At least Roger got up early in the 4th. I guess the only good thing is Roger's getting in more match play.

Folks on rf.com think the slip in the 3rd set affected Roger's movement. I think it's more Roger losing concentration and not expecting PK to really up his level.

I think it did as well. He was late to the BH side in at least 10 different rallies early in the 3rd set and he's never late to the BH side. He got himself sorted out and started hitting through the BH some more in the 4th set.

Oh thank goodness :o

For a 6-1 scoreline the last set was nervewracking as well. Some awesome shots from both sides, quite an entertaining match actually, would have been more so if I wasn't groaning at the third set proceedings. Especially some of the tiebreak misses. But through to the 4th round! :D Kudos to Kohlschreiber for taking a set, but Roger, please not to be losing concentration again :p

Just one of those short compilations that they do on tv...the slipping one seems to be a Wimbledon specialty or something, at the end of every Wimby tournament there's a couple of minutes worth of slips that they set to music  :o It must be the same one xohxmyx is referring to up there. Karlovic's game is so boring, it's all about the serve, apart from that, he doesn't have great shots.

If Roger were to get through to play Ivo in the QF, then that wouldn't be very easy at all.

R Federer - 26 June 2009
Friday, 26 June 2009

Q. What is the verdict on that today?
ROGER FEDERER: I thought it was a good match. I thought it was my best match of the tournament so far. I thought the rhythm was very high. We played a lot of tough points. I really thought, you know, from my side it was an excellent match.

Of course, you know, you also need the opponent to come up also with the goods to make it an exciting match, and I thought it was. Sure, I would have loved to win in straight, but he came back strong.

Maybe my serve let go just a little bit. But he started to pick side a lot as well and, you know, took the right decisions at the right time and deserved the third set in the end.

I was happy how I reacted. Thought I didn't panic. Was an excellent match in the end.

Q. Good for you terms of the tournament to have had more of a test?

ROGER FEDERER: Sure. I mean, why not? I mean, I thought I already played very well the first two matches. It doesn't really bother me how I come through. At the end of the day, it's important to come through and feel good when I walk off the court.

Q. Where were you and what were your immediate thoughts when you heard the news that Michael Jackson had died?

ROGER FEDERER: I was at the house late last night. Obviously, you know, I love his music. It wasn't clear, you know, what had happened, you know. So I waited for sort of to see what's gonna happen and the confirmation.

Sure, a very sad moment I think in the music world. You know, he touched many people. Same for me. But I'll obviously still listen to his music for many more years to come.

Q. What do you consider the aspect that you appreciate the most of his performances?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I remember, I don't know, back maybe in '88 or '89, he came to Basel. I was outside of the stadium, because there was such excitement that he would come. I was still very young. I think I went there with my sister, and we just listened from the outside, you know.

Yeah, always listened to his music. And, yeah, it's sad. You know, it really is.

Q. A lot of people are inevitably already speculating, looking at the draw, a possible Federer/Murray final. I presume you feel that's fairly premature at this stage, would you?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I think so. Yes.

Q. In a few weeks, Nelson Mandela is going to be honored in our country. Could you comment about your thoughts on him and your meeting him?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, unfortunately I've never met Nelson Mandela. Yeah, I don't know if I'm sad about it, but that's still definitely one of the dreams for me, you know, to have maybe a ‑‑ maybe getting to meet him.

But the thing is, it's hard to go down to Australia [sic] right now with the schedule being so full. But if I would go, I mean, of course I would try. Of course, only if he would like to.

You know, he's had an incredible life and he's been very inspirational to many people. He's definitely, you know, one of the peoples I would love to meet in my life.

Q. What do you think his legacy is?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I don't know. I mean, look, I mean, he's much older than I am, so I only know him sort of the end, you know, of his life. You know, it's the beginning of mine.

But I always looked up to him as a great man and very inspirational, that's for sure.

Q. Before playing the Wimbledon final, you will replay the Roland Garros final next round. What is your feel being playing Soderling once more? Can he be more dangerous on grass than clay?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, if you asked me before Paris, I would say he's definitely more dangerous on grass than on clay, but then you saw all those great matches he played in Paris and you're worried, too.

