Almost 30 year-old Kendrick won his first match on European clay and 1st five-setter in 4th attempt. 35-22 in aces for him. 35 aces his personal record, served 32 aces against Nadal.

Brands looks like a marathon-man, three 3-setters in the qualies and hard 5-setter in the 1st round.

USA AL THE WAY!!! Kendo in 5 baby!!! Way to grind!!

35 aces, 85 winners for Robby!!
66%- 59% 1st serve percentage brands-kendrick

Great stuff from both guys. Both huge servers. Robby had a set point in the 1st set and was easily in control of that point which he let slide. Rallied and fought back however. In the 3rd set tie-break, Brands had a set point on his own serve and Kendrick powered the return back and eventually won that point. Go Robby!!! :woohoo:

A classic FO match. Two guys who don't figure to go far in this tournament just going at each other for five sets. Good to see the American get it done, especially since he is still recovering from the flu.

Kendrick probably one of my least favorite americans but props to him, he just told Pam Shriver he had the flu all last week, today was his first day not on antibiotics and he had no idea how he'd hold up over 5 sets, so respect for the fight :worship:

same here.

If Brands has another day of rest instead of playing Sunday, the result may be different.

Must have been very tired. Too bad, he could have won against Kendrick, maybe should have won...

Daniel :( Wasted chance.

But full respect to Kendrick for making it through, especially if he only just recovered from the flu.

If you liked what Kendrick was wearing today, look at the thread I made about the company, it has all of the information for you to get your hands on the gear, and about the company and who else they sponsor. Click here (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?p=8615102#post8615102).

It doesn't look that good. I like the entire idea behind the company though, just not the styling of the clothes.

Yeah, over the player who just straight-setted him two weeks ago. 20/20 vision.

He had a set point over Simon in Estoril though, and that was without a fully firing serve, on a really, really slow court. On faster Roland Garros, with half the field setting new personal best ace records ......

Just think vs Zverev in Rome, where Simon won 20% of all return points, or being bagelled by the Toad in Dusseldorf last week. It's not impossible :-) Admittedly pretty unlikely, but you never know - not like Simon is remotely in form to start with.

More generally, Kendrick is a moron for not achieving more in his career. That serve is insane when it's working well.

Now you're worrying me. I should never be so sure as I was in that post. It's asking for it.

I guess we'll find out. I can see him testing Simon right now, but not sure if Kendrick has what it takes to last 5 sets against Simon. So he would have to do a Zverev on Simon. Kendrick and Brands were playing quick-strike tennis that basically ignored the surface entirely.

That said, Kendrick was serving fire. You're right, he's very talented.

Yeah, he said afterwards he's given up trying to adapt to clay, figured he's screwed on the surface so just went all-out banzai for the net whenever possible :-) That's something Simon has struggled with since he lost his form (losses to Steps, Tsonga, Llodra, Ancic), and his record against the huge servers this year is atrocious too. Combine the two, might be the perfect storm :-)

Needs a few things to come together really: Kendrick serve on fire again (35 aces yesterday!), to recover in time (few days at least), Simon in full-on muppet mode (like last week in Dusseldorf), and the rain to go (forecast says yes, although not as warm).

Can get 8.0 on it, so it falls into the what-the-hell category of bets :-)
