Pre-Match Press Conference: Novak Djokovic(SRB) 2009/10/04

Q: You've been off for three weeks. How did you prepare for Beijing?

A: This is my second time playing at this site and I had a lot of success, won a bronze medal, so I'm very excited to be back, obviously. I had a lot of time since the US Open. I've been with the team at the Davis Cup and since I haven't played a match, so I had around a week of holidays and rest, and then two hard weeks of training. I really prepared well for Beijing and Shanghai, and I can hope that the work will pay off.

Q: On your official Web site, it mentions a column about the Beijing weather. What do you think of the weather this year compared to 2008?

A: It's much better. In 2008, the weather was very difficult for all the athletes. It was humid and difficult for the athletes to play, but this year itís much nicer and easier to play in. This year it has changed absolutely.

Q: Why don't your two brothers come with you to Beijing? And do you have some suggestions for the junior players?

A: My two brothers have their own careers right now, so they have to pay attention more on their lives. They have dedicated more time to practice and obviously they want to become professional tennis players. Thatís why they can't travel with me as much. But every time they are with me, I enjoy being with them and they are great support, especially the youngest one. :)

I can suggest to any junior players to try to be professional and try to accept that tennis is their life and it is their job and it is what they do. Tennis is one of the rare sports that requires a lot of dedication, lots of traveling. The season is probably one of the longest in sports. Basically it's not easy but it's a very nice way of living. You get to see a lot of people and travel to a lot of different countries.

Q: What do you think is the most important quality in a tennis player?

A: It depends which tennis player. I don't know. It's obviously the work and dedication and professionalism. In any professional sport you have to dedicate a lot of your time. I think you have to be in it 100 percent.

Q: What are your ambitions for the China Open? And what are your plans and ambitions for the rest of the season?

A: Considering the good results I've had in the last two seasons in Asian tournaments, I can expect a good result here. I always go for the highest possible result and I'm confident right now. I'm looking to make more good results. I think I played a good tournament at the US Open and I'm physically and mentally prepared. I'm aware that there are four or five more good tournaments before the end of the season.

Q: A lot of players kind of mentally see the US Open as the end of the season, but you're not one of those, do you think you can take advantage of that?

A: The season is really long and I think the players feel it. I think that's one of the reasons why some players think that after the US Open there's only one or two more tournaments to go to. But after the US Open, there's still a lot more, one or two months to go. I just try to take one tournament at a time and perform my best and go from there.

Q: Your fans have named you 'Joker' because you are such a comedian, so I wonder who are you going to imitate this time on the court?

A: Well that's a question unfortunately I don't have an answer for. I don't plan to do anything that I do, it just comes spontaneously on the court. If it's the right moment and the people are really eager to see something, then maybe I'll show something. I like to have fun on and off the court, but, of course, everything has its own limits and borders. When I have to be professional on the court during a match, I am. But I like to have fun before and after the match and I like to bring some fun to the spectators.

Q: How is the experience working with Todd Martin? I know you said it's just part time, but players usually make changes.

need in our team in order to improve some elements in my game. In this level it's only about the details, I think, in the game and the mental state as well. He has experience and used to be a top five player, used to play the best players in the world and beat the best players in the world. To have him on the team would be great thing for me, a good step forward. But I'm not going to stop working with Marian Vajda. I'm going to work with Marian part time and Todd part time. Marian is a person that helped me a lot in my career and in my life. We have a special relationship and it's not just a coach player thing.

Novak plays tomorrow, second match on Centre Court

http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2009/747/op.pdf

Play starts at 11.00am Beijing time, so imagine should be about 13.00 in Beijing - that's 6.00am in UK and 7.00am everywhere else in Europe. Not sure about US though I assume sometime in the middle of the night. :o

Works out pretty well for me :bounce: as I normally get up at 5.30am for work anyway - so guess I can watch at least the 1st set (if there's a livestream) before I have to leave, and follow the end of the match on a scoreboard.

Ajde Nole :D

LOL! Think we all posted at the same time there

If there are livestreams available, I will surely watch the start of the match :) I normally get up between 5.30am and 6.00am anyway, and leave the house at 7.30am - so it doesn't make much difference to me  Unless he wins 6-0, 6-0 or something, I sure won't see all the match - but hopefully will catch the scoreboard for the end once I get to the office (can't watch livestreams from work  ) For me personally, it's probably the best time he could be scheduled as at least I'll get to see some of it.

You guys are always looking too much to the draw. The most important thing is that he plays well. If he does that, he should reach the final. If not, he can lose to lots of guys, especially in such a strong field.

I'm so pissed off about this draw. Nole and Nando to face each other again.

It's bad on both sides 'cause Nando is a dangerous matchup for Nole (he's the Top 4 player Nando does best against) and it's also unfortunate that Nando might lose just in the quarters because I so want him to qualify for London.

October 5th 2009 R1, Novak Djokovic d. Victor Hanescu 6-3, 7-5

Q: This is not your first time to lose grip of your racquet when serving. Why do you think you lost it?

