Here is how the top players line up:

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as Yokozuna (=Grand Champions)
Novak Djokovic as Ozeki (=Champion)
Andy Roddick (a former Ozeki) as Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I)
Andy Murray (a former Sekiwake), Fernando Verdasco and Juan Martin del Potro as Komusubi (=Junior Champions II)

The top Maegashira (=non-champion) ranks are filled by:

Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (former Sekiwake) at M1
Nikola Davydenko (former Sekiawke) and Gael Monfils (former Komusubi) at M2, and
Fernando Gonzalez (former Sekiwake) and Marin Cilic at M3

No player is on a Yokozuna run. Roddick, Murray and Verdasco could get promoted to Ozeki if they reach the final; Tsonga, Simon, del Potro and all former grand slam champions if they win the tournament.

Results thus far:

-- Djokovic goes Kadoban (remains Ozeki but will lose the rank if he misses the quarterfinals at Wimbledon)

-- Murray is back at Sekiwake, Roddick drops to Komusubi

-- del Potro has defended his Komusubi rank; if he wins his quarterfinal over Robredo he gets promted to Sekiwake

-- Verdasco drops out of the Sanyaku (=Champions') ranks.

-- the quarterfinal between Soderling and ex-Sekiwake Davydenko will produce a new Sankyaku-ranked players (probably Komusubi)

Murray has all of a sudden a pretty decent chance to become the 29th Ozeki of the open era -- all he needs is reaching the final, which seems quite possible after Nadal's exit. Del Potro would become Ozeki if he wins the tournament.

will Roger's rank change if he wins the tournament? I know he's already a Dai-Yokozuna, but I want to know if there's a bigger rank over that one :wavey:

Sorry, not that I knew off.... Calling a grand-master a "great grand-master" is as good as it gets in ozumo.

The sanyaku-ranks post Roland Garros are taking shape:

Yokozuna: Federer, Nadal
Ozeki: Djokovic (kadoban, hence could be demoted at Wimbledon). Del Potro has a small chance to get to Ozeki, but he would need to win the tournament
Sekiwake: Murray, del Potro (if he doesn't win the tournament), and the winner of Soderling vs. Gonzalez
Komusubi: Roddick, and the loser of Soderling vs. Gonzalez

Verdasco demoted to Maegashira.

So del Potro, Soderling are Sekiwake, Gonzalez is Komusubi.

Sanyaku-ranks for Wimbledon:

Y: Federer, Nadal
O: Djokovic (kadoban)
S: Murray, del Potro, Soderling
K: Roddick (ex-O), Gonzalez (ex-S)
