Good effort Pico, not like it is a humiliating thing being beaten by Tsonga on clay.

tsonga was not outstanding, he was unforced errors machine almost all the return games.Monaco is the most overrated claycourt player here in MTF.

Jo Tsonga? More like J' Stronga! :worship:

Clownga came up at the 2nd and latter part of the 4th, but fortunately dissapeared in the TB.

Great match, just focus on the returns Jo!

Aww, I'm sad for Pico  but Tsonga was fantastic and I think deserved it a little more.

I thought they were going to kiss at the net  ... :p

Entertaining match and Monaco was very gracious in defeat. He gave it his all, but Tsonga's firepower got him through and the French crowd were into the match, gave it some atmosphere.

Tsonga hasn't played that much on the clay, very different match for him next round.

What I saw of this was a nice match. Tsonga ripping that forehand and serving well....even a few nice volleys.

Very nice at the end. Awesome TB  A lot of fight and attitude, and brilliance at times too as well. Lovely MP, flamboyant- the way Jo likes it. :hearts:

And a lovely infectious smile from Jo at the end. :D

Disappointing result for Monaco, he had a good chance to make at least the Round of 16 here. Not sure if he will ever deliver a big performance in a Slam considering he's 25 already.

Tsonga was successful playing his hardcourt game on a claycourt, just shows how all surfaces are almost the same these days.

HeretiC
05-28-2009, 06:48 PM
I just wonder how many sets/matches it will take Pico to realize that those risky flatten shots with low bounce that he was hitting all day are pretty much only shots that Tsonga can deal with on clay?

Congrats to Tsonga, one of the nices guy on the tour and BIG applaud to Monaco for trying so hard and being such a class act at the end!!!!

scrappy match by monaco, tsonga hit some good shots but his serve saved him in the tie break. i think this match deserved a 5th set. also why were the odds stacked so much in mugaco's favour? it was an expected loss.

Nice win for Jo. It's good to see a French player feed off his home crowd's expectations rather than freeze up and die.

Who is Lou? (on Tsonga's shirt)

Don't know who Lou is. What I'd like to know is who was that cute brunette sitting next to Tsonga's coach. She sort of looks like a 20 year old Courtney Cox.

Maybe Tsonga isn't out of his depth on clay after all. And for all his claycourt prowess, Monaco continues to show the tour that he lacks weapons to counter with when he's being bullied around.

:D for clay legend Tsonga.

Obviously the US Open isn't a goal for the French players, so they can focus on their home tournament.

tsonga's style of tennis is disgusting in the modern game.

So mixing it up and not just hitting the cover off the ball is disgusting. If you enjoy that type of tennis then guys like Blake and Berdych should please you indeed.

Excellent game from Tsonga. I thought he would have more problems with Monaco. The fans really were into it.
If he can keep this level of play he could surprise.

Monaco should have won the 1st set. Missed so many BPs at 3-3 and 4-4. :help:

Then he was up 4-1 in the 4th set TB and also couldn't close it.

I'm sure that if I hadn't bet on him, Monaco would have won in 4. Just my luck. :o

I'd just like to say, that what made this match really interesting to watch was the battle of styles. Tsonga, with his crazy shotmaking and netgame, against monaco's consistent and crafty clay game. Different styles mixing really is what makes tennis.

Didn't expect that. I think Jo must have got his X-factor back, thanks to his home crowd. If he plays Del Potro, this should be good.
