KOOYONG COUP – AAMI CLASSIC SIGNS DEL POTRO

Tournament Director, Colin Stubs, announced today that World No. 5 and US Open winner, JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO, will assume alternate status at Kooyong next January (13-16).

Stubs confirmed seven of his eight-man field last month and, on request, is holding the eighth spot for world no. 1 ROGER FEDERER. “If Roger decides against playing at Kooyong, or another player withdraws before January 13, Juan Martin will step into the field. I am delighted that such strong back-up plans have been put in place” said Stubs.

Tsonga is in doubt for the Australian open due to an injury and therefore it would be unlikely that he would play Kooyong. Even if he does compete in the Open wouldnt he be more likely to rest and relax before the 2 weeks rather than play and exhibition tournament so close to crunch time.

Roger is undecided as well and was goint to wait till Doha to see if he was going to play.

Question is who will they get to replace him and roger at such short notice when everyones pre-Open tournaments are already decided?

Is there any deadline that Rogie has to tell them whether or not he's playing at Kooyong? I would imagine it has to be by the 10th, 11th, or 12th, right?

Roger really should make up his mind, its not fair to the tournament organizers. Looks like Del Potro will be in, which I'm more than happy about. It wouldn't surprise me if they get an aussie junior to come and play.

Federer declines Kooyong place

MELBOURNE: Roger Federer Sunday declined to play the AAMI Classic Australian Open tune-up event, with the late decision opening possible doors for the likes of rivals Andy Murray and Andy Roddick.

The Swiss, who lost to Nikolay Davydenko in the Doha semi-finals, had a place reserved in the eight-man field in Melbourne at the round-robin event considered the prime preparation for the Open from next Monday.

But Wednesday's start at Kooyong club, one-time home of the Grand Slam until just over two decades ago, now means that an eighth man must be chosen to make up the numbers.

Federer's management telephoned promoter Colin Stubs Sunday morning with the news that their man will use next week for private practise.

Stubs had been holding a place for Federer in the field, but will likely be spoiled for choice in exactly how to fill it. The choice will be announced Tuesday, one day before the start of the four-day special event.

Four players have already arrived: Novak Djokovic, Robin Soderling, Fernando Gonzalez and Tommy Haas.

2008 Australian Open champion Djokovic and Soderling, the French Open finalist against Federer last June, have both put in heavy practise sessions at Kooyong over the past two days.

On their way to Melbourne are US Open winner Juan Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

Murray and Roddick have put in quiet bids for spots in the field, with Murray considering asking for a practise match only.

Well Federer isn't playing, Roddick won't be playing either, so I guess its either Murray or perhaps Ljubo

Ivan Ljubicic completes AAMI Classic field at Kooyong

CROATIAN Ivan Ljubicic has grabbed the final spot in the eight-man field for the AAMI Classic starting at Kooyong tomorrow.

Ljubicic, the world No. 24, accepted the offer after world No.1 Roger Federer declined to play to protect soreness in his racquet arm.

The 30-year-old, a regular at Kooyong, joins a crack field which contains five of the top 10 players for the traditional tune-up for the Australian Open starting next week.

Promoter Colin Stubs confirmed that Scot Andy Murray, No.4, will play the last of four matches on Thursday against an opponent yet to be confirmed.

Pat Cash will play colourful Frenchman Henri Leconte in a nostalgic extra match after Saturday's final and the third and fourth places play-off

Ljubicic leads off the program at 11am tomorrow, against US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

After that will come:

Novak Djokovic v Tommy Haas

Fernando Gonzalez v Fernando Verdasco

Robin Soderling v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Del Potro plays it safe and withdraws from AAMI Classic

US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from tomorrow's AAMI Classic semi-final, the second injury casualty.

Del Potro cited an elbow injury as the reason for not wanting to play Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Promoter Colin Stubs is trying to arrange a replacement opponent for Tsonga, who will now go through to Saturday's final against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Stubs also must find a replacement player today for Swede Robin Soderling who wants to rest tendonitis in the right elbow.

Earlier today, Verdasco handed out a humiliating tennis lesson to world No.3 Novak Djokovic .

Verdasco booked his place in Saturday's final with a thumping 6-1 6-2 win over the mishitting Djokovic.

The Spanish left-hander reeled off the first five games and never let up his iron grip as he blasted aside the strangely out of touch Serb in the lopsided semi-final.

Djokovic must hope that he can regain touch in the third and fourth placed play-off match prior to Saturday's final.

Earlier, Chilean Fernando Gonzalez hauled his Australian Open campaign back on track with an impressive 6-2 6-4 win over German Tommy Haas.

Gonzalez, a straight sets victim of the in-form Verdasco in the opening round, needed just over one hour to tame the experienced Haas.
