Nadal loses to world number 109

Brian Dabul Beats Nadal when Nadal should have bageled him. Is Rafa hurt or just too relaxed? We'll see.

And I'll leave you with the latest Simon Reed gem:

Rafael Nadal also has a couple of banana skins in front of him. He likely won't even break a sweat in his opening matches, but in the fourth round he's likely to face either Robin Soderling or David Ferrer - and if it's Soderling it could be tough. Yes, when they played a few weeks ago in Rome Nadal won in stunning style - but Soderling has been in superb form at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf this week, and would be my dark horse tip for an outsider who might spring a surprise.

What's Pete Bode smoking?

The “Federer” quarter is at the bottom of the draw, and since I predicted that Federer would not survive to play Nadal in the final, let’s cut right to the chase. The players most likely to take him out are Paul-Henri Mathieu, who’s case of Mauresmo disease seems fairly mild (he’s often gone three, four rounds), ever dangerous but unpredictable Tomas Berdych, or Gael Monfils.

This isn't an exhibition, it's just practice and ES idiots are making a big deal out of it. He lost many sets like that during practice this year.
My God, how pathetic they are to report about this like it's something significant.

There should be no such thing as exhibition matches. All ATP professionals should win or lose ranking points every time they play, even if it means creating a tier lower than the 250s.

If they want to practise, they should practise, and if they want to play they should play their best at all times, to stop providing ammunition for people who say "it's only an exho, it doesn't count".

Yes, I know, it's about money isn't it???

we need to have tracking devices attached to each player so that the ATP can tell whenever they step into a court. even to hit a couple serves, it counts for points.

cmon guys, dont treat it so seriously, benny berthet is a promo day, simply a good chance for players to practice and for the crowd to see their favs, take pictures and autographs (much easier than on a serious match day, when players are focused on the job) ;) btw: any other results from today...?

No need to exaggerate! I'm talking about competitive matches which are advertised as such, and which the public pays money to watch. If Murray or Nadal or anyone else wants to hit serves on a practice court, or play against their coaches, or the ball boys or some guy invited in off the street, that's fine.

I don't know any details about Nadal's match, but Murray's against Mathieu was shown on British television, and I think there should have been a points incentive for victory.

It shouldn't be a big deal but I guess how Rafa treats practices and exhibitions is what matters here. HE never wants to lose. But I think this will make him mad and he'll go on a bagel rampage.

If its a media stunt, he needs to fire his entire team. People remember the losses as well as the wins, if not more so. You can't exactly call him the dominating power horse with results like this.

Probably just saw it as an nice opportunity to see some of the big names up close. Nobody is forcing player to play these exhibition so they could decline to play if they wanted to:shrug:

As for Nadal's match, it's seems more of an glorified practise set to me don't know why the score is even being reported.

What results? They were practicing. How can one think that Nadal would lose against that guy playing for real. Man, the pressure that this guys have to live with... But of course, we are here to judge them (lol)...

I have it on good authority that Uncle Toni is a few euros short, so needed Rafa to tank this match so his odds go up a notch for RG. Even a couple of points can make a big difference when placing a $25m bet ;)

From the RG website:

King of clay suffers first defeat

For the first time ever, Rafael Nadal has been defeated here at Roland Garros! Before the rest of the men’s draw get too excited however, it should be pointed out that his loss came as part of the traditional "Benny Berthet" charity exhibition matches. Rafa went down 7-5 to Argentina’s Brian Dabul on Philippe Chatrier court in a single-set encounter, with the brief shower which made the court slippery towards the end perhaps seeing Nadal decide that discretion was the better part of valour. Various exhibition matches were played throughout the day on Philippe Chatrier, Suzanne Lenglen and No1 courts, with the proceeds going to five charities which are partners of the event. Despite the overcast weather, there was a good turn-out with fans enjoying some spectacular tennis, including appearances from local favourites Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fabrice Santoro amongst others.

Pete Bodo is engaging in the sensationalism that Reed is involved in. Paul Henry is one of the biggest chokers on the planet. Please man. Monfils maybe but he is injured. Roger has a smooth road to the semis. I would have preferred if he picked Novak to beat Roger. But PHM beating Roger is a low blow insult.

Practically zero chance that Federer loses before the SF...couldn't have asked for a better draw, full of clay clowns. However, if this were his draw at Wimbledon, it would be a different story. ;)

Yes, it would have been better if they had predicted Djokovic to beat Federer...certainly a realistic chance of that happening imo.

As for Rafa's exho defeat...well, it is easy to blow this out of proportion. My understanding is that it was raining? In which case, why risk a slip/fall? It isn't like he'd be playing in those conditions over the next fortnight. But, on the other hand, I couldn't imagine him really wanting to lose a set of any description away from the practice courts...he always puts in 100%.
