My prediction: Pete will retire now

he has accomplished his 14th Slam...and made history...

he trashed Agassi in the process -- his favorite victim...

his wife is preggers...

he has silenced his critics...

this is his best chance since Wimby 2000 to pull a Steffi and quit while he was ahead. he's too smart to miss this opportunity....

you heard it here first.

No way is he going to quit now. He's finally proven he can win after two years of whining about it. I think this only further deludes him.

Not that I wouldn't be absolutely ecstatic if he quit tomorrow . . .

TC, I just wish that your prediction will come true.

he will after Wimbledon 2003

he said there is no way he wants to go out on Court 2 at Wimbledon.

Now as US Open Champ they will have to stick him on a main court.

i agree with Hackie, no chance in hell Pete will retire now. he's not going out at Wimby with a 2nd round loss to a Lucky Loser. he'll make his return to the All England Club in 2003, to make one final run on the grass. and he's not passing up defending his USO crown.

Pete has already said he will play a full schedule in 2003.

i don't care what he says. Pete doesn't always say what he feels -- he emits words for the media to pick up on. like when he praises anyone who beats him -- you really think he means that? i don't care what he says about not retiring now. he will. he knows that this is his best chance to quit while he's ahead. i know his ego is huge but he's not stupid. he will retire and go raise his Hollywood brat with the Chewing Gum Chick. you heard it here first.

That would be a real nice story, TC! :) But the way he lost at Wimbledon this year has spurred him on! And Pete Sampras will never let his last match at Wimbledon be a second round disaster to George Bastl, who promptly lost 6-2 6-2 6-2 in his next match!

Pete Sampras will win his 8th Wimbledon title next year! :D

And couldn't Tony Trabert have taken a few seconds and asked Sampras if he was going to retire after this monumental and unexpected grand slam title? The interviews were awful!

His big ego is the main reason why I think he wont retire now.
Wimbledon is his home and he wont leave it with that crash to Bastl on court 2.
Thats my opinion.

why would he risk tarnishing his record a second time? are you guys saying that he learnt nothing from his drought of the past two years?

You got it, tennischick. Steffi has less of an ego than Pete (never cared for numbers, never really sought to stamp the history books) and still she liked going out on Centre court. Becker, Navratilova, Evert...I think it's something in the water champs drink.

I think he will retire after he makes one last good showing at Wimbledon. If i was him, i wouldnt go out with a Round 2 loss at Wimbledon. Also, he still loves playing, and his fans love watching him, so theres no hurry to retire just yet.

There are clearly two ways of looking to this.

1. He is on top of it again, and it would be a great finish to the story.
2. He left his home (Wimb) with a bad performance and he has motivation to go there on Center Court again and erase that last bad image.

He has this double vision himself. Check his post title interview. ;)

Sampras has hinted that after such a high it might be nice to stop, but says he'll wait a couple of months before making a decision.
We shall have to wait and see whether or not he gets into the Masters Final in Shanghai on a WC as a Slam winner. Maybe that will decide him.
Then again his energy might be renewed after a week or 2 and as other people have said he'll try to go out at Wimbledon on his favourite Centre Court in the 2nd week rather than Court 2 in a 2nd rd encounter.

I hope he sticks around and loses in the second week of Wimbledon to the eventual champ on center court or something..

Of course if he doesn't win it ;)

Something like that would be quite fitting. He is arguabley the best grass court player of all time.
