What a fight Lleyton. Most players would've folded after being two sets down, especially after two long tiebreak sets. :worship:

Karlovic sucks. His serve is clearly his one and only weapon (awesome as that one weapon is). :help:

He simply can't play best of five matches. When Hewitt took the third, I would be willing to bet my kidney he would win :o

As soon as Hewitt won the third set I knew he'd win the match. Karlovic is pathetic in best of 5 matches.

I actually had a "free" morning...and didn't even turn the TV on to watch this. Don't know that I could have stood it...but I'm likin' the result. Good on you, Lleyton, for staying in there at two-sets-down.

Ivo was actually pretty good the first two sets. Aside from the serving, hit a few nice winners. Was dead on his feet the final two sets though.

Hewitt made a right muppet of himself, went a break up in the 2nd and then gave it right back. That tiebreak he screwed up as well, put an easy pass into the net.

Karlovic really struggled physically towards the end. He sure makes it harder on himself when he doesn't give himself a chance of winning five set matches. Having said that, he would have trouble not having tie-breaks in fifth sets as well.

Anyway, good on Hewitt for hanging in there just like you would expect him to. Karlovic played a couple of great shots every now and then in the opening two sets (particularly late in the sets and on some big points), I don't think he won them only on his serve. But his level of play seemed to fade away as the match went on and Hewitt started hitting more of those low returns.

I actually saw a topspin backhand down the line winner from Ivo today.

So this match memorable for more than one reason.

Beat that absolute farce of a tennis player. Serve, nothing else.

5th set, 1-1, he tries a second serve ace on break point. Double fault, match over. You suck, bye. :wavey:

Hewitt was this close to become Ivo pigeon. The first 3 sets (until TB) went just like in their previous encounters, TBs and Hewitt losing every single of them. The first TB that Hewitt ever won against Karlovic came in 3rd set after almost a perfect service set from Ivo - with just 1 point lost on his serve. But somewhere in the 11th game strikes Ivo poor physical condition, with lungs pressing his diaphragm. Hewitt smelled the blood and the power balance on the court started to move toward him more and more with every point. Ivo services started to lose speed and Hewitt gaining on confidence, passing shots started to flow from every position, 4-5 amazing signature lob shots from Hewitt and even a few ROS winners on 1st service. Kids , that is why you have to have impeccable stamina to do well on slams, especially on dirt.

To be honest, I didnt believe that Hewitt can come back from 0-2 deficit, especially when Karlovic served like a monster. But he always was a fighter and he proved that today again.

At the end of the 3rd, Karlovic tried a bh slice winner down the line that went out after it clipped the top of the net. It was a pretty long and important rally. Karlovic took a time violation right after. That was the beginning of the end for Karlovic.

Also, i noticed a lot of passivity on returns from Hewitt.

Lleyton :inlove: so glad he won been his fan for 8 years now. It was a really tough for him in the 3rd tie-break because he already played 2 in the previous sets and Karlovic didn't seem to be letting go of those huge serves and games full of aces, but he really held on there and it was well deserved in the end, it could have been a lost match if he didn't keep his calm and didn't continue going for the shots in his service games.

poor ol' goliath... got cut down pretty hard like...

well i reckon it's safe to say that Lleyton don't really need to go out there and practice his return game tomoro... he'd have got enough there today... actually, you'd have to think he'll be looking sharp after squaring off vs a 55/match merchant like Doc Ivo...

yessssssssss...! GET... .... IN...!!!

Hewitt looked bad for the first two sets. Finally he started making some backhand returns and stepping in to take second serve returns early (instead of getting screwed by high kick bounces) and his confidence turned around from there.

Karlovic got the better of more rallies than I expected him to especially in the first set, it was odd, but Lleyton was having an error party which wasn't helping matters I'm sure. Also I noticed Lleyton was hitting every single forehand pass down the line (never crosscourt) ... predictable much? Actually prediction didn't even matter because he hit so many of them out.

Anyway I'm glad Hewitt won because Karlovic is almost unwatchable.

Great to see Karlovic losing, he doesn't play tennis - he shouldn't be allowed to play.

That's BS. Sure, his game may not be very inspiring to watch. It may even be borderline boring at times. But the guy is 210cm (or something) tall. It's only natural that he serves well and consequently struggles with shots that demand fast footwork, quick changes of direction and touch.

When I was watching the first couple of sets, I thought he played actually pretty well. Some nice volleys, a couple of good backhands and forehands.

Now I have lost 2 potential Nadalbeaters in Karlovic and Querrey, I really dont see anyone left in the draw who can handle Nadal. Lucky spaniard.

His physique is obviously not what you would call fat either. Plus for his height that weight is within the normal BMI range.

And when it comes to 5 sets is's very difficult to maintain high % of serve so he is losing it

Yeah, sure I wasn't dissing him or anything. I just noted that he weighs a lot, naturally because he's tall. Not saying he's fat or anything.

What I meant was that since he weighs a lot, his muscles need to be in top condition to endure long matches, even more so than for smaller players since his organs, bones and other non-muscle tissue weigh more.

yeah... it was a vintage win for hewitt, who, in his prime, would pull these type of matches out with alarming regularity... and especially good against the guy who put the hoodoo on him in his last GS title defence which was also a 1st rounder, and had complete ownership of hewitt ever since...

fingers crossed for a match up with #1...
