cup : it's just that he has no obligation to focus too much on that to make his schedule like in the past ... but if he plays well, he can surely play it again.

What do y'all reckon the chances of him playing DC in March are? I guess a lot depends on his showing in Australian series, and if he's off to South America and starting clay - dunno???? And anyway, I think now Gasquet can feel free about Davis Cup for his scheduling : 3 other French players have been in the top-20 for more than one year and clearly have the edge over him.
:topic: we'll see after the AO. Besides, these three belong to the most injury-prone players on the tour. But it is perfectly fine for me, if they do their job against Germany.

well it'll certainly keep him fit. Acapulco is a 500 so I can't see him missing that.

How does the ranking work for players that were top 30 so subject to their best of 18 rules but then drop out?

Do his current 0 pointers in the 1000s stay compulsaries (for his 18 countable tournaments) until their drop date or can he swap them for 250 and 500s because his ranking is low?

If he can swap them then I can see the point of going to south america with weaker draws and building up his ranking so that he gets a better draw for the slams (he could be seeded by Roland or Wimby) but if not whats the point bar lots of practice? I get the basic rankings system but i don't get all the technicalities.

I don't think this decision of playing a full southamerican clay season is so much because of rankings : they probably think it's good for his game

As for the rankings, it's not really about the 1000s (if he improves his ranking a little bit, he will get a direct entry there and then he will be compelled to play there anyway ; if not, yes he will be able to count more ATP250s),

but it's true that there's a change about the ATP500 as he's not in the list of top-30 players in the end of the year then he will be able to count more than 2 ATP250 (actually he has 3 of them as he was not in the direct entry-list for Bercy) : especially he should be able to replace his 20 points from Barcelona and 45 points from Tokyo as soon as he gets better results.

Cloudygirl
12-23-2009, 12:10 AM
He could def do with getting rid of Barcelona and Tokyo asap.

So the basics are that he must play the 1000s if he qualifies for them and they go in his best 18 but with the 500s he is not obligated to play 4 this year and so if he doesn't can replace those with 250s.

I think playing a lot of matches on clay can only help his game. On faster surfaces, Richard likes to play points quickly, but on clay it will force him to rally more and that can only help his forehand. Last few years he really struggled on clay: missed most of 2006, was nothing special in 2007, total disaster in 2008 and missed 2009 (although he played very well in Rome). He needs matches on clay.

Puschkin

Certainly and it is also true that his best clay season was 2005 when he burst on the scene. But Santiago? It starts in the week directly after the AO.

What sense would it make to go to South America and not playing Acapulco, which is a 500? However, that would be four weeks in South America on a string, even if he omits the Brazilian tourney! That looks a bit over-ambitous to me. He can of course still skip one or the other, depending on his results, but it remains a heavy schedule. I really wonder about his thinking about 2010? Did he change his prep work? What is he focusing on? Is there a different approach? The only thing he said is that he wants to get back to the Top 20, later Top 10 and that RG is very important. And those stupid journalists don't go into detail but keep questioning his past season which we know only too well. :o

Maybe he is preparing such a heavy schedule thinking he may get knocked out early and he just wants to have lots of tournaments lined up. I don't know, he is always a puzzle to us  Could this be Deblicker's advice? It's the sort of heavy schedule I would have expected from Peyre.

Remember, he is going unseeded to AO. No matter how he can prepare, he can always face someone like top 5 in first two rounds..and given his luck, it certainly is a good possibility. I think if you are number 52 in the world, you don't think about scheduling your tourneys around big events, but rather try to sneak in deep in any event and certainly Santiago could be the one. All the 500 events and higher and filled with top players.

Both he and Tomas were hitting really well, and they played a practice set which was amazing tennis. I was having the best time watching it, both playing and hitting so well. The idiot doesn't want to get sunburned though before the tournament. Was he really bad? I've said before here I burn very badly and it makes me really sluggish. Better not do the same to him and in hot climates I actually wish he would wear the hat.

From your vids he looks to be hitting his forehand slightly differently or maybe it's that long since I've seen him hit a decent one.

Did he look happy? Also how did he play against Chardy, and does he have any stencilled rackets at all?

(not that I'm asking many questions) Glad you had an amazing time!!

I didn't see too much of his practice with Chardy so I can't really comment. But like I said, I was very happy with how he hit against Tomas. He was only sunburnt on his arms, so it wasn't too bad. I am now really badly burnt, but I feel okay, since I'm used to being in the sun a lot, so I assume he is fine. Especially since it was just his arms. He had no racquets with the head sign that I saw, but I dunno if that means anything or not. I guess we will wait and see what he uses in his match.

And yes he seemed really happy. He was really nice to me and my sister when we got a photo, and he looked generally quite relaxed.

I was just wondering re Chardy what his endurance was like over 3 hours in hot weather. If he was ok then I'm guessing he has put in some gym time which can only be a good thing.

Re the sun yeah guess he should be used to it. He should still be very careful though. Skin cancer is not good. He needs decent sunscreen. Although I actually imagine that it must be pretty hard to get, even the ones for sport are crap and tend to come off everywhere and I guess you don't want to be greasy where you have to hold a racket. I'm such a mother when it comes to sun protection. Whack some aloe vera on your sunburn if it does get sore, the stuff is like a miracle ;)

When's the draw out? knowing his luck he will prob draw Roddick. But hey 2010 hopefully his luck has changed and he will get an amazing draw.

01-02-2010, 05:57 AM
Not a bad draw... first couple rounds are really important to win and then against Roddick who is number 1 seed he should try play with no pressure. Even Roddick must be very beatable now since he did not play in many months and Richard is the one with more match play as of late.

Allez!

Anyone got a stream? 1.30 am for me. I love Australia.

But obviously there is a delay with Sunday's OOP. Chardy has not even started! And was supposed to do so 3 hours ago!

12.30 am for me so could be worse, provided it's not raining. Worst case scenario and we can't get a stream if you go on the Brisbane international website, there is live radio commentary. They had that for quallies so I'm sure it will be on tonight.

T, do you know if Eurosport are just covering womens or if it's men aswell?

Cloudygirl
01-03-2010, 11:39 AM
Don't know. It looked a few days ago from reading it like it was mens brisbane as well, but it now looks like they are showing ATP Doha and WTA Brisbane.

ATP site says tennis channel on delay and to be confirmed who else is broadcasting it. Hopefully it will be on fromsport otherwise, I'm sure Aussie TV must have coverage.

There's a bet365 stream from midnight tonight UK time.

Been away for a while and just got home in time to see that if the order of play is still as on the website. I could actually see Richard at a perfect time BUT I don't see any live streams available in the US.

I'm gonna run to grocery store as NO food in my house since We've been gone and when I get back I hope to find a live stream. He's on Rafer arena so IF we in the US could get a stream we'd be able to see him "fur suure". If anyone finds a stream that is not Bet365, please let us poor people in the US know.

She's pretty well loved, I'd say you just got a skewed sample... ;) I like her much more since she got together with Lleyton. Before that she was known for a relationship with her costar on Home and Away which was was entirely for publicity and had very little basis. I didn't always like her, but I do now because she's much more normal. She used to be all publicity and plastic and happy all. the. time. Just really fake, you know? Now she's sorta normal. Plus, i like Lleyton.. he's feisty.

Ohhh yay.. the news is over!! Here we go!!
