Well, it's really hard to keep your expectations in check with this tournament. :p To put it carefully, he should win a little more than "some" matches unless he has a major meltdown or is injured. And furthermore, a first round bye? Has LA always been a 28 draw? I doubt it.

Well, at the very least these are good conditions for a smooth start on HC. We'll see what happens.

Hat-Trick?

Can't wait. ;)

Well,I hate work of mine, don't have time as used to have ,but I haven't missed anything within this board so it's better that way :p

Can't wait for Tommy's match, this has to be a great tour after very disappointing exit from last year to Donald Young
Now ,as #1 seeded player it would be ridiculous to put Tommy aside as he really have that chance over all players in th draw,a possible encounter with Safin  would be very cool ! ah dammit I can't wait!

So Jesse Levine is Tommy's first opponent. He beat him last year in Indy 7-6, 6-2 ... Levine's a lefty, so it might again take Tommy some time to get used to him, but in the end it shouldn't be too much trouble for our man.

Well the good news is that Tommy was there yesterday! Bad news is I missed him. :crying2:They only have one practice court, so I staked it out all day, not knowing if he'd practice there or not. After about 6 hours I figured he wasn't going to show so I got up and walked around. I came back to the practice court and was watching Ginepri practice. Someone saw my shirt (I had a couple tshirts made that say "Auf Geht's Tommy!" with the German flag on them) and said Tommy Haas is over there. So I head over but he'd just gotten into a car. Dang it! Oh well, will try again today. His first match should be a night match tomorrow vs. Levine.

Success! After 6 hours I finally saw Tommy!!! He came walking by and I asked if I could get a pic. He said yes, so I found someone to take it but the strap was over the lens so I said wait a sec and Tommy goes "yeah, the thing's in the way". So funny. So she takes the pic and I tell him it's my birthday and he wishes me a happy birthday. Then I asked if he'd sign my shirt and he did, he said he liked it. He was so nice and so sweet. I wished him good luck. Wanted to tell him everyone from his website and MTF are supporting him but it's a wonder I got out as much as I did since my brain was mush! Will try to tell him tomorrow. He plays the second night match after the Bryan brothers. I'm still on Cloud 9 right now!!

Indeed!

Well, myp2p.eu says that there will be no streams for L.A. buw maybe atdhe.net or channelsurfing.net will have some. I don't know about the ES player, either, but I don't think that this tournament will be featured in there...When was the last time ES featured an ATP tournament in their player except from the GS...?

I must get up at 5.50 a.m. tomorrow morning, Tommy should play about this time. 9 hours from L.A. to Germany, right?

thefly

Yup, should start around 5:30.

Concerning the ES player - actually there are a few ATP tournaments covered as you can read in the program advertisement on the website, and LA is one of them, but I stil have to find out if that's restricted to the normal program of ES/ES2, or if there's more to it. I doubt it though ...

Hi all. Here's my report from yesterday. Tommy arrived about 6pm. He signed my second tshirt but was in match mode so didn't chat much, altho I made him laugh :). He signed some autographs & posed for a few pics then went to get ready to practice. Levine was practicing while I was waiting for Tommy to come practice. I hadn't thought Levine would be any problem but I started getting a little nervous when I saw how he was playing. Note to self: don't watch Tommy's opponents warm up! Then Tommy came and practiced for maybe half an hour or so. He looked really good, but would scowl when he missed a shot. After he was done he signed some more autographs for the kids. When he was warming up at the match his serves were either going long or into the net and I started to worry a little bit again. But never fear, he had no problems as you can see by the score. A little nervous about Marat. If I see him today I'll try to trip him. Just kidding! ;) Oh, you'll be happy to know there were a lot of people yelling Tommy's name and some guys yelling "auf geht's". One guy kept yelling "the Haas is on fire!". So he definitely got a lot of support last night. :D

Tommy showed up around 2:45pm today for practice. He practiced for nearly an hour and a half. There were a few occasions where that temper came out and he was cursing in German. Wish I understood German! At one point he netted a ball and threw his racket against the fence. Other than that he was looking pretty good. Saw Safin practice before Tommy and I feel confident Tommy can take him. After his practice I asked Tommy if he was playing a day match or a night match tomorrow. He said he didn't know yet but probably a night match. Turns out it is a night match. I also asked him how his knees were feeling and he said hanging in there, thanks. Still can't get over what a nice guy he is. Auf Geht's tomorrow, Tommy!!!!

My friend and I were sitting behind one of the baselines and at one point during the 1st game of the second set he yelled "punch him in the face!". It was so funny, we were cracking up. Glad he turned it around in the second set. Tonight should be interesting since this is Querrey's home turf. He'll have his Samuri's there supporting him, so my friend and I are going to have to yell our lungs out for Tommy to counter them. AUF GEHT'S TOMMY!!

Great, first I was like "where's that return game coming from", and than Tommy hands Querrey the match point. Thank you very much.

