HONG KONG - Pete Sampras thinks his record of 14 Grand Slam titles will be tied by Roger Federer at Wimbledon this year.

Andre Agassi, left, and Pete Sampras had 34 meetings, and Sampras won 20, including the finals of the U.S. Open in 1990, 1995 and 2002, plus Wimbledon in 1999. Agassi beat Sampras in the 1995 Australian Open final.

Sampras made the prediction Thursday while discussing an October exhibition match against his old rival Andre Agassi in Macau.

Federer needs one more major title to match Sampras' mark. Sampras never managed to win the French Open before he retired. Federer hasn't won the title at Roland Garros, either, leaving Wimbledon as the most likely opportunity for him to tie Sampras.

Federer's five-year winning streak at Wimbledon ended last year in a five-set final loss to Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who also won the French Open last year and the Australian Open in January.

"It will be interesting for Rafa to come back as defending champion as before he was always just a contender, so there will be a bit more pressure on him this year," Sampras said of the looming Wimbledon tournament. "Roger is very hungry for the title and he came so close last year.

"If I was to put my money on it, I would say Roger, but he's not a shoo-in."

While Sampras was mulling over Federer's prospects, he was reliving his own past clashes with Agassi.

The two Americans will face off on Oct. 25 at The Venetian Macao casino in the Chinese territory and gambling enclave.

Praising Agassi's service return and passing shots, Sampras said in a telephone conference: "We always had really tough matches and we brought out the best in each other."

When the duo were top and second-ranked men's players in the world in the mid-1990s, the rivalry "transcended the sport," Sampras said.

"When people ask me who my great rival is I always tell them Andre."

Sampras won 64 singles titles, and Agassi took 60, including being the last man to win all four grand slam titles over his career.

In 34 meetings between the two, Sampras won 20, including the finals of the U.S. Open in 1990, 1995 and 2002, plus Wimbledon in 1999. Agassi beat Sampras in the 1995 Australian Open final.

The Sampras-Agassi exhibition recalled brighter times for American tennis, but Sampras said the presence of Andy Roddick (No.6) and James Blake (No.16) in the world's top 20 showed the U.S. game was not in bad shape.

"It tends to go in cycles," Sampras said. "In the early 1990s people were saying the same thing and then Andre, Jim (Courier), Michael Chang and myself came along."

Prior to the Sampras-Agassi match, two of the games brightest junior players will face off.

ITF Junior world NO. 1 Yuki Bhrambri will play American prodigy Ryan Harrison. Both players train at the IMG Academies in Bradenton.

Bhrambri, teh first player from India to win the Junior Australia Open and the Orange Bowl, recently won his first two ATP Futures titles back-to-back.

Harrison became the third youngest player since 1990 to win an ATP main draw match, winning at Houston in 2008 at the age of 15.

Last week, Harrison reached his first quarterfinals in a USTA Challenger tournament at the Sarasota Open on Longboat Key. Along the way he beat former world No. 21 Taylor Dent.

Charity Auction For Agassi, Sampras Items
By Tennis Week
Wednesday, July 22, 2009

They are two of the greatest Grand Slam champions of all time and when Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras renew their rivalry on October 25 in Macao, you can come between the former World No. 1 players — as the official coin tosser.

Agassi and Sampras will square off on October 25 at the 15,000-seat CotaiArena in their first clash in seven years at The Venetian Macao Tennis Showdown 2009. On the same bill, rising young talents Yuki Bhambri from India and Ryan Harrison from the United States will face off in singles followed by a doubles match with all four players competing. Sampras, who has played on the senior circuit since last year, suggested the rivarly renewal could be the first in what he hopes will be more matches between the Grand Slam champions.

"I keep active and focused and play a few exhibitions. I am curious to play Andre; it has been many years since we last played," Sampras said. "We are both preparing and I know we both want to do well. I’m excited and hope this will be the start of something between the two of us."

The Macao event is supporting the "Andre Agassi Foundation" and Sampras’ "Aces for Charity" program. The event also supports the "Make-a-Wish Foundation Hong Kong-Macao" and its mission to grant wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. In the first event in 2007, the Showdown raised almost $200,000 in an online charity auction.

A similar auction will be launched this year and organizers announced a long list of items to be won by successful bidders.

Twenty nine personally signed items or memorabilia are to be auctioned, all of which have nostalgic or historic value. Prizes include autographed Sampras and Agassi shirts, shoes and rackets, and three priceless coin toss experiences for the three matches. Fans also have the rare opportunity to hit exclusively with Harrison and/or Bhambri in two twenty minute sessions. A bonus for each winner will be the chance to invite a guest to join them. The online auction can be found here.

Harrison, a 17-year-old Texan, recently won his first professional event in Chico, California, sweeping all before him as an unseeded entry, without the loss of a set. Harrison was also nominated as hitting partner to the U.S Davis Cup, captained by Patrick McEnroe, in the recent tie against Croatia. In Macao Harrison will square off against Bhambri, who won won his third professional event on Sunday July 5th as he continues his meteoric rise. He currently ranks as the No. 1 junior in the world, having already won the Orange Bowl in 2008 and the Australian Open title earlier this year.

The Venetian Macao Tennis Showdown 2009 is the third in the line of stellar events held in the former Portuguese enclave. The first in 2007 featured two of the best players in history, Roger Federer versus Pete Sampras, and the second in 2008 featured McEnroe, Borg, Federer and James Blake. Agassi vs. Sampras in 2009 continues the tradition.

Sampras said he hopes this is the first in a potential series of exhibitions with Agassi.

"I'd love to play against Andre. It's a great ticket to come watch us both play, and hopefully we can do some more next year," Sampras said. "I'm open to it. We'll see if Andre is into it. We're doing one this year. We'll see how it goes. We'll go from there."

Tickets for the Showdown are on sale and can be bought online at www.cotaiticketing.com , by phone at +853 2882 8818 (Macao) and +852 6333 6660 (Hong Kong), or in person at Sands Macao Lobby and CotaiArena Box Office. More than half of the 15,000-seat stadium has already sold out.

"The interest is this event is terrific, and given we are only in early July demand for tickets is high," Nick Freyer, Senior Vice President, Head of Tennis, IMG Asia, said. "We very much hope fans join in the spirit of the tennis auction, it will bring joy to the winners, but more joy to the deserving recipients of the auction."

The match will be televised though networks and broadcast times have not yet been finalized.

Sampras won 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 (super tie breaker)

....Sampras continued his strong form into the super tiebreaker, overwhelming Agassi with his powerful serve. Trailing 9-6, Agassi saved two match points — the second with a down-the-line backhand winner — but Sampras served out the match with another ace....

Andre won first set ... but...
how he could loose it then? :(
did some body see it?

I saw it. In the first set Andre served extremely well and Pete looked more uptight. Pete seemed to relax in the second set and started to serve better. It was great fun to watch and high level tennis for two retired players. There were some really nice shots from both men. ;)

So from what I read here, Sampras 10-8 (so tight match) thanks to his aces on a fast court against Agassi, yeah some things never change:o

You're right.

I went to bed at 2am and got up at 5am just to watch the match. It's been years since I had to do that to watch the Australian Open. Oh, good old days. :p

The match was alot of fun. Andre didn't play too sharp in the second set. The doubles match was hilarious. Andre made alot of jokes. The whole atmosphere was great. I was sitting in the midst of Sampras fans and kept yelling Andre lol.

Personally I thought the last service game Andre had was horrible. It seems he was in a hurry to get off the court. that's what I feel.
