RG R1: Nadal def. Daniel 7-5 6-4 6-3

Rafa was horrible in the first 2 sets, a little bit better in the third but concentration collapse allowed Daniel to get some more games.

Daniel put up a great fight here but Rafa will raise his game when the tournament progresses.

Sloppy and unimpressive from Rafa.
32 UE, lost serve 3 times, lost 11 points in a row in third set.
Need to step it up (I'm sure he will).

He was unlucky, but I'm not sure if he would have won a first round match against a lesser opponent. Today he had nothing to lose and was swinging freely, under pressure situations he's usually terrible.

Still tired from the 14 hours battle against Djokovic one week ago.

There are no single handers on clay anymore, only 30 years olds like Marcus who play challengers are still fighting for their existense.

Anyway, the answer is Gaudio who even bagelled him a long time ago when Nadal was just becoming Nadal.

A very mediocre performance by Rafke. Upped his level when he needed to, but in all... not good. Surely didn't look like the 'Unbeatable pink Claymonster'. I have no doubts that he'll be able to raise his level in his upcoming matches. Congrats, Raf. :hatoff:

Nadal played much better last year against Bellucci than today. Bellucci being a lefty ballbasher is a bad match-up for Nadal, he was hitting lots of winners and not allowing Nadal to feel comfortable on the court. Today was more a case of Nadal playing shit and hitting plenty of UEs.

I pretty much nailed this scoreline when talking to my dad about it last night.

I am not a Nadal apologist, but I thought this would be his toughest match until the QF. He hasn't been on his best game lately, struggled even in the exhibition. The courts the first two days have not been the best for Nadal's game, and Daniel has been playing on these courts for a week through qualifying and was much more on form for him.

Obviously Daniel was never going to be good enough to win, but he did what I expected him to do given the conditions today.

As for the pink shirt, ouch.

I tell you a good type of clothes, I don't know if this is legal but if a tennis player wore an NBA Jersey that'd be good fashion, as long as they remodel the style so the racquet-butt doesn't get caught in the armhole. NBA jersey's are very good artwork.

Rafa looked rusty...but did what needed to be done (to coast). Each year, he "struggles" in the opening round of RG...getting used to the conditions. Should be ready by the time he reaches Hewitt...and then there, he can "hone" his game...with the probable long groundstroke rallies.

On this evidence the favourite for RG is the winner of Federer-Djokovic. They have even put Nadal in pink to reduce the possibility that these two will start playing like little girlies as soon as they get into a pressure situation against him.

With that shirt, I think he wants to be Ivanovic.

Well played by Daniel. It's always good to see opponents give it a go against Rafa/Fed in grand slams, and both opponents did it to a certain extent. As someone pointed out in another thread, Daniel was good when there was nothing to lose, but got stuck whenever he had the lead or a chance to lead.

I'm guessing Rafa is probably trying to take the Federer path down the grand slam, which means getting through the initial rounds with a minimum of effort, and treat them as a warm-up more than anything else.

I am surprised that the shirt attracted more attention than his game. For those who think men should not be wearing pink, welcome to the 21st century. Men can wear any color nowadays. And of all the players out there who can carry it best, Nadal is definitely one of them. He is masculine and tanned. I agree that it would be look disgusting on Murray or Davydenko.

My thoughts on the result. Nadal won first rd against qualifier last year by same score. Horrors. That guy was an unknown with a big lefty serve too. This year, he wins a Brazilian qualifier playing one handed, right handed, like Federer did against him in Madrid. Larry Passos is the guy's coach. Larry has been studying Nadal's game up close and personal since Barcelona. Result is expected. I would like to think it gives Nadal practice for whne he faces Fed or Djokovic playing him the same way, but Nadal needs to improve those UE numbers.

The pink shirt has to go. I thought my eyes would burn when I got a look at it on TV. The shoes are awful too. What is Nike thinking? I thought his AO outfit was ugly too, and couldn't imagine a GS winner in that outfit. He proved me wrong. I guess he'll prove me wrong again at Roland Garros. I hope.

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. Yeah, same like always, why I was white and yellow two weeks ago. :haha: Because it's better than dress the same color every week, no?

Q. The start of the game was a bit difficult today. Any reason?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, always tough, you know, beginning here. Roland Garros always is difficult. Yeah. I say, no, I expect a tough match, and it's normal, now. And when I start, normally I didn't start to play my best here the last four years. But the important thing is be with positive mentality and try to win, no? And I win. I won in three sets. That's important.

I played in some moments in the third a little bit better, so just try to keep improving to play better in this match.

Q. Is there a chance that in the third round you could come up against Lleyton Hewitt. You've played each other eight times before, and you've won four each. What do you make of him as a player?

RAFAEL NADAL: What?

Q. Lleyton Hewitt. You could face him in the third round.

RAFAEL NADAL: I understood. Only the last.

Q. (Through translation.)

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I'm sure Lleyton is a great champion in this sport. He has very good career. So always is a pleasure to play against him, but right now we are in second round, yeah? Not yet. I have to wait.

Q. Do you feel that the heat change, the condition if compared to last yearmaybe or two years ago where it was pretty cool here, the condition of play?

RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, much better, no? I prefer to play with these conditions than raining or cold, no?

So it's much better for us, I think.

Q. Do you feel more confident or less confident than last year when youstarted Roland Garros?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. I don't know. Important feelingis ‑‑

Q. There is no difference?

RAFAEL NADAL: Every year is different, no? But I never compare, two years, so ‑‑ Idon't know.

THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions.

