The crazy and fun loving Slovene deserves his own thread. He has been a part of the Slovenian DC squad with Gregorc and his good friend Zemlja.

Thanks to Milan for this pics.

Let's go Blaz! I know nothing about him, which is to be honest why I'm a fan. I want him to succeed so I can see how he plays.

By the way, how do you pronounce Blaz?

07-06-2009, 02:52 AM
Enjoyed the nice photos. :yeah:

By the way, how do you pronounce Blaz?

His name is Bla× (written in Slovene).

If I'm not mistaken, '×' is pronounced as the 's' in "treasure". ;)

Blaz lost the final of Rijeka to Lorenzi, but he has reached a career high of #140 and he won't have much to defend for the rest of the year.

07-06-2009, 02:53 PM
Get in, Blaž!

He hopes he'll get a WC for Umag (tourney director said he'll do what he can for that to happen). He also hopes to get direct entry to the AO next year.

Blaz, Gregorc and Zemlja are playing in the Group II, Europe/Africa Davis Cup.

They are at home against Lithuania and are playing on clay.

On paper it seems very winnable for Slovenia.

Kavcic def. Sabeckis 6-2 6-3 6-1 :yeah:
2-0 for Slovenia. Very easy wins for both singles.

Kavčič is now no. 139 (Slovenian best position in history)! :yeah:
And Slovenia beat Lithuania 5-0 (lost only one set)! Now will Slovenia play against Latvia.

Blaz has been given a wildcard for Umag.

I just noticed that. Good work by his agent, when the wild card could have been easily given to a Croatian. Let's hope he gets a kind draw.

Watched the match on Slovene sports channel. Up until 3-3, first set he managed to stay in contact with Andreev, mostly due to UEs by the Russian, then it all went downhill. It was expected though, afer seeing first 6 games that it was all in Andreev's hands. Blaz's serve is improving, but it's still bad in comparisson to other top 100 players. One of his second serves barely landed in the court, let alone service box. Too many DFs as well.

Blaz also can't rely on hitting winners, except for some great drop shots, but those alone can't win him many matches. The biggest problem are very short backhands(mostly), landing before the lines of service boxes and therefore rather suitable for his opponent to dictate and eventually win the points.

Overall, he's fast with nice defensive game, has a nice touch at net and great dropshots. Rather weak serve and lack of power on his groundstrokes are in need of improvement.

Action Jackson
05-04-2010, 03:15 PM
Too passive and a weak serve, he will have to improve them to make it further.

He has played too much already this season.

In a short interview in a Slovenian weekly he said he's a fan of Nadal. :(

Not surprising, he's a clay court guy, most clay court players would be fond of Rafa and his achievements and ability to translate his game on other surfaces as well. It's actually a positive for Blaz to look up to Rafa and try to emulate him in some ways.

Filo V.
05-08-2010, 02:00 AM
Blaz's results have been up and down this season, with one SF and two QF challenger results, qualifying for the Australian Open, but also having several first and second round losses, including this week to Andreev 3-6 2-6. His ranking is about to take a really huge hit in the wrong direction with his inconsistent results. Hopefully he can find a way to find his form and start winning on a consistent level.

He is playing the Zagreb challenger next week, hopefully he has a good result, good luck Blaz!

Filo V.
05-09-2010, 02:23 AM
Here is the draw for the challenger in Zagreb starting this upcoming week:

Blaz plays Andre Begemann in the first round, with Ebden/Minar as the potential second round match-up. Begemann is a decent player and had very good results at the end of the year on clay so if Blaz doesn't start to play better, he could lose R1. The opportunity for a SF is there if he picks up his form.

Good luck in Croatia, Blaz!

Filo V.
05-10-2010, 03:40 AM
Blaz is the second match on the center court today vs. Begemann. Hopefully he gets the victory, as one is much needed for him. If he plays well he should defeat Begemann, hopefully he can find his form from last year and start performing to the level he and we know he can play.

Filo V.
05-11-2010, 12:40 AM
Blaz won 6-2 6-1 today vs. Begemann, he was toying with the German throughout the match. His counterpunching game was the perfect match up vs. the attacking style of play of Begemann. He awaits his next opponent of Ebden/Minar in R2 now.

