Excellent variety, serve is look brilliant. Some errors, I think he will get them cleaned up.

Looks like he will make the Sf's atleast.

very impressive performance for a Fed's first rounder, Martin played a good match but he never had anything to hurt Fed, backhand was shaky earlier on but everything clicked once he put the first set in da bag, plenty of vintage JesusFed moments, and what a match point :worship:

Fed means business! :rocker2:

Yeah I don't think that's going to be so hard

Some great moments (serve was :worship:), but also some lapses in concentration by Feds, resulting in quite a few mishits and shanks.
If he manages to cut down on those In Absentia-moments I surely see him make it to the final here. :)

Congrats, Feddie! :hatoff:

Can't imagine how he could lose before the SF (I guess I shouldn't jinx it, eh? :aplot: ), so it really is a case of whether can beat Djokovic and Nadal. And, on the basis of some of what I have seen today...it almost sounds surprising to say that I think he should be more concerned with Djokovic. Rafa was rubbish by his standards.

Good try by Martin, some nice shots.

Federer looking in good form. Great serving, some nice forehands and a lot of sneaky dropshots.

The only potential obstacle before Djokovic will be a top version of Monfils, which isn't too likely considering he was doubtful to even enter the tournament.

first of all Federer never said he hates the drop shot, he said he doesn't like to use the drop shot because it ruins the beauty of the point or something to this effect, and he doesn't feel like it's a natural part of his game.

secondly, what the hell is "lame" about it? he is good at doing it, and it's such an effective shot on clay, which showed today, he even won every single drop shot attempt against Nadal in Madrid, he should definitely use it more, and there is nothing lame about it :silly:

Solid match from Roger, very good variety and seems like dropshot is slowly becoming one of his main weapons on clay ;)
the first set was an error fest, but once he won it, the rest of his game clicked nicely, as usual, the first round wasn't that impressive, he didn't need to get second gear on a guy like Alberto ;)

Err close, but not that close, you shouldn't think Federer is a player that values beauty over winning - he will choose winning ugly over losing beautifully everytime, just because his style of play is very elegant it doesn't mean that elegance runs through his veins - he is a cold-blooded killer when it comes to playing tennis.

The reason why Federer doesn't like drop shots is a very, very good reason and a lot of pros use the same reason after being taught a certain tennis style - he said that why should I hit a dropshot when I can hit a winner from anywhere in the court, over time he has learnt to use the dropshot more and esp. on the FH side.

Martin tried his hardest and didn't bend over for Fed, I have to give credit where it's due, most of Federer's opponents are frightened by him.

I hope he gets asked about it, I mean - he used them more in those past few matches than he has in his entire career.

I agree. He seems to have realized he needs to get over himself...to some degree.

Nadal fans shouldn't gloat. Federer's whole attitude and composure out there is noticeably more positive than in recent French Opens. It seems the courts are rewarding big serving more this year. Federer is trying out some new tactics finally. And Rafa is going to have to play himself into form. He gave up more games today than almost all of last year.

If a Djokovic-Federer semi happens and Federer gets through it, Federer will be more confident than he's ever been in a Roland Garros final.

What Roger had to say about dropshots:

Q. The dropshot seems to have become one of your weapons on clay. You tried a couple today. Could you tell us about it?

ROGER FEDERER: They worked well. That's what I mean, mixing it up, coming to the net, hitting dropshots. You can't hit them against everybody, you know. There are certain types of players that don't allow you to do it, and others you can do it all the time. Today was sort of the right time to do them, but, you know, I'm happy I got to learn how to use it over the years. I used to not be a fan of the dropshot at all. I always thought it was a shot you only hit when you're panicking from the baseline, when you're scared maybe to take on the fight, you know.

But today I realized that actually you can use it to your advantage against like players like today. It just makes it a little bit more easy.