Q. Yesterday you were telling us you're a bit nervous, anxious. Was it the way you felt today when you walked on the court?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, not really. Maybe at the beginning to start with. The court is big, and at the beginning, I didn't quite get the best feelings, but I won in three sets. That's very positive. I should have won more easily, but at 5‑4,when I had to serve, then I had to serve again ‑‑ sometimes I missed some opportunities to win the set earlier, but it was a difficult match.

I had practiced well before, but I know that I can improve, and I hope I'm going to continue improving for my next match.

Q. My question is not about your game but about Fabrice Santoro. He's playing his 20th tournament here. What do you think about him, about his career on the tour?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, he is a legend on the tour. He plays with his very own personal style. Two hands. He was a very charismatic player on the tour, and he's a model for all of us. 20 years, long career. That's fantastic. We all wish we can play for 20 years.

So he had a beautiful career, and he really deserves a tribute.

Q. What can you tell us about the way Marcos Daniel plays after your game?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don't know. His backhand is better than his forehand, but I think I made it a bit easy for him. That's my opinion.

Q. How fit are you as compared to the previous years?

RAFAEL NADAL: Oh, comparing again. Well, physically, I feel ‑‑ well, I don't want to compare with last year, because I can't remember. That was a year ago, you know.

But I feel good, and last year, I played a match ‑‑ well, I didn't play well, really, and little by little I felt better. This year ‑‑ well, it's not a very good start. I'm not going to say it's positive. I would have preferred to start with a very positive start, but I hope this tournament is going to be long enough for me to give me time to adapt and to improve and get good feelings all along the tournament.

Q. About the fact you didn't play that well, are there any compartments in the game where you felt you were not at your best?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, my leg game was not that good. I didn't play well with my legs. But, you know, in sports it's ‑‑ in a tenth of a second you have to catch the ball and everything can change in agame. You need to be present there, ontime. If you play well, you have the feeling you'll be on top of the next ball, but today I was a bit short in my shots. I was not very precise. It wasn't neat and clear during this match, so this is what I need to improve.

I need to play more ‑‑ I need my shots to be longer, and I do need to improve on that.

Q. You played at the hottest hour of the day. Now, for the upcoming matches, what would you prefer? Would you prefer to play at a different hour because of the heat? Is it affecting you?

RAFAELNADAL: No, I have no problem with that. I can play at any hour, and this is perfectly bearable temperature.

Real men wear pink.

Real gaylords wear pink.

I like the outfit too. The yellow is a bit much with the pink, but I think the pink and dark blue are nice together, and I like blue shoes on clay.

I saw it grey on TV.

Real men wear pink!

Very original, eh?

I don't have a good feeling about Rafa's recent confidence :scared:
I hope he'll raise his game match by match.

Vamos Rafa

Yeah, but he did say he was nervous.

Maybe he'll settle down the next match..

I read somewhere that pink and yellow are bullfighting colors.

Apparently the matador's costume comes in all colors.

But this muleta reminds me of Nadal's costume.

But if Nike wants to take inspiration from bullfighting, it should consider this style.

Q. This question is not about the game. It's about your dress. You are in pink today. Why you are in pink today?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. Yeah, same like always, why I was white and yellow two weeks ago. Because it's better than dress the same color every week, no

Only when he speaks Spanish. When he speaks English he is very humble, I think he actually tries to say he is better, but misunderstands the language. :p

I have to agree I was surprised that Nadal said something like that. It was a very Federer-like thing to say. Maybe the #1 spot or his clay reputation is starting to mess with his head.

on another note, when was the last time Nadal lost to a single hander on clay? (apart from Fed).

Gaudio. If I remember correctly, the Cat defeated the Bull 3 times making him and Roger the only two players to have defeated Rafael more than once on a clay court which is ironic since they are both one handers...

Terrible match by Nadal's rock solid standards today. Maybe it is the pressure for going 5 in a row like Roger at 2007 Wimbledon. This does make me wish even more that Gaudio played Rafael today if a nearly no-namer like Daniel who has a decent one hand backhand got this many games off a first round match, not to mention how mental it would be for Nadal to play Gaudio.

So Roger starts this tournament off sharper than pinky.

It's such a typical first round for him. IMO he didn't play that poorly. His winner/ue ratio was positive, and actually he was quite aggresive with his backhand. I think he may be trying to conserve energy by being more aggressive. I think he'll be fine.

Think Pink (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmaffpKAYcw)!

Pedro Almodovar probably dressed Nadal. The Spanish palette turns away from no color.

My slight concern about that outfit is that it might be a losing one. The French is the one tournament where clothes sometimes do matter. Federer has made some bad sartorial decisions -- in a symbolic sense -- over the years, for someone who pays strict attention to fashion. His clay-smudged white kerchief headbands have sometimes made him look like he has a head wound when playing against Nadal.

Nadal was alright in this match. Not inspired. Daniel played some good tennis. He is like Bellucci in that I'd like to see him play more.

http://www.rafaelcastellanos.com/wp-content/gallery/traje-de-luces/traje-luces-0.jpg

pink, yellow, red, blue, silver, gold...

usually the "taleguilla" (pants), the "chaquetilla" (jacket) and the vest are the same color, the gold threads are usually reserved for the "matador" (bullfighter) and the silver and black threads are for the "cuadrilla" (entourage) but at the end of the day, the colors on the "traje de luces" are really up to the bullfighter's choice ;)

in that pic, the bullfighter is on blue and gold (purisima y oro, like Manolete) and the rest of guys are his entourage ;)

still, that color combination Rafa used looks AWFUL on anyone, doesn't matter if it is a woman or a man :o
