Standard match. Didnt see it, but looks like Rafa played solid.

Next should be Hewitt.
Fun Match that will be!

Solid and no more. Still doesn't look completely like vintage RG Nadal that we are used to. Gabashvili played really well in the second set, but never was a threat to break.

forehand errors: :scared: or result of trying to change something in his game?

He didn't seem to have any problems with it. I still think his court movement is not at 100%. He still has points where he gets the unreachable, but also let a lot more go today, which is smart.

He did what he needed to do. Played much better than against Daniel.

Poor Gabashvili played a great match and only got 7 games... same old story.

Solid match by Rafa. Did his job. Gabashvili had nothing to hurt him with.
Not yet in 'vintage mode' but there was no need for that. Looks like Rafa has (finally) become a little bit wiser as he now seems to be able to save some energy at times, in stead of using it all up for every little point that comes along. :yeah:

Well done, congrats Rafke! :hatoff:

Nothing wrong with it, as expected.

I saw the last 6 games, he played ok, nothing special. But so far it's positive he's winning in straight sets, so he's getting the job done. He will raise the level of his game as the tournament advances.

Thanks, good to hear. I heard someone saying he didn't look completely fit but that was and a bit too much obviously.
Nice to see him through quickly and just before the rain.
Another day's rest and all should be fine I guess.

Not 100% convincing but solid throughout the match. He looked as if he was annoyed

Did enough to win, won it in straights, was rarely threatened throughout and despite his serving not being too impressive, Gabashvili only had a few chances to break.

Gaba saved SIX BPs at 3-3 in the second. Pretty impressive. As expected, he lost his next serving game to love.

Karin - I noticed Rafa going for more early winners then usual. Obviously a new tactic to save energy, especially in early rounds. I'm sure Uncle Toni told him - just do it like Roger!

You sure change your tune fast. Just yesterday you were declaring Rafa's career over. Get out of this site.

It was an entertaining match. Rafa hit a ridiculous passing shot, I can't remember what stage in the match- I think it was 3rd set- off a backhand volley from Gabashvili. Gabashvilli ran out of gas in the end, but that competitive 2nd set was quite something. ;)

Great Eurosport decision to show Ouanna-Safin instead of this useless shit

I remember in 2006 Eurosport was showing Nadal vs. Kim from Suzanne Lenglen (Kim won also 7 games) instead of tight battle of former champions Gaudio vs. Ferrero from Centre Court :retard: :banghead:

Does anyone get the feeling Rafa is using these early rounds to 'practice' his shots? That would explain the short balls and errors. He'd better get it together before he has to face Ferrer and Verdasco, if they should meet. And I don't think he will be 'practicing' against Hewitt next round...remember last two times they met on clay Hewitt gave him quite a scare at Hamburg ( big assist to Fed in that win) and RG 2006 or 2007.

I actually thought Rafa played MUCH better than his first round. Conserving energy, and hitting a variety of groundstrokes...working on his returns, etc. Gabashvilli played well in the second, and Rafa still pulled through rather easily.

Lleyton will be tough...Rafa in four sets...two very easily.

Now that I've seen some of the second set (on my DVR) I really do think Rafa is practicing strokes. Maybe I've never paid that much attention and didn't notice it, but I've seen him hitting some weird spins on his forehand 'up the line' from the deuce court to his right handed opponent's backhand. They had this nasty spin high INTO the body, not away out of the court like he's routinely used against Federer. I didn't see any wind, so I have to think it was intentionally hit this way. Having been satisfied with how it was going after second set, he ran away with the third.

To be honest I think Rafa and Federer both are anticipating a 4th consecutive meeting and are using every match to figure out how to beat each other.

I think Djokovic and Verdasco will have something to say about that "inevitable clash".

Exactly, while watching that game I was wondering whether that outcome would boost Gaba's chances or deflate them to never recover again. That was the turning point of the match, imo.

im seriously worried about rafas form, i know its early rounds but his confidence seems low and still makes errors at crucial points. he needs to find his best form in the next match onwards to send a message to his opponents. his concentration is poor at times and im wondering whether he still has the motivation to win this title.
