Seeing as Lu's only ever clay court victory came 8 years ago in the Davis Cup against Pakistan, I'd pretty much say that this was an EXPECTED ONE.

:rocker2:

Takes his record at RG to 3-0 in R1 matches, not bad for someone that's never been in the top 100.

Tough match against Gaudio or Stepanek next, but not impossible.

Better stat than some of top players. :haha: Incredible, but there is also some luck involved here.

As a professional with Lu's earnings (career and YTD), would you not cash in a 15.000 € cheque for showing up and playing a set even though you're obviously ill? He does get that money even though he retired, doesn't he?

I know I would show up and I think it's perfectly understandable from Lu's point of view. With a really, really lucky draw or a really bad fall from his opponent in the first set he might've even been able to get to the 2nd round. Was worth a try for a set at least.

Sadly for him Montcourt is not a total clown on clay.

Get to the 2nd round? :haha:

He's only played 5 matches on clay in his 8 years as a pro. That includes all futures and challengers aswell. I reckon almost every other player in the draw would be able to beat him on dirt.

that's why I wrote he might've needed a really bad fall from his opponent, like tearing a ligament or two ;)

Obviously. Lu is the worst clay courter in the history of tennis. Roddick would triple bagel him.

That's a good point.

I agree that it's totally understandable why Lu continued to play despite being down with flu for more than a week now.

Obviously we don't know how many pro players struggle each day to try to make a living and continue to play with limited sponsorship and resources.

Lu is one of them but he's also the only Asian man standing in the top 100. So he must have done something right to keep him in the sport.

It was expected for Montcourt to advance, but if Lu was not fit, he should not have played, really.