A: I knew you would ask me that first question. Well, itís not the first time. I hope itís the last time, because itís not certainly comfortable in that this kind of thing has happened in such a big event. Unfortunately, I sweat a lot in the hand and sometimes it happens even though I donít want it to.

Q: Can you just tell me generally how you feel about the match? Are you happy about how you played today?

A: Yeah I was happy overall with how I played, itís just that I thought that I could finish the job earlier. I had two times break up in the second set and shouldnít lose that service game. You know, it was just a little bit frustrating the way I was losing points in the second set. I think I had chances every game in the match that I should win that game, but you know thatís the first round. You have to get used to the ups and downs a little bit, and hopefully in the next match Iíll be more consistent.

Q: Wanted to ask you if you could elaborate on what itís like to work with Todd Martin. I think a lot of us look back on his era with a lot of fondness so itís great to see someone working with him now.

A: Indeed. Todd has a lot of experience as a play and as a coach as well, and I just hope in our cooperation in the future he will be able to get that experience on me and be able to help me out in some elements of my game I think I can still improve on, as in serve, for example. He was an all around player at the highest level of tennis for many years, so he knows what its like to play in big matches, and itís certainly going to help me out. So, I look forward to working with him and my current coach Marian. I will work part time with both of them, and Iím really excited.

Q: Could you put todayís match in context of what you expect to face later on in the competition when things get tougher and are there any concerns there?

A: Well there are no secrets about later stages of the tournament. Everyone expects tougher opponents, and I am aware of that. And I am as well aware of the face that I need to raise the level of my performance in order to get further. So that is something I will work on. I have the day off tomorrow. I will try to get used to the weather and the time zone Ė the jet leg. As you can see in the second set I was a little bit sleepy, but hopefully I can play well in the next game.

Q: What would you like to say to Chinese tennis fans?

A: I would like to thank them for their great support theyíre giving to me and to all the famous players in general. Iíve said it before, Iíll say it again: things I have experienced with the Chinese fans in the last few years, especially at the Shanghai Masterís Cup, Iíve never experienced in my life. They are very appreciative to a player, and they respect the time you dedicate to them. For me, itís great. I just love it.

Q: Federer has already secured his year-end number one position right now, but the number two position is still open for you, Rafael, and Andy to fight for before the season is finished. So, in your mind, how importance you think your important in the Asian tournaments like in Beijing and Shanghai matters to you?

A: Well ranking wise, it matters a lot, obviously, but itís very important not to pay attention too much to the rankings because then you just lose your focus on something you have to do and your priority to play well on the court. I will just try to be patient and take one match one tournament at a time. I know the results will come if I play well. Iíve been playing at the highest level in tennis for the last three or four years, Iíve been at every major event, so I know what it feels like. Itís a matter of consistency, especially these days when you have Murray, Nadal, Federer, and Del Porto as your main opponents and rivals for the top spots in the world. They are playing so well and so consistent, and in order to keep up you have to do the same and even better.

Q: According to the organizing committee of China Open your name was on the list of a stage show today, but according to the newest list your name was taken off. Is that because you are no longer interested in off court and fashion.

A: I wasnít informed about that. If I knew about that maybe I would participate. I have not much experience in the fashion shows and not much on clothes as well.

Q: Last year when you won the championship, you were understandably upbeat and you talked about going to number one this year. When you look back at the time between the last time you were in China and your arrival this week, how do you look at what youíve achieved this year so far? Is it up to your expectations?

A: I always have very high expectations for most of the tournaments I play, because I was winning most of the surfaces in tournaments I played. I did consistently well at the Grand Slams, which is very important. Any Slam event is very important in order to stay in the menís game. I think that actually was missing at my results this year, good performance at the Grand Slam events. I was in the semifinals at the US Open and quarters at Wimbledon and Australia. Of course thatís a great result, but as I said, even though I played quite well throughout this year I dropped a place in the rankings. That proves how well the other players are doing. If I expected to do something bigger than I did this year then yes, probably, but I am not disappointed with the whole season so far. I had the best clay court season ever up to the French open. So I try to always look on the bright side, and I did make some changes this year on racquet at the start of the year and some other things that were maybe keeping my mind off court a little bit, but I am confident that I can play very well and be a candidate for a Grand Slam in coming years.

Hmmmmm....it's bad that the organizers wrote about a fashion show with Nole in it before Nole is informed about. Do they think Novak will definitely agree to it??? First, Nole may not want another fashion show. He may wanna concentrate more on the matches. Second, fans must feel disappointed that promises by the organizers are not fulfilled. I'd be :( if the organizers just put these big names in advertisements about the shows to generate more business.

I can't believe Roddick lost. No offense to Kubot but he really had no business winning this match. I guess it just proves that as much as the ATP top players are more consistent (like, 100 times more) than the WTA, they're not perfect, and that if even the top players play a complacent match, they might be in trouble. This is just such a shocking upset.
