Chances of Murray withdrawing from RG

I'm watching him play in his exho against Mathieu right now. He barely won the second set 7-6(5) after he lost the first 4-6.

At almost every shot he grabs at his back and his facial expressions look very painfull all the time. Is it possible Muzza is carrying an injury?

Yes.

Andy also said something like he didn't want to do too much chasing down balls as it was just an exhibition and he wanted to be fit for RG.

I don't buy it! One of Murray's strengths is that he hates to lose any match, even "just an exhibition". He lost either because he wasn't fully fit, or because he just wasn't good enough on the day.

Either way it's a bit worrying for RG, but we'll know soon enough.

It's weird. It isn't like Murray at all, not giving 100% even at exibition matches. Remember Abu Dhabi? Maybe he's superstitious enough to think that winning at exo = early exit at slams?

That was against Nadal. It obviously meant more, along with the $250,000 for the winner.

Anyone who watched today's match could tell that Murray really didn't put in much effort.

You say faking injury? I say lulling the competition into a false sense of security when Ali came up with “rope a dope “ He was a genius. When Andy gives it a go, people get snooty. You will see as he will be pissing himself all the way to the second round.

Even with great family and mother coach, Murray still has an ass ego and injuries that conveniently showed up.
Maybe he'll pull the annual Federer excuses. Virus, back injury, rain, easy draws hurt preparation for grass event....tiredness, darkness, bad challenge system, unrelaxed and agitated.

You say that, but I'd wager that you can't name one time Murray has cited an injury as the reason for a loss. Take all the time you need.

Not yet. I was very disappointed with that 5th set against Verdasco when he was arguably the most confident and in form. If he has a poor RG, then that will mean at least 2/4 slams this year will be below par. His slam results to outside play have not been matching up for sure which is why I somewhat can see Djokovic's point since he has proven himself already and has reached the bigger stages more often.

I hope Murray cements his slam contender status SOMEWHERE this year.

That's a bit of a myth. Murray has only played, I think, 13 slams in his whole career. 2005 was his first year on tour and it was only half a year, essentially.

2006 was his first full year on tour, and he reached the 4th round of Wimbledon and the US Open.

In 2007, he basically missed 3 out of 4 slams due to the wrist injury (he still hadn't recovered by the time of the USO) and he reached the 4th round of the AO, losing to Nadal in a tight 5 set match.

In 2008, he lost in the first round to Tsonga at the AO. Bit of a bad break, given that Tsonga took everyone by surprise and Murray was his first victim. He then lost in R3 at the French, which was no surprise. He reached the QFs of Wimbledon and then the final of the US Open.

At the AO 2009, again a bit of a bad break. Lost to an on fire Verdasco and was ill (whether you want to attribute the loss to illness is up to you, but he was bed bound with a virus).

If you actually break down Murray's slam performances, you get a more accurate picture. People seem to conveniently forget that the wrist injury meant that his 2007 season was almost a write-off. By contrast, Federer reached his first grand slam final at the 18th attempt (20th if you include losses in qualifying for grand slams). Murray reached his first on his 12th attempt.

When you look at it like that, are you really going to say that Murray hasn't stepped it up in the slams?

Clydey
05-21-2009, 04:42 PM
Hamburg vs Volandri in 07.

Funny.

Well, if we're going to get technical, he didn't blame that loss on an injury. He didn't actually lose the match. He withdrew while he was up 5-1 in the first set due to a wrist injury that kept him out for most of the rest of the season. ;)

It counts as a loss on his official ATP H2H with Volandri. He lost because of the wrist injury. What other reason did he give?

Irrelevant. I was obviously talking about a match that he actually lost on the court and later blamed an injury for. I wasn't talking about a withdrawal as a result of an injury that he obviously couldn't play on with. Nice troll attempt, though.

You must be struggling pretty badly to come up with one if you're using the Volandri match as an example.

Bah. The "Big Four" is nothing but media hype. The media couldn't wait to throw Murray on the pile even though he's never won a slam. Big Three, maybe, but there was never a Big Four. It was always Roger+Rafa (the Big Two) and then everybody else.

NT = Non-Tennis. It's another section of the forum where stuff like this usually goes.
