Has Nadal ever lost a match in which he hasn't been tired? You Rafatards just never cease to amaze me. The guy had all the break points but Roger didn't go stupid on them like he always does. And he broke Nadal almost every time he had a break point. No 1 out of 20 break points conversion for the Fed. Can he beat Rafa in RG? If Rafa gets a Djokovic or Murray in the semis and is really pushed hard (like 8 hours), Roger might. But this victory and title helps. It's a big deal to win your first title of year on clay!

Yes indeed Fed's "secret plan" is working hehe. Guess he decided to stop tanking and put Nadal back in his place, maybe he just saw how vulnerable Nadal looked so he took the opportunity to demoralize him before RG. In any case, anyone who doesn't realize that this is the first time Federer has TRIED to win this clay season is delusional. Fed tanked deliberately in every other clay tourney this year at some stage. He was just practicing his serve, volley and slice and biding his time. In Rome Fed played a few points seriously and made Djokovic look like a confused kid, then he just tanked away, point after point, not even bothering to take a step toward the ball. I am telling you now that Fed will win RG this year AND Wimbledon and nobody can stop him.

Just as a disclaimer I declare once again that I love Novak and Nadal but Fed will soon be #1 again after a weird year of illness and learning he is about to be a father, getting married, etc. He's still the best, and more than that the most strategic and just plain artful.

Yes, I'm exaggerating. :p

Comparing the match in the AO final, it was quite different in my opinion, Nadal was just a wall there. But now I've never seen Nadal hitting balls at the net or out, also some quite easily.

Good stuff that Federer didn't let the match go, and stand up firmly to win it. He took the advantage.

And people want Nadal v Fakervic to be the final? Fuck that. Semi final is what we want, with five hours of gruelling tennis leaving Fed to finish the pig off on the Sunday.

Here's hoping.

You've had your chance with that year after year. It's past time for Federer and Novak to face off in the semis. We'll see if it happens.

Obviously I prefer Rafa to Federer, but I got a kick out of this. Federer finally played a smart match on clay and took advantage of Rafa's increased vulnerability this week (he's as weird playing in Madrid as he says the Madrid courts are). This makes things a lot more interesting going into Roland Garros.

Not looking forward to all the Fed glory seekers who've been AWOL of late crawling back out of the woodwork. But cheers to the ride-or-die brigade.

No one here or any of the tennis commentators (or David Foster Wallace for that matter) know the ultimate story of Federer and Nadal. It's something for them to keep writing.

Roger is a legend and as much as they wanted Rafa to win, you don't cheer first serve faults. They did cheer Roger in the ceremony though.

Wow, sour grapes much. Yeah, Nadal was subpar but if Federer just stood there and did nothing or sucked even worse than Nadal, he wouldn't have won, so give the guy some credit.

I can't give credit when this is not deserved.

That match was one of the flukiest win I have seen. Not only Nadal played horrible during all that match, but Federer needed that Nadal threw all the big points and give him the victory.

Federer was terrible today, against the shadow of Nadal. He has big chance to take a beating like last year at Roland Garros if his level is not multiplied.

Basically he was dumping the ball wide or into the net ever 2nd rally. The 1st serve though at 80% the average speed was only 130-140km/hr. He was cramp walking throughout the whole match. He didn't sprint at all, didn't chase any balls, he just jogged. If you want an example of what im talking about watch Bernard Tomic footwork during the Australian Open this year. During half way of the first set he vomitted and at the end of second set he did it again in the middle of the court during a rally then he had to go to toilet due to severe diarrhea. He was pale a vampire, couldn't even hold his racquet up properly. After the match the officials asked him if he wanted to be brought to hospital by an ambulance instead of staying for the ceremony but he was good sports to refuse.

Slow around the court (by his standards at least, but makes massive difference to his game)
Couldn't return
No depth on shots
Many mis-hits, he was really struggling with timing
Un-clutch on the bigpoints (0/4 bps, gave away both Fed bps with UEs)
Served quite nicely though, basically the only part of his game that worked.

Basically just everything you expect when he's hit the physical energy wall. Same as when Youz beat him 6-0 6-1 in Chennai, and Fed beat him on Hamburg.

I'm in agreement with you, I hate that kind of thing from the US players/crowds. In Davis Cup, it goes with the territory.

The funny thing is that I think that kind of rudeness/expectation helped Federer and hurt Nadal. It was shoe-on-the-other-foot time, with Rafa bearing all the weight of expectation. He just doesn't play that well in Madrid.