So, not a really successfull start to the USO Series. Tommy doesn't look as comfortable on court as he did the last couple of months. Don't know if he still needs a little time to adjust. Maybe it's the kind of different situation that Tommy suddenly finds himself in. His recent success came pretty much out of nowhere, and now all of a sudden people expect him to win these matches again. That shouldn't be all that new for him, but it's still different compared to the rest of the year so far.

We'll see how he handles that in the next weeks.

well said, I guess Querrey was simply way too good, pushing tommy to the limits. But in any way I was so damn sure Tommy should win.. Not that great start for sure but its better knowing he lost to a guy that played 3 straight finals... Still,it shall be interesting in the next weeks.

I had a bad feeling about the Match right from the start  Why I don't know  Because Sam had just lost the Indy Final to Robby Ginepri who had only won 2 Tournaments during his career (now it is 3) go figure  I had really wanted Tommy to win this Tournament  Some of the problem may have been that Tommy has played a good bit of tennis recently. He didn't seem comfortable with the conditions in L.A. I remember even while defeating Marat he kept not liking the pressure of the tennis balls. And he practiced for like a hour before this Final (according to the commentators) so may be he left his game on the practice court who knows  Still he will continue to pick up points for his ranking at least so I guess we will just have to be happy for that :) But I don't feel very happy :bigcry:

Shame for Tommy, but not a big deal really. It's only a 250 and he got a couple of matches under his belt, would have liked to see him win it but I'll just look forward to seeing how he does in the bigger tournies coming up ^^

I agree. It was not a bad start for the US Open Series. Tommy said he wants his best form in New York. There's still some room to improve for the next weeks. And every match should help him.

We need to calm down our expectations a little bit. He played at least the semifinals in L.A. and will definitely be ranked inside the Top 20 after the US Open because he only has to defend his semi from Washington and the USO 2nd round until the Australian Open! Would someone have thought that Tommy will be ranked as high as that a few months ago? I don't think so. He has come deep into every tournament since RG and played a less strong week in L.A.. Who cares? He cannot win every match now. Of course there are ups and downs. The only thing Tommy needs to do is to have more ups and less low downs. Tommy considers this week in L.A. as a "down" so he sees a big room to improve which is a very good sign.
The weird thing about sports is that a player can play badly for 2 years but if he improves his form and has some good runs in the tournaments the expectations will rise astronomically and everyone, even his own fans, expect the player to continue his good run. He had good run in L.A. although he didn't play near to his best. Remember last year? 1st round loss against Donald Young...Now he obliterates players like him, e.g. Levine, who have no chance against Tommy, anymore.
I think it's good that he did not reach the finals, Washington is much more important than L.A.. Go Tommy!

First, I don't think that Querrey was too strong; if I remember correctly, Tommy overall hit more winners, which says a lot about a straight set loss.

Anyway, guess we were a little spoiled again, not used to a loss against somebody else than Roger anymore. ;) Well, it sure would have been nice to see that 13th tournament win, and getting the hat-trick in LA, but I agree, LA isn't really that important, and I think Tommy doesn't care too much either anymore. For him it's important now that he gets some matches on hc under his belt, because I indeed think that he still has to adjust a little bit, getting his movement and balance right, feeling the ball better. For players like Querrey this is not much of a problem, since they pretty much only have one kind of game and don't really play a role on other surfaces. Tommy on the other hand just has an amazing run on grass behind him, to which he completely adapted, and after all that S&V and tactical slice game, I don't find it surprising that he needs some matches to find back to his powerful baseline tennis. It was already on impressive display here and there, but ultimately still plagued by a truck load of UE's.
Btw, the good thing to take away from LA was the way Tommy never held back. Even with all those errors, he never got passive but instead continued to go for the lines, and that's at least something I suppose. :)

Now there are three big tourneys ahead to improve. And it's about time for another good run at a Masters Series event, no? ;)

Exactly :) But in fact there will be 4 big tourneys (Washington, Montreal, Cincy and the USO) so Tommy really has some good chances to improve. I'm really curious right now about Tommy's after USO season with the masters in Shanghai and Paris where he can gain lots of extra points. I guess he will be seeded there if nothing strange happens!

Right, but I meant three tournaments before the Open. :) The "post-USO" season will certainly be interesting, but I think right now, the Open are Tommy's top priority, maybe THE event of the year, so it's currently a little hard to look beyond that one. ;)

I think making it to the semi's is pretty darn great. I'm not sure what the problem was last night, but my friend texted me during the match and said the commentators said something about the light bothering his eyes. Can't confirm this, but at the Courier-Chang match afterward Courier made a comment about the lights. I also know the Samuri's were obnoxious as hell, cheering for every point Sam won and Tommy lost. They didn't sit down the whole night, and would start yelling "BREAK BREAK BREAK" when Tommy was down 0-15. So that probably got Tommy riled up. Go win DC now, Tommy!

I had forgotten in my efforts to figure out what went wrong was the fact that Tommy had knee problems just before this Tournament. But his movement didn't look bad to me  Why is it that people from other countries can cheer their players on and it all seems so happy and friendly like Marcos' fans, but when Americans try to do the same thing it turns out ugly and awful :ras:
