I heard there is a plan to move Davis cup tie from Lielupe to Arēna Rīga (big indoor hall in Rīga)

At the moment it sounds more like wishful thinking. One obstacle is that the Riga Dinamo hockey team is scheduled to play in the arena on Monday and on Wednesday, and a commentator on esports.lv says that the arena has to be available for tennis during the whole week. Another obstacle is that it would make sense financially only if Gulbis participates in the tie (and he hasn't confirmed this yet). And another thing I remember reading a year or two ago is that the arena is not built for tennis, I remember this matter was discussed already and there was a technical problem, something didn't fit. I don't know, maybe it can be solved.

At the moment I give less than 10% that the tie will take place in the arena but I'll be glad if I'm wrong. The tickets sure would be more expensive in the arena but at least there would be place for everyone.

 I guess DC in Latvia with Gulbis differs much from DC played in Latvia without Gulbis. As there wasn't much people who looked forward to watch such exciting matches against Moldova, it was OK to buy tickets in the box office in Riga.

But since Ernests is announced to play this tie, I really don't know what to advise.. It's better to ask people who had an experience of booking tickets for DC when Ernests played.
I remember some MTFers were at DC matches against Bulgaria with Gulbis, they posted their reports in our old thread. I have no idea if they still visit the board..

Moreover it was possible to buy the tickets right at the entrance and that's what some people did. But the situation is different now... I don't know the number of people interested in tennis and willing to go to Lielupe to watch Gulbis and support the team.

There was a bit of video in today's evening news. They asked Ernests (as the leader of our team) about our chances to win, and he was very cute  He said he feels great, the team atmosphere is great, they've played together for a long time now, they're all friends, the practices have been going well and basically our chances are good

Edit: Here's a quote from the Diena article:

Kopumā jūtos labi. Pirmo reizi sezonā jūtu, ka spēlēju to tenisu, kādu man vajadzētu spēlēt. Netraucē apziņa, ka no mana snieguma lielā mērā atkarīgs komandas rezultāts. Tā ir realitāte. Mēģināšu parādīt labāko sniegumu, katru reizi, kad vajadzēs iet laukumā.

"I feel good. For the first time this season, I feel I'm playing the kind of tennis I should be playing. The fact that my matches will be key to winning doesn't bother me (doesn't pressure me). It's the reality. I'll try to play my best every time I'm on the court."

I've got good news for you :) Bookmark this link - http://www.ltvarhivs.lv/ltv/14/4837

You can watch the news there. Today's video is not there yet but I think it should be added later tonight. You have to click the red 'Skatīties' to watch. It works only in IE. Once you click the link it will ask you to get a licence, it's fine, the licence is free :p You also have to install the ActiveX control when it asks you. If you get stuck just close the window and start again. Once you get the licence you'll be able to watch the video for 48 hours.

And now the even-better news. There's a video from Lielupe also in yesterday's news! That's from September 16th. It starts at around 34:00 so you have to fast-forward the most of the video. The ff'ing is very, khm, not-user-friendly, you'll see what I mean, you have to press the ff button and then wait 5 minutes and then see where you are and fast forward again

Happy watching :wavey:

I feel a bit sad and sorry for Andis - the stands didn't show him any support. He looked like a beaten dog after the match. :awww:

Nah, they would have forgiven Ernests, besides we're not that blood-thirsty

The photos I took are mostly no good but the videos are pretty decent (as they should be for the size they take up, I have approx. 30 mins on video and it takes up 3 GB ). So I'm thinking the best thing to do is make a torrent out of those. I have the coin toss, some random episodes from the first two sets, then nothing from sets 3 & 4 and then a lot from the fifth set including Ernest's break(s) and the end of the match.

I don't think he was flirting with the umpire. He didn't look that happy.

:haha: Gangster Ernests! He'll F up a B**ch! Who was that directed to? The Umpire he was flirting with?

He didn't look happy at the lines person. Wonder if he threated to shove a ball down her throat. The pictures where he is yelling at her makes me giggle. Hes so cute when hes angry!

This was the first time I was present at a Gulbis match. Of course, I knew his game, his service motion and his other habits from watching TV/live streams before but one thing I hadn't noticed earlier (or perhaps he just started doing it recently) was his come-ons. I mean, usually when he hits a nice winner he just shakes his arm/wrist and doesn't get overly excited about it. Last night, especially in the fifth set, he was getting so pumped up that he did his come-on's Nadal-style  Maybe I caught one of them on video, I'm not sure. I was actually happy to see that, I think he needs to display these positive emotions more. But that stuff I wrote about being pissed off at line judges, he needs to tone it down.

There were several controversial points in the match. The biggest was probably in the last game when Gulbis was serving. He was 15-0 and then he served and a line judge called it out but Gulbis didn't notice it (I think) and thought it was an ace so he started preparing for the next point, got the towel and all. But Gregorc thought there would be a second serve so he stayed where he was. Gulbis noticed that and went to the umpire to find out what was going on. I couldn't hear them but after speaking for a while Gulbis went back and started preparing for the next point (not a second serve). At that point the scoreboard switched to 30-0 so Gregorc went to the umpire. Apparently the umpire had overruled the call and it was an ace. Gregorc was sure it had been out but there was nothing he could do. So Gulbis got the point. The umpire was a woman, by the way, and she was speaking so quietly that sometimes I couldn't hear her over the public.

There were at least two times that Gregorc was serving a second serve and it was out (I could see it clearly and everyone around me could see it too) but it was not called out and they kept playing. The first time was in the first set and the DF would have given Ernie a BP but instead Gregorc got game point. Oh well. Maybe the bad light was the cause of the bad line calls.

Overall it seemed that Ernests was dissatisfied with something or other for a lot of the match, for most of the time actually, that's why I was so happy to see some positive emotions from him towards the end.

You all probably have noticed how, when he is receiving, he likes to take the ball (I mean after the play has stopped) and hit it to the ballkids at the other end. I thought it was funny how a couple of times he tried to get to the ball to hit it back but the ballkid got there first and didn't notice Ernie hovering above them and wanting the ball  The ball often got behind the, how do you call them, the advertisement boards? It was hard for ball kids to go behind them, between the boards and the wall, and get to the ball, and a couple of times Ernie even tried to do it himself just to get to the ball first

To be honest,Ernests reminded me yesterday sometimes Harry Potter playing quidditch. Ernests didn't even try to move for ball. He just stood with his mouth widely opened as if he was waiting for the Golden Snitch to fly into it.

Oh,and Deniss almost ran into stands where Erica and Camilla were

While we are on the train to Lielupe, we discussed yesterday's match once and came to one more conclusion. In all his efforts to be like Marat Ernests totally forgot one important thing: no matter how bad you play for yourself, you should do more than you can when you play for your team. This is what Marat always did. Ernests may have Marat's style,Marat's coach, pageboy like Marat used to have and probably girls like Marat has but without that thing he is not Marat.

I'm back from Latvia, which is strange - feels like it was just yesterday that I left? :o So my visit was rather short, unfortunately, and on top of everything I caught a cold and sounded like an elephant blowing my nose all the time

Some random observations from the weekend (we were thinking of these with Cami last night :D)
-Pageboy is a very enthusiastic cheerleader. He actually has this really scary look on his face when he's yelling "davai", and I just wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley..

-Pageboy tried to run us over with a big, black, shiny car. I guess he doesn't want to share Ernests :p (he was moving the car closer to the tennis center, and I guess wanted to show off by driving very fast)
---> In general I feel like he's EVERYWHERE. He somehow turns up behind every corner..

-I asked to be in a photo with Ernests, together with Cami's Latvian flag. However, when I suggested the flag should also be in it he said "OK, but you hold it, I'm too tired". Which made me feel both embarrased and confused, so in the picture I'm sort of trying to hide the flag behind my back. At least he's smiling in the picture, so I forgave him for the strange response..! (I mean, who's too tired to hold his own flag?)

-Ernests' temper. He was complaining about calls, which I do understand, since the line men were quite horrible, but I think he used way too much energy on it. He also broke a racket during the doubles, and as we've all seen in pictures, showed the finger..

-The team spirit! It was a lot of fun to watch them during the breaks.

-Karlis & his fashion taste. The brotherhood of the rippes jeans, indeed.. :hearts:

These are all the observations my tired brain can come up with right now.. All in all I had a great time, I don't even regret getting this horrible cold that makes me feel like my head is gonna explode. I hope that next year I'll have the chance to go back to Riga for DC!

oh my the pageboy trying to kill you, I would have loved to say that baby faced kid drive a luxurious car

Yeah, that was impressive :drive:

All in all the DC was great. There were more people than in March. (I try not to think that I haven't seen Russian team since April last year and have seen Latvian team for the second time this year). :o The crowd was supportive too. Well, during Andis match on Friday everybody was still asleep probably, but during Ernests match people woke up. And it was loud indeed. Though the whole Friday was a bit disappointing, because Andis lost and because Ernie needed 5 sets to win against Gregorc. :tape:
On Saturday we kind of expected problems on Denis serve considering his latest results. They did struggle with it more but it was quite surprising to see Denis running for every single ball while Ernests just stood there watching him.
I don't know where I've been on Sunday during Ernests match. I mean I was there, but I don't remember a single point from it. I just remember that somewhere in the middle of it we realised it would be Kavcic who would play the last rubber for Slovenia and felt sorry and worried for Andis. But Andis braced himself and won bringing Latvia back into the 1st group. :rocker2:

Oh yeah, and the weather was so fine there that I got tanned while we were walking before the matches each day.

On Friday and on Sunday there were just two different Andises on court. It looked like Friday Andis didn’t wake up yet. “Labrit Andi!” (“Good morning, Andis!”), - one of the spectators shouted during the changeover, and unfortunately he was right. It wasn't great performance. The stands showed Andis almost no support so when he arrived on the team bench after the press conference, he looked like a beaten dog :awww: you know such a feeling, when you want to pat such a poor pet but afraid if it is going to bite your hand. :bolt:

Sunday Andis was completely different. To be honest, I was worried how he was going to deal with the pressure of the decisive match. But Andis was almost perfect. Of course, he was nervous, he made errors but he managed to put himself under control and won such the important point, he brought the victory :rocker2: The other guys supported him widely, as well as the stands, and that also helped, no doubt.

:tape: And we were so happy when Latvia won, that I managed to leave my camera on the stands! :tape: :tape: thanks god I found out it pretty soon, and we quickly came back.. :o

There was the best ever little kid sitting on the seat next to us. That girl was so adorable and cute. During the every changeover she came to us and asked very politely if we could lend her a pen, so she’d be able to collect autographs. So now I’m the happy owner of The Pen, which was in the hands of Ernie, Andis, Arturs Kazijevs and all the team Slovenia
Actually I was pretty surprised how many people, mostly kids, of course, asked to sign Davis Cup booklets and notebooks, not only Latvians, but Slovenians as well. I even felt a bit sorry for team Moldova: during the tie in March nobody was interested in autographs! :spit:

I suppose we found out on the day before Davis Cup that Ernests had a new coach and who! Gumy, the ex-coach of Marat! Such a nice person he is..

Not much words to be said about Ernests.
I am still shocked how he changed since I saw him last playing live (St.-Petersburg 2007, awww, good old times) and even more shocked how he looked and acted like Marat. :bolt:

The girls working with the scoreboard were just hilarious. It went down on Friday several times. Moreover, it looked like one of the girls, who was operating it, didn’t follow the match at all but was somewhere else in her dreams. So the scores went crazy.. :silly:

*
The doubles game was pretty tense. Ernests and Denis managed to save 3 match points in the last set but unfortunately it was game, set, match for Slovenia. During that match Deniss tried to kill Ernie smashing a ball into him and they lost a point because of that episode. :awww:

Deivids shouted that loud “Deniska, we love you! Denis, you are the best!” :yeah:  Actually team Latvia has two great cheer-leaders with very loud voices: Deivids and Karlis.

Oh, and it was Saturday, when they played “Dar ko var dar ko var Latvijai ir jāuzvar” during almost every changeover! The most addictive ever song! :music:

*
And Jurmala was just beautiful, as always, especially one certain sunset on the sea coast.. :inlove:

I can't help but picturing Andis biting off your hand when you try to pat him...

Probably one of us should have held it in the end instead of having it between the seats. :tape: :)

"А можно ещё ручку, пожалуйста?" - she was very sweet.
And Denis is the only one whose hands didn't hold that pen. :awww:

We looked for him so intensively during the first match that we didn't notice how the Latvian bench became less empty.

Oh yeah, it was in the very beginning... And then soon one of Slovenians hit Ernie with the ball as well.

 it happened accidentely and Ernests realized that, of course.. so they just kept on playing :)

Thank you for the report! But can you describe how Ernests have changed?

Well, there is "more post by Nadie" button in my profile.. I mentioned that two or even three times here on the board and I really just don't want to start the discussion once again. :tape: :wavey:

so when are we going to hockey to support Dinamo Riga and to shout it?That's one of the things I want to do when I go back to Riga. seriously. You are no (true or pretending) Latvian if you dont support Dinamo Riga, apparently... ;)
:haha: Oh dear, was that Latvian water involved?
Why do you always think I am such a *bad* girl? And, however, I DO hold my booze well.:p

Pff, i dont think I can add much to what you already said. There are things about Ernests on which I dont see much improvement, things that I dont really appreciate (like, showing the finger), things that always get me excited (when he fights until the end and takes the match - which is something I saw him doing just when he plays for his country, if Im not wrong).
I got again that impression I had in Montecatini last year, that he acts so differently when he is amongst his friends and teammates from when he is "alone" at a tournament.
I need to say Andis was a bit mistreated on day 1, because almost no one was actively supporting him. The crowd was silent at the beginning and got louder just for Ernests. His teammates could have been on their beloved bench, encouraging Andis, but it was not exactly like that. So, I was really happy for Andis, when he played so good and won on Sunday. He was great, and I am proud I was there cheering for him.

I might write a longer report next days, if I have some free time, but now things are becoming a bit chaotic to me. So i can not promise you anything.:) Im sure you and Nadia and Erica and Evita already said all the important things!

I agree he does act different with friends then alone. He seems more comfortable with friends so he acts more outgoing and wild compared to by himself.

Thanks for your report Cami:yeah: I still feel sorry for Andis that he didn't get the same support, after all it was he who clinched the tie,I'm still so happy for them all,its a great achievement:woohoo:
