Why do you(we) like Gasquet?

Okay so I do not know if it worth a new thread but I keep asking myself this question: Why other musketeers forums like tsonga and monfils are not more popular than this one?
I mean those two seems much more charismatics and Gasquet has a very bad reputation(at least in France)and image comparing to others french tennis players.
I really love Gasquet, his game and his personnality but I always thought I was more interested in weirdos so I am quite surprised that this forum is so active.
Being a Tsonga fan or a Simon fan seems easier but I can't help it, I prefer Gasquet.
Do you guys have any idea?

Are you saying that Gasquet is a weirdo?:D

Well I don't know about his reputation in France as I'm not French but I saw his backhand and that was it for me. His creativity too. He can be a really good shot maker and in these days where the tour lacks variety I think he is really needed.

Yes... the backhand did it for me too...;)

Maybe not a weirdo but unpopular. I do not read a lot of positive articles about him.

Bless him, he probably has a tough time in his own country.
Overall, I appreciate his game and talent. His backhand is divine, to say the least.;):wavey:

I'm Australian, so I love an underdog, his backhand is a thing of beauty, he's terribly sexy, he's shy and quite reserved, people accuse him of being lazy or lacking the head game and then he goes and plays an epic against Gonzales and the first time I ever saw him was when he played Mathieu at the Sydney International (I've forgotten the year.. I get so confused with summers because of the year changover in the middle over here.. aaaanyway) he hit a backhand winner down the line, Mathieu just stood there, looking like there was absolutely nothing he could have done, and Richie, cool as anything just puts his hand up as if to say, "sorry..!". Mathieu laughed, the crowd laughed and Richie turned to the side of the crowd I was sitting on and gave us the biggest, sexiest smile I've ever seen from him. I never forgot his name after that, and I've been dragging my parents and friends around the courts to find him ever since.

Emilie, i was just wondering, why is Richard unpopular or has a bad reputation in France? Is it because of the coke issue or even before that?

emilie

For a lot of reason:
Because he loses matches people believe he should win. He has the image of a a very introvert person without a strong character.
Especially people in france critize his interviews, the way he speak and the fact that he is negative: journalist says that he is not a champion in his attitude. People do not see him as a fighter.
In France at least, people like winners or players with an extravert attitude like Monfils or Tsonga, showmen.
Also and that's the worst for him: french tennis fan have been told that he will be the future federer by the media and they reproach him that( even if he is not responsible for that).
For example, journalists always repeat a legend: that Richard when he was a junior was beating(even destroying) Nadal very easily. Well that's totally untrue!! Gasquet faced Nadal only once when they were young(before being professionals) and Richard beat him but not easily at all!! It was very tight between them they compare them now of course which is very cruel!
I hate to read this because they always make the remark: Can you believe that Gasquet was destroying NAdal when they were juniors! And now look their different situation! blabla
well it is very hard to be a gasquet fan in France

Oh, i see.. it must be difficult for him knowing that he has a lot of critics in his own country. I was under the impression before that French tennis fans adore him, must be the media hype here in the US. On the bright side, he did gain a lot of fans worldwide. :)

I really think he has what it takes to be the next Federer, we (his fans) should just be patient and give him time. ;)

Thank you Emilie for explaining to us Richie's situation in France. Good thread too. :)

couldn't have said it better myself ;)

I am a huge fan of tennis, I play all the time and of course love watching it, so I really enjoy someone who plays an exciting game, and his backhand is exciting. Plus I reckon he is a nice guy

I love his tennis. I used to love Roger Federer cause the way he plays tennis is beatiful. But when I saw Gasquet in person in Tokyo, I just fell in love his tennis. To me, he plays tennis prettier than Roger. Look at his volley style. It is like a textbook volley. I myself go to tennis school and I always watch his game so that I cann play like him some day.

He's flaky, has a gorgeous English accent, has a backhand that leaves in me in awe, has a horrible forehand that can produce the most stunning of winners, has an intruging habit of changing racquet grip tape, he plays well on grass, has memorable upsets (Fed MC 2005 :worship:, Roddick Wimbledon 2007 ), has upsetting losses on a frequent basis = he's a head case, has a lovely backside, beautiful eyes, he's an all court winner , he's a Frenchie, he does cringe worthy Head and Shoulders ads, he produces magic.

Oh and he's the future winner of Wimbledon.

Because of this match

tsakm85EN_c

That is the first time I ever saw him or ever heard of him and the way he played was just jaw dropping.I think his tennis is more exciting than Fed's or anybodies because you literally never know what shot is going to come next from Richard. He has the most beautiful drop shots, volleys, backhand down the line, backhands cross court and even his forehand when it's flat can produce stunning winners or just set up another backhand winner.I've gotten used to the brain farting after so many years of following him and I think it goes along with his persona. He seems like a very nice person, he's quite, shy. Then you also have those eyes that no one knows exactly what color they are, his backside ;) and just the way he handles himself on court. He's just been probably the most exciting player that I have followed and I know for sure that he will one day win a slam.

Great answers everyone. :D I forgot to say that one of the reasons I love him (and probably the same with everyone else) is that he is just absolutely adorable with his bad disco dancing, pale and flabby little chest and belly, and his "fur shue". :awww:

Nice reasons everybody!
I think that he has a unique personality. He just cannot promote himself and that's why I like him. He is so natural comparing to other players! Also I believe he is a very classy guy, he is not jealous.
And last but not not least, if he seems terribly shy, he is a flirt. I like the fact that in France journalists do not speak about it(just few hints once in a while), it is just hilarious but it's France. If he was english or american everybody will know about that.
Well that's a good example of how he do not know how to promote himself: Safin gained popularity by showing off his "girlfriends":p

His jawdropping shotmaking especially the backhand, his backside, smile, eyes, unassuming personality and total class.

I became a RIchie fan after the 06 US OPen match with Hewitt where he hit 2 of the most outrageous shots while his legs were locked with cramps (didn't see the Fed Monte Carlo match or I'd have been hooked then). It is funny how flamboyant his game can be on the court and how mild mannered he appears off court - just adds to the mysterious but gorgeous package.

OH and his French accent "fur shure".

All these match videos are making me sad - I miss that spark and carefree play - hope he can get it back and then some!

speaking of bad dancing - do any of you remember that little choo choo backwards move at this year's AO?
Missie saw that and said -" we need to work on those dance moves , hope I get the chance to fix that "
at least he did not bite his lip and do the arm swing thing like so many men do when they are dancing :)

why do I like Richard ? I like his game - it is effortless and beautiful when it is on
not too much grunting- and then there are the moments of headcaseyness , that make you just wonder what is going on
Perfection is overrated - frankly it is boring ( see Federer, Roger - bland as white bread - not for me at all )
and I like that he seems to be such a genuinely nice young man
is he a flirt ? maybe a little - but he has NO GAME in English - in french he may be as suave a Casanova - but in English he comes across as sweetly shy and awkward - but endearing all the same

I think that helps him actually... I'm working on my French, but there's no way I can keep up with him when he talks. I genuinely have no idea whether or not he is even remotely articulate (which is quite high on my list of dream guy attributes), but in English he's just so awkward and it's really really cute. My favourite thing to do is watch him listening to someone speaking English - because you know he's genuinely trying hard to understand what they're saying.
