I agree, it's not such a good match. Some people say that Roddick's aces and powergame are boring, but now look at this match and you see that a match consisting of mainly baseline exchanges isn't necessarily more interesting

The Best Seats in the House
by Lisa Zimmerman
Wednesday, September 1, 2004

They are ubiquitous and yet in many ways, they are invisible. The ball boys and ball girls (known as ballpersons) who work the US Open each year are a key component, and although they stand right on the court, they are frequently overlooked while positioned mere feet from the players.

They are highly sought after positions. Each year roughly 250 ballpersons are culled from more than 400 applicants, which always include a significant percentage of veterans. The applicants are brought in for a testing day when they are put through their paces on the courts at the National Tennis Center and evaluated. This group is cut down to semifinalists who are brought back for a final tryout.

Tina Taps, Director of Ballpersons, outlined the specifics.

"Ballpersons need patience, perseverance and focus," Taps said. "They also need a knowledge of tennis and, of course, the physical ability to perform the job. For the net position, you must be quick and agile. You must get the ball off the court and be able to throw it accurately to the back position.

"The back position, these are the crew chiefs. They run the court in terms of changeovers, balls, tiebreakers, etc. They also need to be quick and agile, and must have a strong arm and strong accuracy."

There are also the intangibles, since the players and ballpersons generally do not speak to each other during matches, it is up to the ballperson to develop an instinct for what the player needs, whether it's balls, a towel or water. Certain players have different idiosyncrasies, so it is up to the ballpersons to figure those out. For example, some players, when serving an ace, want that same ball back for their next service. Others want three balls at a time, while some players want two or just one. Veterans make sure to pass along tips to the rookies during training, such as how to work the court or the quirks of different players.

Technique is also important. Ballpersons are taught to always pick up the ball with two hands, as in baseball, the most successful way to make a quick and clean grab.

Depending on weather and circumstances, ballpersons work an average of a 90-minute to two-hour shift before they are relieved. It is not uncommon for a long match to use more than one group of ballpersons. During the tournament, ballpersons are continually evaluated by their supervisors - grades that are factored in when applying next year.

While the majority of ballpersons are teenagers, it is a unique position and many people come back year after year. In fact, Gary Spitz, now a supervisor, is at his 25th consecutive US Open and Dorian Waring, also a supervisor, is working her 26th US Open since starting in 1977 (she took a two-year hiatus in the early 1980s).

Those with jobs use vacation time in order to take part. There are doctors, lawyers, executive recruiters -- anything and everything imaginable. Some, who can't take vacation, schedule their regular jobs around their Open hours, often working several hours before reporting to Flushing Meadows at 10 am each day or heading elsewhere after a long day on the courts.

Chanelle Tekaaho worked as a ballperson for six years and is now in her second year as a supervisor. In the interim, she attended college and became a schoolteacher. Tekaaho talked about what brings her back.

"It's a lot of fun and I have great friends, ones that I even see outside of the Open," she said. "Plus being able to see the matches up that close, you're right there, it's the best seat in the house."

Kristin Ogden, in her 12th year, summed it up, "Ballpersons, the umpires, all those types of jobs, these are the people who make the tournament tick."

Sorry for the long article guys, but it is quite an interesting read that I just had to share with ya'll. By the way one of my goals in life is to become a ballboy at the U.S. Open. Has anyone else wanted to do the same??

yes, but that is already a bit ago. I never did it, but I'm not anymore too keen to do because I think I'm already too old (even though the ballpersons are quite old at the US Open)

nEELy we still have a chance :) We have to keep believing in our dreams!
Some ballpersons at the USO are actually professionals (teachers, accountants, etc.) in real life. As long as our hand-eye coordination is in tact, we can still do it.
