Bedene Brothers (SLO) - Aljaž and Andraž

It's nice to see how Slovenian tennis is developing in recent years. There are 14 Slovenian players ranked this week (3 of them are top200). Kavcic, Gregorc, Zemlja and Tkalec are well known for those who follow the Challengers circuit, while Semrajc is a quite solid player of the Futures circuit. The players who are in their first steps as pro we can keep an eye on them are Gollubovic and the Bedene brothers, especially Aljaz Bedene (his brother is named Andraz).

Aljaz Bedene, born in 1989, is now ranked 848 - his points of an Austrian futures final will be computed only in next ranking, so he will have a jump soon. Until this year, his record was 1-2 in main draws. Now his career record is 21-14. Reached 2 finals this year, Austria F5 and Slovenia F2, and one semifinal, in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Went through qualies in a lot of tournaments but soon I guess he won't need to play qualies for futures tournaments. Had a career high combined ranking as junior of 31.

His twin brother, Andraz, made his début as pro this year, has now a 2-6 carrer record and successfully qualified in 5 tournaments to main draw. Lost a match to his brother in Austria F5 2nd round, 6-3 7-5.

Bedene brothers playing in Slovakia F1 this week.

Aljaz won his first round match, by defeating countryman Zoran Golubovic 6-4 6-1. He is ranked #707 this week and faces seed Andrej Martin in next round (Andrej is his doubles partner). He can get revenge of Austria F6 semifinal.

Andraz plays his first round match against Austrian Patrick Telawetz.

Great to see threads regarding Slovene tennis players. Good luck to both of them, I'm just surprised they're not playing doubles together. Even as juniors they rarely played together. Quite odd actually, one would expect twins to be inseperable but this is obviously not the case with Bedene brothers, even though they travel and play at the same tournaments:confused:

Yes, it seems odd they don't play doubles together, I don't know why they opted for playing splitted, maybe they think they spent too much time together and playing with others players would add more to their games.

Andraz won his first round match, 6-4 6-1, faces next round Jan stancik, seed#7 but not active lately, so i think he has good chances of reaching quarterfinals.

Aljaz and Andrej lost in doubles to the dangerous Slovak pair Pazicky/Sikora in a close match, 4-6 7-5 11-13. Andraz is not playing doubles in Stupava.

another semifinal for Aljaz, but a tough one (anyway, he was lucky Semjan withdrew, he could have faced Marek in QF).
Klizan back to his best, it seems.

Aljaz ranked 520 this week, plays tomorrow the final of Austria F9. Last week he skipped Austrian future probably because he was tired (won two futures in previous weeks). In the last three tournaments he partnered his brother in doubles ;) Aljaz is also building his ranking in singles.

Aljaz deserves a WC for Ljubliana Challenger. :)

Obviously Aljaž is going great guns at the moment, winning Barletta CH, SF is Blumenau and now doing well in Santos.

But what happened to Andraž?

He hasn't played a singles match since last August and last played doubles with Aljaž in Barletta.

Boreas

I'd say that after 2 years of playing futures tournaments and not really breaking out of playing qualies he realized that professional tennis might not be the right way for him.

Aljaz retired yesterday after the first set due to dizziness.

His next tournament will be Roland Garros - perhaps a bit too long pause:unsure:

I guess it was heat exhaustion, they were saying the conditions in Santos were pretty brutal.

Aljaz Bedene is injured again and hasn't played since coming back from Brazil in April. Apparently he'll be back for the Davis Cup tie against Italy. It's the same wrist that bothered him the last time when he needed to undergo a surgery.

Andraz Bedene reached the semis of a 10k in Serbia last week and retired in the semifinal - also due to wrist injury... Will take a few weeks off.

What a bad luck. Aljaz some years ago has got a problem with wrist like you wrote, but i'm really hoping that's ok now. I heard Aljaz is practicing now and everything is ok with his wrist.

I hope that he will be back to Challengers, because he is so very good player!

I was at his match today. It was still pretty hot by the time they took to the court after the WTA comedy prelude. The first set was dominated by Anderson's serve and forehand. Aljaz wasn't getting much of a look on Anderson's serve and his returns weren't returned with too much pace or depth so Anderson had quite a few easy putaways and was able to run around onto his forehand quite often to finish the point off. Anderson was simply too good.

In the second set I think Aljaz started to get more of a read on Anderson's serve and was able to direct more traffic to Anderson's backhand side. He was starting to look real good. His serve wasn't in too much danger and he started to dictate the rallies putting some real depth and angle on his shots. He was also mixing it up a bit with the slice with some success. Anderson wasn't too happy when he went down the break but he managed to steady the ship in the third.

At the start of the third I was confident Aljaz was going to win it. They traded serves until Aljaz's double faultathon. The second serve which he missed to give Anderson the decisive break missed by a long way. I think every point Anderson won in that game to break was off a Aljaz double fault. In the final game Aljaz had a few questionable calls go against him. At 30-0 he had one where Anderson hit a questionable winner but I was on the other side of the court. Aljaz wasn't too impressed with the match point either and he seemed to half heartedly play it expecting it to be called out but personally I thought it had skid off the line.

In regards to the AO Aljaz seemed to be in good condition at the end of the match although there were not too many long rallies but it was hot. He also played 4 or 5 drop shots which were just awful and got the treatment they deserved from Anderson. Overall though he played a solid match.

Queen's result

R1 PHM 7-6(5) 6-3:)
R2 Querrey 6-7(11) 7-5 6-7(5) He had 2MP 6-5 at 3rd set and couldn't convert:sad:
But he can adopt to playing on grass:) Hopefully he gets good draw at Wimbledon.