So he's definitely proven his point that he's a good all‑around player. I haven't actually thought about the match at all yet, you know. Too occupied with different things right now.

But I think it's going to be interesting to see, you know, how he's going to enter that match after coping with such a long tournament in Paris and see how fresh he still is. But I've played him here in the past, and I've played him on grass a few times now.

I've had success against him, but I know the danger because he hits extremely hard. Yeah, definitely got to be ready for that match.

Q. Your wife is pregnant obviously. Would you be happy if she gave birth in England? Would you be happy to have a son or daughter born in England?

ROGER FEDERER: I'm happy if the baby's healthy. That's most important right now.

Q. You broke Agassi's record today. 47th win.

ROGER FEDERER: Here?

Q. Yes.

ROGER FEDERER: Okay.

Q. Does that mean anything at all?

ROGER FEDERER: I didn't know about it.

Q. Just another record?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, it's not one I was dreaming about as a boy really (smiling). But it's nice to get. You know, I guess it's ‑‑ if you probably asked him, he probably wouldn't even know himself. So let's leave it at that.

Q. Fabrice Santoro has played his last singles match here. Are there any shots in his armory that you would have liked to have had or you'd like to acquire? It seemed when you played him you actually had quite a lot of fun. What was it like playing against him?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, yeah, he's definitely one of the players I like to watch most. I mean, he's so different to the rest. You know, was happy enough to play him a few times, and we've always had good matches. You know, he also beat me twice.

I think he's a great test for youngsters coming up, because it doesn't matter how great you are, he'll find a weakness in your game. Even though maybe there's not many there, he'll still make it really difficult for you to play well and to beat him.

That's the beauty of tennis. I think everybody has a chance. Doesn't matter if you're tall or, you know, smaller, it doesn't matter. And it's sad he's going out of the game, but he's had an incredible sort of 20 years of his tennis life.

I get along very well with him, so it's obviously sad seeing him going out of Wimbledon. But he's still got some tournaments left. Who knows, maybe we'll play each other down the road.

Q. That Santoro forehand, do you ever practice that?

ROGER FEDERER: I think all the players did it already once, but I can actually do it not bad. But he reads the game very well and he's got incredible touch. Many players, I think, would love to have that.

Q. Because of the unique day off here on Sunday, is there more of a sense here than anywhere when you get to the second Monday it's almost the start of a new tournament?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I guess a little bit because I think it's the only Grand Slam that both sections of the draw play the same day. I think Monday, Wednesday and Friday, whereas maybe the other Grand Slams it's still overlapping. So I think, yeah, it seems like it's, you know, down to business in the second week.

I mean, sure, it's nice to start off, you know, with the second week. But this is where it gets really interesting for me, you know, as a top player.

Q. When you enter a match against Soderling with such a lopsided record in the past between the two of you, does that enter your mind at all either as a confidence boost, thinking he never has beaten you on any surface anywhere, or is there part of you that thinks maybe at some point he's got to win against me?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, there's a bit of both. I mean, obviously you always figure there's only so many times you beat a player. But then at the same time, you get ready for every match, you know, in the best possible way.

I try not to underestimate because I respect all the players in a big way. And he's definitely one of those guys you come out and you might play well, but it still isn't enough, you know.

It's like today, for instance. Kohlschreiber, he hung in there even though I was playing great. That's what I expect with Soderling, as well. He's got a huge game. Now he's also got the taste of beating the top players. That only makes him more dangerous.

But I still think most important is, or what stands out to me, is that I've beat him so many times that it gives me an incredible amount of confidence, knowing that if I do play my game well, I should be fine.

But you never know. That's why I have to be very careful.

Well done. Lost a set in a TB, but moved on.

Next up Soderling and then maybe Karlovic. Tsonga down.

Personally, I'd rather he face Tsonga then Karlovic, and I really don't get why people were complaining about Tsonga. Fed's draw would have been a nightmare for Nadal, but this is federer.