Tactically, Federer did a lot of smart things in this match, from making Nadal wait for him on court and choosing to receive serve. Not because those things flustered Rafa but because they got Federer out of his usual loserish mindset against Nadal.

Roger did the #1 sign. Could you image if he'd brought out the Berdychesque Sssshhhh! :spit:

I hope Roger isn't vainglorious in the press conference. And I hope Rafa rebounds for Roland Garros.

I think you're over exaggerating, Nadal made more than 10 less unforced errors and was trying hard - it was in front of his own crowd, why wouldn't he try hard?

Naturally, Nadal being 23 and out of shape, while Federer being 28 and extremely fit, it was also a reason for Federer beating the Nadal - what's the saying.... "The Fed Express never runs out of steam".

He was as as pale a hungry vampire, couldn't even hold his racquet up properly. After the match the officials asked him if he wanted to be brought to hospital by an ambulance instead of staying for the ceremony but he was good sports to refuse.

Yep, Federer still had to play his absolute best to win 6-4 6-4. Pretty atrocious if you ask me

I'm in agreement with you, I hate that kind of thing from the US players/crowds .In Davis Cup, it goes with the territory.

Fed impressed me. No major hiccups. When Rafa had the last 2 bps, I thought oh here we go again. Roger loses this game and the third set 6-0. But, Roger did fight back well today. I understand the fans absolutely love Nadal. Why wouldn't day. But just as I hate J-block, I don't appreciate people cheering first serve faults. I mean that's not even a point won!

But I hate to get into this whole bigotry discussion that some have started. I am just stating what I saw and yes. I did see the match so I am not making up crowd's reaction.

Not a totally fantastic match, but any day JesusFed decides to make a brief appearance is a good one anyway. :D

Finally, the curse of the woohoo is broken, so happy. :sobbing:

For those who might not remember, ever since the second set of MC last year, since he woohooed at Rafa, things have been going just wrong for Roger against him...

Finally, it's over and Fed fangirls have something other then really great pics to be happy about. :sobbing:

OT: See, this is what happens when you get Linda banned. I like Linda, but if this is what her absence does, pls to be banned come RG final again, kthx. :p

It's a shame they lost the league, had they beaten Barcelona and Valencia and drawn/beaten Villareal yesterday, they would have been 4 points ahead of Barcelona.

Juande Ramos has done a fantastic job, but it all came down to that one match against Barcelona and they faced utter humiliation in that match.

I agree. I can't believe how the match was close while Nadal was playing that bad. Federer needed that all the things went to his side.

If you want my opinion, Nadal has nothing to fear from Federer for this Roland Garros.

Nadal hit half as many UEs as Fed. Fed's winners and play won him this, deservedly.

He won't do this at RG but it's nice to see Rafito lose on clay.

Federer is still no 2 on clay.

I don think so. Here are clay points 2009 so far
Nadal 3100
Djokovic 1810
Federer 1410
Djoko played one MM on clay more than Fed, but even without Belgrade has has more clay points than Fed. Also Djokovic lost only to Nadal on clay, but Fed lost to Wawrinka and Djokovic. Fact that he beat Nadal today doesnt make him automatically #2 on clay.

How's Rafa perceived in Barcelona for clearly rooting for Madrid? Do they actually remind him that he is backing the wrong team?

Nadull at his 23 is always tired while Federer is 28 never been, so the true warrior here is Fedexpress always keep rolling :)

Gulzhan, I was about to disagree with you and say the Federer fans were being relatively reasonable...

Federer has never been tired? And here I thought the malaise was because he had mono. ;)

Agree here.
I think the Nadal's loss today is due to the combined effort of Fed's good play, Djoko exhausting him and even Nando's effort in 2nd set.

winning titles. especially MS or GS is way more important than points or who you beat/lose to. that kind of stuff is good for the bandwagon thread though :wavey:

He just doesn't play that well in Madrid.

In 2005, after overcoming a two-set deficit in the Madrid Final against Ivan Ljubicic, Nadal remarked:
Question What was the key point to change the match?
RAFAEL NADAL: The public's support, the crowd. Elsewhere in the world, it would have been impossible to defeat Ljubicic. Thanks to them, I won this final. Now I want to believe in myself a little more also.

I think this quote does a fine job of disproving the notion that Nadal was adversely affected by the expectations of the crowd. Moreover, one would be disingenuous to suggest that Nadal's victory over Djokovic had nothing to do with the constant cheering of the vociferous, overweening Spanish fans.

Betcha it's gnawing at Djoker that he wore out Rafa enough for Roger to snatch an easy win.
