OK, so everybody. I think it is a TRAVESTY that the US challenger tourneys do not have ANY SEMBLANCE of live scores. You have to like search everywhere, just to find out what the heck is going on. My friends from Europe - what do YOU think?!? (I am traveling in Europe alot of the time for work, and you can Always get live scores at just about every CH event.. But, I mean - come on. The "live score" at the tournament website is a joke. Thx bet365, how about court 2 - :-)
The USTA and where the heck are they? Local Organizers? Someone should easily be able to provide any equipment needed (like, it's logistics! All you have to do is: ...Relay the Scores!!!) to the tournament desk who does a live input. Unbelievable they can't figure it out for themselves.

Vince, dog. It is time to either make major decisions to get better, or hang it up. This situation as it is right now isn't working out for you anymore.

Nice result for McClune. Kendrick, you are way out the top 100 now so you better start getting used to playing challengers again, and hopefully winning a bit. And too bad for Yani he had to retire.

I think one of Levine, Ram (if he isn't tired), Devvarmen, Anderson and Sweeting will win here.

funny how these rumors get started. Sweeting is a great guy. Solid head and hard worker. Had an issue at Florida at age 18, but all out of proportion. Watch out for him going forward; his consistency and confidence is improving and he's got some great weapons. took Set off del po this year, lost to cilic 6, 5 and 6 - that's pretty close to putting it all together and i'm going to bet he will. 2010!!

Hey guys...I'll be at most of the matches for the rest of the week (although I have to work most of tomorrow), and will try to give updates when possible.

I called last year's winner after the first round, and will try to do the same this year. Based on all the matches that I saw in the 1st round, I think that Ryan Sweeting is the man to beat this year. I have seen Sweeting play on clay, slow hard, and fast hard, and I think that it is very safe to say that he prefers the faster surfaces (and the U of I indoor courts are lightning quick). He seems to be moving quite well, and is simply crushing the ball at the current moment. I watched Sweeting and Odesnik play a hard fought three setter last year, and Sweeting seems to be far fresher this week than he was coming into this tournament last year. Kevin Kim absolutely dominated Rajeev Ram on this surface last year, and I think that he is the only true roadblock for Sweeting (I know, I know, calling the #1 seed as the biggest roadblock isn't much of a prediction, but challengers are a completely different animal as most of you know). Kevin Anderson isn't quite as optimistic as we was entering the tournament a year ago, and unfortunately has had a lot of setbacks since winning this tournament at his alma mater last year.

The heartbreak of the day for the local fans had to be Ryler deHeart. Ryler played at the U of I and lives in Champaign, and had a lot of fans rooting for him. This was his first tournament in several months after a back injury, and hopefully he'll recover well in the offseason (he's a really nice guy). It'll be interesting to see how his conqueror does against another U of I guy, Rajeev Ram. For the 2nd straight year, tournament organizers gave a WC to U of I #1 player Dennis Nevolo, and for the 2nd straight year he got dusted pretty quickly. The odd thing is that Nevolo is really undersized and seems to prefer to grind, which is a horrible style of play for his own indoor "home courts."

Good luck to everyone's rooting interests for the rest of this week! :wavey:

There really isn't a centre court per se at this tournament. All of the courts are side by side, and have bleachers on both sides of the court. You can also watch from overhead on the courts as well. As long as there isn't a double default, at least one of your favourites will advance ;)

let's not get ahead of ourselves:confused: Ricard wasted plenty of chances already to improve his ranking and chances, let's hope this tournament is the breaking point in his career...

In pro tennis really he hasn't a lot of chances but this tournament could be a nice ending season story.

OK guys, just got back from the day session. It is rare to say this, but even in warmups Russell was intimidating Berankis (telling him where he should stand, that he needed to switch sides, etc). Berankis looked absolutely atrocious during warmups, missing several balls into the bottom of the net. It is not often that you can call a match during warmups, but this was one of those.

The match started off with four consecutive breaks in WTA-style fashion. Russell double faulted twice in both of his opening service games, and Berankis double faulted and hit three easy unforced errors to start his serving campaign off. Russell ran off to a 5-2 lead, only for Berankis to start finding his range. Berankis looked awesome to break Russell at 3-5, and ran off to a 40-0 lead at 4-5. Russell then played two excellent points that concluded in winners, and Berankis hit a let cord at deuce that seemed to hang forever before back on Berankis' side.

The 2nd set was absolutely no competition as the score would indicate. Russell kept hitting this low slice which just gave Berankis fits. Michael Russell would be an excellent coach, as he is a tremendous on-court tactician. It was obvious that Berankis loves pace, and Russell mixed up his shots brilliantly to constantly keep Berankis off guard. At 1-4 Berankis missed two easy overheads, and it was obvious that he was simply a beaten man at that point.

Berankis was the worst that he has been all tournament, but you have to tip your hat to Michael Russell as he started very slow himself. All and all, Russell is still unbelievably quick, and is capable of adjusting his game based on his opponent's weaknesses and style of play. Berankis is still young and very talented, but still has a lot to learn in terms of strategy and composure.

I'm going to try to make it to Dent-Kim, but no guarantees tonight. It should be interesting to see how Russell does against the winner tomorrow. Cheers!

My pleasure! My gut tells me that Taylor would win, as Russell has had very favourable matchups considering the surface. Russell got smoked by Kevin Anderson on these courts last year, and I think that the surface is very conducive to Dent's firepower. Russell usually never quits though, so we'll see! :wavey:

Hey guys, just got back. The doubles championship couldn't have gone to a nicer group of guys. The Battistone brothers were absolutely through the roof on this one, and were high fiving and shaking hands of everyone in sight. Dann Battistone said that they had reached an all-time low last week, and were considering hanging their racquets up. They decided to come here and just have fun in what might be their last tournament for awhile, and they took the thing down. The Battistones blew three straight receiver's choice points on return (including two match points) before winning a tense second set tiebreak. Good for the brothers Battistone!

In the Dent-Russell match, Michael Russell probably hit 95% of his shots to Taylor's backhand (and 100% of his 2nd serves). He simply wore Taylor down, and it was obvious after the 1st set that Russell had this one on ice. Russell seems like a somewhat arrogant guy (he's not nearly as affable as Dent), and both had very kind words for one another afterwords. There were some great rallies in the match, but you got the feeling that it was advantage Russell once a rally got past four shots or so. Michael Russell's return of serve is one of the best that I have seen on any level (and I have been to A LOT of tournaments), and I'll be very interested to see what he does in '10 if he stays healthy. However, as you guys know, often times a player's form in November fails to carry over into January. In his speech, Russell said "I honestly hope I'm not ever back here again, but this tournament is a great tournament if you HAVE to stoop down to play these things." I know he was just being honest, but damn!!!

Cheers!