05-27-2010, 03:24 PM
I like the match so far - some great points there, but Blaz seriously NEEDS TO WORK on that serve. It's on the WTA level at best

05-27-2010, 03:31 PM
Yeah, I agree. Breaks are holds in this match. That serve needs to be the number 1 priority, as he should realize it's not up to snuff with even most claycourters. However, Kavcic has played well so far, and I like his spirit, always into the match.

Action Jackson
05-27-2010, 03:33 PM
He knows his serve is shit and that is what is holding him back. Then he misses and gets anxious, which puts him behind in the games.

Striking the ball quite well and the conditions are helping, not sure if Eschauer will be able to help him with this.

I know this is a little bit off topic but yesterday I had honor to meet Bla× Kavčič. And I have to say if I was his fan before, right now I'm his number 1 fan. We actually meet because of my study. I study journalism and had to made an interview. And because I'm fan of tennis of course I tried to contact him. I thought he would say that he wouldn't have time or something but he answered to my message after 3 hours and gave me even his phone number to contact him later. Of course I did and we texted like we are friends. I really didn't expect he is so down to earth, so friendly, so talktive etc. I really can say only good things about him. He even wanted to paid drink but I somehow conviced him not to do this because after all he helped me a lot even though he didn't had to. I also contact one of Slovenian tennis sites and they will (maybe) publish this interview. :bounce: He is really really cool person. :D

I don't know why I actually write this but it was really so exciting to meet him. :) He even said if I would ever need anything similar just to call him. Amazing person he is! :yeah:

I'm sorry I had to share this here. :p

Marcos Daniel (BRA) - Ivan Dodig (CRO)
Denis Gremelmayr (GER) - Robert Kendrick (USA)
Blaz Kavcic (SLO) - [5] Jeremy Chardy (FRA)

I still can't believe how much his game on hard courts has improved over the last couple of months. His (first)serve can even be a weapon at times, when he's not too negative on court. A nice chance for Kavcic to play against Tipsarevic, who's a good friend of his, in the second round.

One of the most hilarious things about Kavcic is his H2H record against Grega Zemlja, lol. 0-6.
I always thought Zemlja has a better game to make it into the top 100, but the roles have reversed, it seems.

Disappointing loss for Bla× against Starace. It was always going to be tough, but tactically it wasn't a good performance. Started fairly well, then when Starace improved in the 2nd set, Kavčič got too passive, wasn't hitting the ball at all.

Starace served better and was controlling the points as Bla× was moving further back into the court, then Starace was able to use excellent dropshots. Good that Kavčič was able to get one of the breaks back in the 4th, even then he had a bp chance get it back on serve, but it was saved by a good serve.

07-12-2011, 04:34 PM
2 wins For Blaz today. Win over Benneteau 75 in the third and doubles(with Pere Riba) win over Cermak/Polasek 64 63.

He is only temporary, but Voinea was great for him. It was amicable at least. There are some good coaches around, just need to be patient.

08-12-2011, 10:26 AM
He was not patient enough. His new coach for the test period of 5 straight weeks is Slovenia's Davis Cup captain Blaz Trupej. Trupej has coached a plethora of players, men and women, with not much success. The only player he has "brought" to the top 100 was WTA's Maja Matevzic (CH of 38), the rest failed badly.

Frankly, if he had kept Voinea for just those 12 weeks per year it would've still been better than hiring Trupej.

Action Jackson
08-12-2011, 11:03 AM
Trupej is shit. I actually think David Lenar should be DC captain.

Boreas, totally agree with you about Voinea. I mean I can see Blaž being between 50-75, too bad he doesn't have Zemlja's talent. Lost the best coach for him.

08-12-2011, 01:11 PM
I think Trupek is excellent choice  he did wonders for Maja Matevzic who was third wheel back in the days when Slovenia was winning all junior titels with Srebotnik, Pisnik and Hergold ... she was hanging at around 300 before Blaz took over and made her into top50 player (at some point even better than Pisnik or Srebotnik)

08-12-2011, 04:23 PM
Trupej also coached a bunch of other players since Matevzic's retirement and achieved nothing. Most of the players even regressed.(most notably Zec-Peskiric:lol:)

AJ - you think Zemlja's more talented? He's got more power on serve and groundstrokes, but other than that they're pretty even talent-wise. Yet, I'd have never predicted Kavcic to have a better ranking and more success on the tour.