Also, kudos to Federer for 47 wins on Grass here at Wimbledon. Never been done by anybody, including Connors, which is absolutely amazing. I'll have to get that stat up on the chart, most wins of any one grand slam. I had no idea he was so close to it already!

Hey guys :wavey:
Happy Roger won, and I'm totally relaxed about the meeting with Soderling.
What about you?

I actually think it is a good omen. I am starting to see a parallel between this year's RG+Wimbledon and the same time in 1996.

In '96 leading up to RG Thomas Muster was unstoppable on clay having won MC, Barcelona and Rome. In RG Michael Stich came out of nowhere having recovered from an injured ankle and beat Muster in 4 sets in the 4th round. Stich went on to make the final losing to Kafelnikov in straight sets.

This year, Nadal is cast in Muster's role and Soderling is cast in Stich's.

Now, at Wimbledon, Stich ran into Krajicek in round 4 who beat him in straight sets and went on to win the event.

Therefore, Roger playing the man who beat Nadal in round 4 of the French Open and the man he beat in the RG final in the 4th round of Wimbledon is a good sign :D

I think I'd rather Roger faced Verdasco than Karlovic, not that I think Roger couldn't beat Karlovic, obviously he can & has done before but with that crazy serve Karlovic has it could get very dodgy. Still it would be an awesome practice/test of Roger's returns if he faced Karlovic. But yeah I'd rather see Verdsaco there personally.

Oh and silly me, I only just realised today how easy Murray's draw is compared to Roger's, I mean seriously as a Brit I'd be severely disappointed if Murray doesn't make the final at the absolute very least. That said I hope Roger gets through & then beats him in the final

Edit: Just realised I got waaaay ahead of myself & forgot entirely of the Soderling match! Hopefully Roger doesn't make the same mistake of thinking about whether he could face Karlovic or not

Shhhh, don't say that! It'll just make me nervous, considering the "winning streak has to stop SOMETIME, right?" thing always invades my mind when he plays Roddick one of his pigeons. :tape:

I haven't really seen Yokerling play, but he played against Almagro, right? I dunno their H2H (or if they've played each other at all), but I wouldn't be surprised if Söderling was fairly confident against Almagro (since he's known to be a claycourter, not a grasscourter), allowing him to serve more freely.

Or not. I don't know, really. :p

Maybe he just had one of those days when the serve was really clicking? His serve was crazy during RG as well, from what I can remember. But against Fed... :D so, yes, I'm going to remain optimistic, since Söderling himself said that Fed doesn't allow him to play his game. I don't think he said that to kiss Fed's ass, so... :p

I don't know...I'm anxious about his whole draw (not even specific matches, the whole draw, compared to Murray's it's ridiculously hard, ridiculously.) But even with this anxiousness I still have this feeling he's going to win the whole thing. I can see him winning all his tough matches (may not be easy, may be more 5 setters down the line but it's doable). I am kind of hoping Murray goes out but then I kind of hope he doesn't & that Roger has a chance to meet him in a GS & show him that best of 3 is nowhere near the same as best of 5.

That said, his draw is ridiculous.

Oh and for Soderling himself, I think it's good that Roger had to face him in Paris & knows he is on top form so he won't be lazy about the match or expect a relatively easy match or something. He'll know vaguely what to expect & so will go in prepared & I think he'll be going out there all cylinders firing so to speak.

Agree 100% with everything you said :yeah:

As anxious as I am I also have this feeling Roger will come out on top, which will make this victory all the more sweet!

We need to just take it one match at a time and not worry about Karlovic, Djokovic Murray etc until the time comes. I am sure that is exactly the way Roger is approaching the situation and so he should.

It would be really nice to have Dudi Sela as a 4th round opponent and then JCF or Andreev as a QF opponent. :) This is why I said it was a cakewalk for Djokovic and Murray to the SF's--not only were their probable paths pretty routine, but even if you took the 'worst case scenario' for each them, the draw still didn't look all that difficult.

Federer played conservatively off of the ground, but that was the plan--he wasn't going to take chances, miss, and get down a break against this guy. Soderling was broken only twice in 4 matches at Wimbledon.

