I'm surprised he hasn't got his own cheering thread yet. There was a bit of talk about him following the Burnie challenger I think (could be confused with another player). He recently turned 19 and is now ranked at 675 but will go up after this week. He made the final of a US Futures tounament this week and plays the talented young American Alexander Domijan in the final. Good luck to him.

This is his profile from Tennis Australia - http://www.tennis.com.au/pages/PlayerProfile.aspx?id=4&pageId=1047&HandlerId=2&PlayerID=284

Matt Reid played his first full season on the senior circuit in 2009 and recorded some solid results on the doubles court at Futures level, demonstrating his versatility by reaching four quarterfinals with a variety of partners. The foundation for his success was built on a solid second half of 2008, in which he made the transition from junior to senior tennis and won his first two futures titles with compatriot Dane Propoggia. Earlier in 2008 he reached the French Open junior final with German Jan-Frederik Bruncken, and the Wimbledon junior final with compatriot Bernard Tomic. Matt began playing tennis at the age of six because his family had an old asphalt tennis court in their back yard. A twin to sister, Ellen, Matt also has a younger brother, Nick, and sister, Grace. Matt began his schooling in Australia but visited the Nick Bollettieri Academy in the USA when he was 15 and was offered a scholarship. He boarded at the Academy for two years so that he could complete Year 12 via online education while training. His tennis heroes are Pat Rafter because of his modesty and sportsmanship, and Lleyton Hewitt for his on-court focus and determination. Matt’s favourite tournament is Wimbledon, the venue of his greatest moment on a tennis court to date – fighting out an epic boys’ doubles final before falling 10-12 in the final set. When not on the tennis court, Matt enjoys playing rugby union, poker and surfing. His favourite movie is Never Back Down, his favourite artists are Chris Brown and Coldplay and his favourite food is sushi. He enjoys playing tennis because he likes competing and meeting new people from all over the world. His ambition is to turn professional and since the start of 2008 he has been based in Florida with travelling coach Stan Boster.

He ended up winning the final and his first futures title!

I saw him play Australian Open juniors in 2008 and you could see there was talent there he just choked big time. Why do we produce so many chokers?

To be fair Matt has always been capable of results like this. I remember as a junior he would score a few upsets during GA and GS tournaments but never really capatilised fully on his ability, a first round loss at the Aussie Open juniors as the number 8 seed specificly comes to mind, which I was in attendance for (Matt was literally crying at the sidelines with his parents after the match, musta meant a lot to him). Would be interesting if he drew Bernard round 1 here in Brissy. I'm going to watch him play Reister tommorow morning, I think he is a real shot to qualy here and god knows we need another player under the age of 20 playing ATP tournaments.

Good luck Matt, your good enough just needs to keep his cool.

Agree with you here matchu, I will make a point of seeing this match too,

Amazing Matt couldnt get into NSW NHPA as scholarship holder a few years ago on Tennis Australia Criteria , so went to states, worked out to be the best move.

There a quite a few players under 20 playing ATP events the past year or too.

Hope Matt gets through ....

I remember hearing about this too from one of the NSW coaches he was ranked about 18 ITF Junior when he was 17 because he had been travelling around the world getting experience but because he hadn't done any national tournaments he was ranked 6th in TA juniors and you had to be in the top 5 or something so he didn't qalify for any type of assistance. How stupid.

He is one of about 4 or 5 aussies that could qualify but it would of been great to watch him play againtst Serra if he had qualified. I would loke to watch a match between Matt and Smeets. Because Matt is clearly on the way up and Smeets i think will slowly regain his ranking but not to something like 120 maybe 200. When do the Qualifiying wildcards get announced and when does the final maindraw wildcard get announced.

Matt's playing on the Green Clay at a 10k Futures Tournament in Vero Beach, Florida.
His results so far:
R1: Matt Reid (AUS) (6) def (Q) Roman Recarte (VEN) (1065) 7-6(10) 6-2
R2: Matt Reid (AUS) (6) defeated (Q) Olivier Sajous (HAI) (1253) 6-4 6-4
QF: Matt Reid vs (Q) Nicolas Barrientos (COL) (NR)

Another Aussie who has been given an easy draw this week. Good thing is he hasn't faltered. His quarter opponent knows the area well. He played Division 2 college tennis for The University of West Florida. He beat Dayne Kelly in the second round but Matt be the favourite in this match.

Matt won his Quarter Final 76(5) 57 61. He now plays young American Alexander Domijan in the semis. May remember last time they played was in a futures tournament final last year where Domijan was leading 76(7) 54 and only needed to serve it out before he cramped up and had to retire at 5-5 giving Matt his first futures title.

jmf07
05-02-2010, 01:44 AM

Yep he got a great draw but he still had to win those matches and he did ,if he takes out the final i wonder how much his ranking will move up

jmf07
05-02-2010, 07:06 AM
If he wins the final he is looking at around the mid 420's (up 70ish places) and if he loses he will move to around the mid 450's (up 40ish places). That's not factoring in the drops and rises of the other players ranking points though.

Matt has qualified for the 50k Sarasota Challenger on the Green Clay this week.

QR1: Reid def Basilashvili (GEO) (595) 64 64
QR2: Reid def (2)Kretschmer (GER) (332) 62 64
QR3: Reid def Monroe (USA) (589) 63 64

In the first round he plays Monroe again who got in as a lucky loser. Excellent chance of progressing.