I don't rate Trupej from what I saw, if he proves me wrong then good. I don't think he's any better than Lenar.

Yes, I think Grega has more natural ability than Blaz, but as much as I like Grega he's a bit soft mentally. He does have some Giraldo like footwork, if Blaz had some of Grega's talent he'd be top 50. Then again if Zemljak had Blaz's work ethic and desire, then he'd be top 100.

Very disappointing to lose when the opportunity for a deep run was very available with the draw he had. Now he'll have a few days of rest and hopefully he does better in these upcoming Moroccan challengers. Has he bought a hacienda there already? It's like he knows where he belongs to.

I can't take Kavcic seriously anymore. OK, winning a few rounds at these weak tournaments is going to ensure a MD spot at the AO, but playing these endless clay events in SA time and time again is surely not gonna help him on the long run. How does he expect to improve his game, his serve, his game outside of clay etc., if all he needs to do to stay in the top 100 is beating a couple of random Sousas and Silvas who're already overranked as it is.

How does he expect to improve his game, his serve, his game outside of clay etc., if all he needs to do to stay in the top 100 is beating a couple of random Sousas and Silvas who're already overranked as it is.

Practical reasons to play there why play indoors coming off an injury where he is going to struggle to win consecutive matches and not make the AO direct is what he should be doing.

You make it like he has never won a match on hardcourts as for his serve that is what training for and the off tournament weeks to really work on that, plus the preseason.

Ljubo trolling Blaz getting done for speeding was funny.

Well done police... It is easy to get me at 8.00am when I am still to blind to see how fast I am driving...:))

How can you go too fast with that car?!? :-). (missed writing before)

It was downhill Ljubo...;)

Aaahhh. Then I understand. Can't see it on the photo but I trust you :-)

Lost in the semis to Zeballos 5-7 6-3 6-2 in Sao Leopoldo. Zeballos was pretty aggressive and Blaz finally got some matches in though he had an injury timeout on his back at 0-1* in the 3rd set.

Off to Marbella and then there'll be history with 3 Slovenes into the Aus Open directly. Trupej really hasn't done anything to improve Blaz since they've been together.

Blaž and Aljaž Bedene on a Slovenian show talking about 3 men in the top 100 for Slovenia. Since I speak crap Slovenian, translation of the good parts would be fantastic. l

Zemlja spoke about his good work with the trainers needs to keep working hard.

Blaz talking about the issues he has had with his back preparing to go to Chennai, Melbourne. Play a mix of Challengers and ATP, but most importantly wants to get over the injuries.

Bedene came back too soon from the appendicitis surgery, didn't have enough time for fitness preparation, plus having some issues with the wrist as well.

It's good that Blaz got back into the top100 and qualified for AO. Hopefully he can build on that in the new year.

Probably the funniest thing in that video comes right at the start.

"Anze Baselj
Hairstyle done by Mic Styling" :haha:

I'll watch that video once I have some time and translate the more important parts.

I watched that, the interview itself was a bit of a bore so nothing new to say.

- talked about having to play tournaments in obscure places because losses on the ATP level can damage your confidence and he needs to boost himself up by winning weaker tournaments(talked about having to wash himself with a bucket in Uzbekistan)
- said that he won most of the matches against Zemlja in the U-14 category but started losing once they got to the professional level (the host avoided mocking them for never having beaten Zemlja in their matches)
- said that they used to make fun of Zemlja in juniors because he hated getting up in the morning and he kept coming to early matches sleepy and grumpy.
- Kavcic and Zemlja are playing 2 exhibitions in Slovenia these days.
- believes he's had luck picking the right coaches
- travelling to Australia with him will be Petra who won the ballot of one of Blaz's sponsors.

- talked about his twin brother Andraz who retired this year, but will be travelling with Aljaz as his sparing partner. They used to be very close game wise but Andraz never broke out.
- said about the traumatic experience in Brazil when there was an explosion in their hotel and he could've died had he not been outside.

They both also mentioned that they're starting the season in Chennai. The rest was pretty much what you've already mentioned.
