ESPN: Federer won't reach Wimbledon Final

Garber: I, for one, do not. While Federer did a nice job getting to the final last year after a dicey start to the 2008 season, who did he beat? Lleyton Hewitt in the fourth round, Mario Ancic in the quarters and Marat Safin in the semifinals. Federer didn't lose a set in those three matches, but this year, rest assured, there will be younger, hungrier opponents waiting for him. Though last year's post-mononucleosis/back struggle was a physical one, you get the sense that Federer is battling himself these days. This hasn't gone unnoticed in the tennis community. It's one thing to lose to Nadal, Djokovic and Murray, but falling in straight sets to Davis Cup doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka in Monte Carlo does not bode well. I would like to see him get to that Wimbledon final as much as anyone, but I'm not feeling it. I'm not sure Roger is feeling it.

This is a discussion between two commentators who have always been right in the past (right about being wrong that is).

Is that same Simon Reed who said that Anne Keothavong had a great draw though on her first appearence at RG she got WTA #1 in the 1st rnd? I fail to see how exactly getting the #1 seed (even in WTA) in the 1st rnd makes a "great draw"

See. We are not smart enough to understand the garbers, reeds, and Bozos (sorry, I meant Bodos) of this world. You get the No. 1 seed and even if you lose, you gain experience so the next year when you get the same lousy draw, you lose with more peace. After all, if you fail to take a game against the No. 1, next year you won't even show up!

Federer losing to Murray or Djokovic on grass has 0% chance of happening, only person who can beat him is Nadal, and he doesn't really "beat" him, he just returns the ball time after time and is defensive through out the whole match, if anyone tries to attack Federer on grass they stand no chance, hence why Murray and Djokovic will not beat him, as they both are attacking baseliners.

It was not that long ago that Federer seemed unbeatable on any surface other than clay. Now itís a bit of shock when he wins a tournament. So Federer losing to Murray or Djokovic might not be such a surprise this year.

Have you seen Federer play live on grass (in Wimbledon)? You have to watch to understand that only a certain type of player can beat him on grass and even that type of effort takes over 5 hours of play, Djokovic stands no chance due to his aggressive nature while Federer will just outmanoeuvre and out-think Murray, like he did in the USO 2008.

ever heard of upsets? there is no "unbeatable" player, if Fed stayed true to himself and his game he can beat anyone in Wimbledon, not even Nadal stands a chance, however if he played horribly which could happen (P.S. he is human), he could lose to many players and Nadal is the first on the list.

Some people have no clue - Rafa beat him last year but nobody else has shown anything to suggest they can beat Fed on grass. Murray was a beaten man against Gasquet - so chill. He's done nothing in my eyes to say he'll beat Roger in a 5 set match on grass.

I'll be shocked if Roger isn't in the Wimby final.

While you have the logic there sometimes genius disproves logic, if Federer has a bad day on any surface at Grand Slam - he will still win unless it's a top-level opponent like Nadal, on grass he has played terrible sometimes and still won matches in 3 sets, last year against Hewitt for one set he was awful - the kind of performance that makes you think "What's so good about this guy?", but he still won. Like I said, you have to watch him to truly understand that he is unbeatable on grass - except for 1 player, and that is Nadal, and he takes well over 5 hours to beat Roger.

Murray had beaten him 2 times prior to the USO 2008 match too (I think), didn't change one single thing. Federer is a different animal compared to Murray in Grand Slams, that is why Federer has 13 Grand Slams, and Murray has ZERO.

A remarkably poor discussion/analysis from those two commentators.

Like others, I don't get their 'logic' with the Wawrinka defeat on clay...if Fed and Stan were to meet at Wimbledon, Fed would be a 'clear' winner imo.

He could only play the guys he was drawn against last year...and it would appear that he is a victim of his own success. He should almost be praised for hammering Ancic, Hewitt and Safin...okay, all three have had better days, but they still posed a minor threat, and he made them look ordinary.

As for 'younger, hungrier' players out there...we have the oldest top 100 in how many years?

Fed doesn't "feel it?" Remarkably wishy-washy, and a load of rubbish. Fed is still top 2 on grass (maybe still #1...only lost once at Wimbledon in last 6 years, come on!), and you can count on him thinking just that when he walks through the gates to the AELTC...regardless of what happens over the next two weeks at the French Open. He is still very much the man to beat at Wimbledon, and I believe that he is actually going to reclaim the title this year.

Nadal's fistpumps were way worse. How come nobody hated his?

Safina beats A Keothavong 6-0 6-0. Didn't Reed say that it was a blessing in the disguise for Keothavong to get Safina in the first round?

If the Fed serve ticks like it was doing today then I don't see many players outside the top 4 stopping him anywhere.

Some blessing.