Matt is playing in the Carson Challenger Qualies this week. He beat Phillip King in the first round 67 61 64. He plays Maciek Sykut in the second round. Maciek played college tennis for Florida State until last year where he had achieved a college singles rank of 79. Matt should win.

I watched Matt's match. The 1st set he was serving huge and putting away the rubbish.

His serve started to go off and Look is solid, so got more balls back and Reid was getting pissed off.

He lead 2-0 in the 3rd, then lost the break straight away. It was either winner or cheap error. Look served for it at 5-2, then got broken. Reid serves a DF match point down.

Matt's been given a nice draw for Panama. He won his first round match against Joaquin-Jesus Monteferrario (ranked 535) 46 63 62. Matt will be the favourite to win his second round clash against Roberto Quiro. Matt's having a good week in a 15k Polish clay future this week. In the first round he got by Pavel Filin 6-0 6-3 and then he beat the second seed David Goffin 7-5 6-2. Ha - breaks back for 2-4, but then goes 0-40 down and serves a double to hand back the break, 1-5.
Matt should try playing the open court instead of hitting winning opportunities straight back to his opponent.

And in this case two weeks due to the US Open. ;)
Also depends on how many points he has to defend this week from last year.

Will break into the top 300 for the first time on the back of his 3rd futures titles of the year (3-4 in finals in 2011). Very solid year of futures and hopefully he can continue his progress next year. A real contender at the wild card play off.

Matt put in an impressive performance losing 7-6(12) 3-6 4-6 to Andreev. Did well to get the first set but his first serve went missing in the second set with a first serve percentage of 30% and Andreev sent down 10 aces in the third set. Encouraging signs from Matt.

Reid had two match points while leading 5-4.
On his second match point, a backhand from Naso was called out by a linesperson.

Good result for Matt Reid in Blumenau in South America - gets up in 3 sets against Tiago Lopez.
He was a bit wobbly in the 3rd after winning a tight first set 7-5, dropped the second 2-6, then went up an early break to lead 2-0 in the 3rd set. He saved a breakpoint to get to 3-0, then dropped his serve to get to 3-2. He managed to steady the ship though, improving his serve from a low 39% to above 50%, in winning the 3rd set 6-3. Good fight Matt.

Won the first, serving well, 6-4, lost the second 4-6, serving poorly, saves 5 of 7 break-points, converting 2 of 4 on his serve to get to the tie-break. On serve at 4-5, loses the point to face match point at 4-6. Saves the first mp on his serve, saves the second on Weintraub's serve to level and change at 6-6. Breaks Weintraub again and serves out the tb 8-6 to win the match.

Also noteworthy - Duckworth and Millman did not play in the Wild Card Play-off and got AO MD WC's. Saville lost 1st round...

All good points, they need to change the wildcard playoff and make it more attractive to play. Otherwise they may as well make it a playoff for a qualifying wildcard. Still in the end I think they got it mostly right across all the tournaments this summer.

Matt is racking up some late season wins in a South Korean Challenger. He's had back-to-back straight set wins and finds himself with a winnable quarter-final.

The big question is: will he get an Australian Summer main draw wild card next year? No luck whatsoever thus far.

Year-end rank in 2011 = 270, age = 21
Year-end rank in 2012 = 311, age = 22
Year-end rank in 2013 top 220 or higher, age = 23

He's at the level where he's just not quite young enough or ranked high enough to be a serious contender for the cards. But more wins here and/or next week will definitely help.

Haha - Matt rides his luck - he got the No.8 seed berth because Jones withdrew coz of injury. Aussie helps Aussie.
Well done Matt - keep the run going.

Matt was finalist in the OZ WC play-off last year and missed out on the WC then, so his chances this year - perhaps if he wins the Challenger he may have a chance.

Each year is different as you have a different mix of players. The way I see it currently of the four discretionary AO wildcards Duckworth amd Kyrgios would be locked in. The other two might go to Groth and Kokkinakis. I think Reid would be next in line, he would be ahead of Mitchell, Saville and Patrick-Smith despite their ages. I think Thompson amd Wittington will get qualifying wildcards. All just my opinion.

That is assuming Ebden doesnt need one. I think Reid's best hope is for Groth to win the wildcard playoff therefor opening up another spot or of course winning it himself.

^^ Agree.
Ebden very likely won't need one now.
But I think Duckworth, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are locked in.
The remaining two could go anywhere and Reid is a chance but could easily be over-looked again. His biggest asset is he qualified for Wimbledon.

It's been an ordinary finish to the year for Matt losing alot of winnable matches. He will need to turn it around for the wildcard playoff.

Not the best result to end the season, a loss to a lower ranked and younger player, Ben Mitchell, will not do his cause for a AO WC any good.

Very disappointed for Matt. He'll be gutted with his Aussie results from the play off loss to Akira to here. He had some great results last year especially Wimbledon, so 10 steps back over the past couple of months. I hope he can bounce back.

Reid takes the Bernie title! Nice wins over Ito and Moriya in the semi-finals and final. He's got a good draw in West Lakes too.

He'll be ranked around 180-185 come Monday, pipping his career high.

Good win for Matt, who is normally a bit nervous playing younger Aussies.
