He's still considered Anglo, though (some people think Iranians are Arab).

Yes Tryphon he did. That's why Agassi was so pleased to play & win the gold for the US in Atlanta

I always thought his name sounded Italian. I thought he looked it too, so i assumed he was Italian. Not that i care what his origins are, as long as he keeps entertaining me with great tennis!

Funny you brought this up. My Dad was discussing this with me during the final last nite and I didn't know and he said that his dad was Persian (but I can tell him now that he is actually Armenian/Iranian)

The difference between Armenian and Iranian are just like France and Australia. They are people from 2 seperate countries.

Where are people who are Armenian from?

I assumed it was people from different regions, I'm not a total tool :p

I was only asking cause I was not aware where those who were Armenian were from....

well usually Armenian people are from Armenia, a contry near Russia, I'm half Armenian btw thats why I care ;) Don't speak the language and dont look very Armenian though

A long long time ago Armenia was much bigger than it now is but then a part of it was conquered by Persia and another part by Turkey. And since that 100 thousands Armenians lived over Persia and Andre's ancestors are one of these.
Mikaelian is Armenian too

irma it was.

Andre's dad (Mike Agassian) was Armenian by descent but was born in Iran and lived there so he had to compete for Iran.

GoLleyt,

Iranians ARE Persian.

Before the country was Iran, it was Persia for a long, long, long time.

BTW, Cher is half Armenian (explaining her dark features, though people think erroneously that she's half-Native American).

I think you meant to adress that to Lleyton's_Chick, not Go Lleyt

Thanks for answering me everyone :) I didn't know Armenia was a country - I had a feeling that was what the place was called, but I didnt want to be ignorant so I prefered to ask.

Nina is Right, The Armenian nation is big and her sons they lives not only in the current republic of Armenia, but also in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestina, Syria, etc, etc. and also you can find Armenians immigrants in almost whole the world, even in my country there is a small but important, Armenian colony.

btw they have their own language, their own alphabet and their own religion "Armenian Catholics".
so there is nothing strange in Andre Agassi, having his parents ethnically Armenians but born in Iran.

But Andre is "gringo" end of the debate ;)

Does gringo mean American? Like those people from the south call the Americans Yankees.

If it's a really bad word, you don't need to explain to much lol. I just wondered if it was like calling someone Yankee.
