Who has surprised you so far ?? My vote so far goes to Tsonga. Playing well after Rome and Madrid.

Tsonga vs D-pot quarters ???

Who else has surprised you this week ??

Tsonga has surprised me also. Henman did reach the semis at the French open so Tsonga doing well at the French might not be that big of a surprise.

Henman apart from Chela in the quarters had a total dream draw.

Ouanna and the Toad.

Federer being in 3R is a hell of a suprise
He should have lost against Acasuso

Has to be Josselin Ouanna.

Ouanna ?! A surprise ?!
Has to be Christophe Rochus.

Safin, I didn't expect his defeat (especially in dramatic fashion) against Ouanna. Against Robredo and Lapentti ok, a little bit less against Monfils, but not against a 23-year old player who had only one decent ATP tournament :o

Good point. Reverse surprise.. Really didn't think about it that way.

Tipsarevic. he doesn't usually miss so many opportunities :awww:

Dini

Has to be Soderling.

And Tsonga to some extent too, but then again never be surprised when he wins in front of his homecrowd. He really does feed off their energy and delivers even when his game isn't clicking fully. ;)

Ouanna, the Toad and Acasuso (didn't expect him to play so well consistently, though the choke was predictable).

Cilic has quietly crushed his first three opponents. Having never been past R2, that's pretty good. He's had a relatively weak draw, but he's also gone 9-0 in sets and dropped only 21 games in those 9 sets, and only once has a set been closer 6-3/4.

Makes for an interesting match with Murray.

Machi Gonzalez and Leo Mayer.

Maxi Gonzalez, Soderfag, Hanescu, and Tipsarevic for failing to serve out the first set 714 times against Murray.

Soderling!

Hanescu, Soderling, Szavay and yes Tsonga considering how appauling he's played last 3 months.

Blarghman
05-30-2009, 01:32 AM
To me, Hanescu getting to R4 without dropping a set. He's been in close matches, but I've been impressed with him holding off both Youzhny and Simon. Not a really difficult draw, but still good performances from a guy I wasn't too familiar with before. Cilic has shown quite well also. :D

I thought Tsonga was primed for an early exit, with his lackluster showings of late, but he's also surprised :yeah:

MacTheKnife

Summary so far, looks like the top surprises are:

Soderling
Quanna
Hanescu

Honorable mentions: Tsonga, Rochus, and Cilic

Good thoughts..

The Toad.

Bizarre lack of choking, given his slam past.

Toad and Christophe Rochus.

Ouanna was NOT a surprise to me, to be honest.

Cilic is kind of outperforming my expectations, but I'd named him as a second-rank contender at the start of the season.

Del Potro might surprise people (and meet my expectations). Monfils might surprise all of his deep and tender lovers on GM.

Tsonga has definitely surprised me, and it's good to see the Count rediscovering his clay talent.

Miura is your signature a conspiracy theory about trolls or just a commentary on certain MTF names?

The answer you're looking for is: Soderling. First time past the 3rd round.

haas, monfils, roddick (easy draw so far, but in the past he managed to loose anyway)

rochus no surprise...winner of 2 nearly retired french players who never done well at their home slam

Maxi Gonzalez is a claycourter having a good run at the French after benefiting from a favourable draw. It's happened a zillion times before.

Haas is starting to piece together a surprising RG performance.

I was thinking the same thing earlier today when I was reading the underarm serve thread (Karlovic served underarm to Haas at the Stockholm Open). He has sneaked quietly through the draw.

A-rod moving into the surprise performance list. Second week for first time..

Dini
05-30-2009, 02:17 PM
Somehow I don't see Andy's performance as a surprise really, he has looked good all year and showed some amazing tennis in Madrid. He was predicted by many to reach the 2nd week, and so he has. ;)

I think Haas on the other hand has been a revelation this tourney though.

MacTheKnife
05-30-2009, 02:31 PM
Good point on Arod. Personally I still have Tsonga as my biggest surprise based on recent clay performance. But can't deny the majority on here so for with the likes of Soderling and Hanescu.

Haas too after solid performance today. Entire FO to me so far in way better than last years !!

FlameOn
05-30-2009, 02:49 PM
Definitely A-Rod.

All in all though, no matter how many surprising results there are at RG, the ending's probably gonna be the same.

James Blake losing to some unknown dude without taking a freaking set. That really surprised me. And Roddick winning a bunch of matches here. Good stuff andy

He's not talking bullshit all day to the idiot Justin Gimelstob and Doug Spreen, his useless fitness trainer. Another shock is he casually pushed volleys and still hesitatingly wants to stay in tennis tournaments. He says tennis is nothing compared to his gambling event and charity event (that Gimelstob advertised on camera).

Kohlschreiber, Soderling and Hanescu :worship: Kudos to them all.

Burrow
05-30-2009, 06:35 PM
Hanescu doesn't surprise me so much because he has been a quarter finalist in the past.

Kohlschreiber has it in him to play great tennis but i was more surprised by his menality in today's match, he was very focussed and didn't let anything phase him.

Negatives - Nadal, Djok, Muzza, Safin (in that order)

When somebody say Robredo is surprise quarterfinalist...he clearly is wrong, just look the guys hes beaten to get this quarterfinal spot, ranked 31 Philipp Kohlschreiber(seeded 29) is the best ranked player hes beaten so far.

Robredo far from a surprise, he has made the QFs 3 times.

06-02-2009, 07:53 PM
Gonzalez isn't a surprise either, an awful lot of people had him pencilled in for the semis when the draw came out. It will be a surprise if he reaches the final, though.

Monfils - didn't think he'd get this far considering how he came in. Only negative is Nadal losing to a punk like Robin.
