Very unlike Ljubo of late - got himself into the winning position and then barely won a point after that. Was at something like 25% first serve afterwards, and every second shot in the net.

Fantastic match, too bad I had to follow it from the SB...

Very nice to see Juanqui (still :hearts:) come through. Kept his cool just a little bit better when it really mattered and did not choke, whereas Legenda did.

Kudos & :hug:s to both these Legends of Old for putting up a great show (according to the Eurosport commentator which only showed the final couple of games :() :yeah:

Happy for Ferrero, but Ljubo's now lost a load of points, placing him at some lowly ranking which his year so far doesn't deserve.

Yup only caught the last 2 games on eurosport, and apparently it was a good match. Well done for coming through JCF, didn't think he'd beat Ljubicic

Was wondering beforehand if that might get to him at a key moment. He knows he can't play lots of low level tennis for points these days, only the big stuff interests him. If he drops down the rankings much, it's going to be very hard to reverse the slide, and retirement possibly beckons.

Vamos Juanqui!! :yeah:

Too bad I had to follow the match on SB. Looking at the stats, it seems it was a great match from both. :)
Good luck to Juan Carlos against Kohli in the second round! A repeat of their match in RG 2006 would be great. :)

Likely for him he has nothing at all to defend rest of the year...he missed most of last year with injury after Wimbledon...where he lost in the 1st round.

It was a very nice match. Ljubo was doing tactically right things. Right from the start JFC showed that he is extremely dangerous when he comes in the court on shorter balls, therefore Ljubicic was forced to take the initiative with heavy extremely deep balls. Just a little less pressure and Mosquito was all over him sucking his blood on both wings. Unfortunately for Ljubo in the fifth set after he went break up his 1st serve let him down, couldn't confirm the break and he ran out of fuel. It wasn't a choke, just tiredness caught him up.

Have to hand it to Ljubo, he can play with a lot of accuracy and patience when he's in this kind of form. JCF made his usual slow passive start but dominated the rallies from the 2nd set onwards. Then a silly lapse in concentration at the start of the 4th and he retreated back into his shell. In the end he just out-lasted Ljubo physically and mentally.

Tougher than it had to be but delighted that he's through. If he can survive one more round he can work his way into form and possibly surprise a few against Djoker. It's a very decent match-up for him.

Best match I've seen this far. I've developed a soft spot for Ljubicic as he's gotten old but can't ever complain for Ferrero advancing.

Happy for Ferrero, but Ljubo's now lost a load of points, placing him at some lowly ranking which his year so far doesn't deserve.

Only temporary mate. Ljubo has been right up there in performances this year (top 30 in an equivalent 'Race' ranking) so as long as he doesn't suffer a slump in form, his ranking will soon begin to reflect this.

Anyway, for me, the result was expected, but I only got to see the last few games, so I had no idea that Ivan was, in fact, up a break in the 5th...so really I guess he should have closed it out. :(

WD Ferrero on a fightback.
