Outstading from Gulbis, he seems to get really motivated in this tournament. Hope he goes far, he's entertaining to watch when his brain is in its proper place.

Expected. Almugro next, Ernests won that encounter last time around but I don't know about now.

Ernests needs to beat Almugro, Verdasco and Wawrinka/Davydenko to defend his points from last years QF. Tall order indeed!

Just when you give up on him, he comes up with a win. Typical.

Good win! :yeah:

I just wonder who was compiling the statistics. Could this really be true, what that RG livescore thing was showing..?

Gulbis - 96 winners (26 aces), 23 UE
Querrey - 53 winners (15 aces), 18 UE

These W/UE ratios look just

Nevermind statistics :p He was in the zone for the whole match and he was solid. :yeah: It's a good start.

The ace numbers are unbelievably high at the moment. Uncle Toni was just reported having been seen walking to Chatrier with a hose in hand.

If Gulbis plays with this consistency, he should beat Mugro, and then R3 Gulbis-Verdasco will be a basher's delight.

Upset of the day.

Guess Querey is not the one to beat Nadal afterall, too bad I was really expecting great things to come this week from the big guy.

Gulbis was really solid, I guess Pilic managed to get his head back straight. Let's see if it can last for another round...

But he won :woohoo: :woohoo:  :yippee: :D :D :D

stats are wrong in all matches

But Gulbis did have 26 aces, and probably 60+ winners total.

That was one speedy clay court men's match! About 2 hours total for 4 sets?

Yet another poor effort from Sam....though it may not have mattered when Gulbis is in beast mode like this.

All of the courts have played quite fast today. Gone are the days when different surfaces actually differed by more than colour.

Surely the stats are all wrong.

I saw in more than one match where the stats were claiming that both players had hit more than 100 winners

At Roland Garros. I managed to see alot of this match and Mugro's too.

Gulbis looked fantastic for alot of the match. Beautiful winners, serving, found his range, great use of the dropshot and not afraid to come forward. It's these kinds of performances where you see the potential. Having said that, Sam's game wasn't too great. The guys were cracking the ball around, and maybe a smarter player would have used more variety to hurt Gulbis.

Mugro looked awesome, although Gordo gave up after the 1st set. Defending and moving surprisingly well, and hitting huge off both sides. The serve was incredible as always. Should be a very fun encounter between the two if they can replicate the form in their first round matches.

queery is a mug on clay, his greatest life achievement will be taking a set off nadal at altitude clay in a tiebreak, something he will tell his kids one day.

Rough loss for Sam, but it's good to see Gulbis hitting winners instead of home runs.

Gulbis played amazing given the stats, now he needs to build on this desopite a tough draw, if he can get past the second round who knows maybe he could go fairly deep and get lots of confidence back for queens and wimbledon.

Badly needed win for Gulbis here and he gets it. Next round against Almagro is guaranteed to be a masterpiece of point construction and tactical thinking.

Sam pays the price for his limited commitment on clay this year but in fairness, he might have lost this match even if he tried his best during this clay season.