It's too bad Soderling had Federer in the 4th round. I think he would have had a decent shot against just about everyone. Murray and Djoko would have been difficult to take down, but I would give him a chance against both.

06-29-2009, 05:39 PM
Hmm...one thing good is that Roger has played Ivo many times so knows what to expect, he's also beaten him many times (even when in his supposed "slump"). He also got a good practice of a kind against big serves with the match against Robin. He's also probably one of the best player's against Ivo's serve since he doesn't go to blast a return, he just makes sure it gets back in play & then obviously Ivo is not so good if his serve is returned.

Roger's serve itself will have to be top notch though for sure, make sure he doesn't get broken as it looks like Ivo may be able to go unbroken in this tournament (actually that's a point has anyone ever gone out of a tournament at least a few rounds in, in this case the QF, but never been broken?) But yeah I expect lots of excellent serving & lots of tiebreaks, hopefully Roger can take it in 3 but I expect a 4 or 5 setter & a tense one at that unfortunately.

Obey.my.dreamz

Wawa seems to be sending back puff balls in the 3rd and 4th set unlike what he did in the 1st set. Murray's 1st serve % has also made a big difference in helping Murray get back his confidence. Murray will win in 4.

A fifth would be a miracle. Don't dream on a Ferrero win in this case though, this will still be very unlikely.

What's funny is that if Roger wins there will still be people explaining that he had an easy draw

JediFed

BP number 11. 2-11.

Murray's not going to get far with a 50 percent first serve percentage.

Figure he's got about 10 minutes before they suspend the match.

The only way I see them suspending the match is if one of the players actually complains about something & is actually warranted in that complaint (not sure what they could complain about, the light is fine it seems). Or if it goes to like something ridiculous you know 12-12 or something then they may put a halt to it...maybe. But I kind of see it going til it ends to be honest.

Yeah I'd quite like to see him play his next match now, we all know what happened last time he had a mammoth 5 setter with lots of emotion spent at Wimbledon, he lost next round rather easily. Ok that was against Rafa but still this match has shown a lot of weaknesses to Murray on grass.

The inevitable 1st set TB'er will be key here--Ivo knows if he takes the 1st set breaker, he needs to win two more TB's in the next 3 sets to avoid having to break serve in the 5th. If Federer wins the 1st set (almost surely in a breaker), then I think he'll take the match in four.

MalwareDie

It's not pleasant to think about how Karlovic has won a greater percentage of first serve points with each passing round although I'm sure that Roger will return the serves better than Karlovic's recent opponents.

oneandonlyhsn
06-30-2009, 06:53 AM
I hate that Roger is playing Karlovic in the next round, Roger himself said he couldn't judge his form from his match against Soderling as it was basically a serving contest. Should be the same thing against Karlovic too. I would have preferred he played Nando who he could have played some groundies and get a fair assessment of his form.

OK so there's this discussion in the Murray/Wawa thread in GM about what counts as a winner in the stats. Is it aces or service winners that are included in the winner stat? Do some tournaments count things differently than others? Aces and service winners aren't subjective like forced/unforced errors are.

I think it is just aces. In Fed's match against Soderling, Fed had 34 winners. 23 of them were aces which means 11 were rally winners. That seems right to me.

fnuf7

I think Fed will get past Karlo but I am not sure what that will do to his rhythm in the SF.

Maybe through playing Ivo, he'll certainly have to have his own serve in fine working order & rhythm, so by the SF & F he'll have become the Federer version of Ivo, such supreme serving that he won't need rhythm on any other shot! :worship:

That said I too worry about this match, if his returns & his own serve aren't top notch then he could easily end up losing a set or two & then it really gets tight & nervous if things go to tiebreaks etc. It's just such an odd opponent, you can see Roger winning easily if he can break him & yet there is no way to tell if he can or will & in tiebreaks who knows what happens. One slip up could cost a set or more. And then if he gets through this he has to play either Haas (who I'm terrified of Roger playing again for some reason, don't care what anyone says :scared: ) or Djokovic (also not an entirely pleasing prospect...I'm hoping Djokivic comes through in a loooong, tough 5 setter & is exhausted/injured as per usual for an important GS match.)
