Roger looks back-in-form with few errors against Juan Martin Del Potro. He will take on Nadal in the finals.

Go Roger!!

Still leaky forehand, but I think he might have some chance to win tomorrow.

Gotta laugh at the people who thought he would win. When will people realise that Fed is a terrible matchup for Del Potro?

Good performance from Fed. I thought he looked in good shape.

clinical performance from Federer, Murray must be gutted while watching this result..

I expect a straight sets victory for Nadal tomorrow, but if Federer managed to win a set a la Hamburg last year, I will be pleased.

Del Potro was beyond terrible....no passion or enthusiasm from the Argentine.

Fed was just going through the motions....and that was good enough to win in 2 easy sets.

Del Potro kept hitting harder and harder into Fed's hand and the end result is no secret. Murray, on the other hand, does junkball dancing on court and Fed somehow doesn't handle that pretty well. What an irony...

He did show some passion in the first set when he blew all those break points, but for the most part him having no enthusiasm was due to him being tactically beaten at every part of the game - net play, baseline, serve, etc.. How can you be optimistic when you are being outclassed completely?

Well, he isn't going to get a much better chance to beat Nadal (on clay) than he will tomorrow. Sure, Rafa will be well up for the match (as with any match against Fed, and everyone knows about the Masters record), but I can't imagine him being 100% ahead of it (physically and mentally), and the conditions are a little faster than other clay court venues too.

Rafa spoiled Roger's party at Wimbledon and the Australian Open...and now Roger has a chance to spoil what would be an historic achievement tomorrow (capturing all 3 clay Masters in a year), in front of Rafa's countrymen. Would be a devilish dish of revenge to serve out, but I guess Fed will probably find a way to stuff it up (from the first 2 minutes)...

I wouldn't think so. It's all about matchups. Del Potro is a tougher matchup for Murray than he is for Federer. I'm surprised anyone expected DP to win. Not only that, but Federer played great to compound the matchup problem

So Nadal's match was a dramatic battle and Federer's was a formality. Really, it sets up the final perfectly. With these circumstances, there is actually some chance that Federer will win.

He won't of course.

But it's a fittingly dramatic end to the pre-Roland Garros swing. The last (pre-RG) clay match of the year and we finally get to see Federer 2009 vs. Nadal 2009.

I can't wait.

There are some players like Ancic, Soderling - just to name the few, which game is suiting to Fed incredibly well . When Roger plays them the tennis looks so easy to be played. Everything is clicking in his game.
I am afraid that Del Potro is becoming a new member in that list.

No he didn't, he played adequate (let me dumb it down to your level - he played his C game).

Del Potro a little tired, ridiculous scheduling didn't help either - finished ten hours later than Fed yesterday.

His level has been dropping every match since playing Berdych unfortunately (tweaked his back in practice after that), and combined with a bad matchup he saw early on there was little chance here - he needed Fed to have a really bad winners/ues day, and he didn't.

Impossible to judge much from this match as Del Potro obviously never thought he could win, and Federer almost always plays well when he doesn't feel threatened. Federer should have a good chance against Nadal tomorrow though. Like Koenig said it could be another situation like Hamburg 2007.

federer played well but only because he has the mental advantage, also the constant dropshots were annoying to watch.

Very disappointing match indeed. I expected a lot better from DelPo. :tape:

For Roger, a - mediocre - "Day at the Office".
Glad to see him try out some dropshotting and the like, and it worked out well. Don't know if it will work out equally well against Rafa, of course :help:. In fact - don't think so at all.
Roger's serve was working better as well. That, at least, is a little Sign of Hope, for all those sillies around loving both Fed AND Nad, and who'd like to see 'The Rivalry' restored, like me. :)

Congrats, Rodge, for making the final! :hatoff:
DelPo - not quite a True Ninja yet, but I surely remember your great effort against Da Muzza.

Whatever, I am so HAPPY to see Roger make the final again. It's been such a long time, whatever happens tomorrow, I don't care. I just hope for a good MATCH for once. :yeah:

This is extremely bad match-up to del Potro, but at least allmost all of the baseline rallys were even...del Potro served today 232km/h serve when he faced bp, never seen him serve that fast before...but the difference was serve, and surely Federer owns better one.

Fed was taking the ball early on the FH and JmDP looked like a clown during grounstroke exchanges as a result. Hence how the current generation of bicept-busting ball-bashing baseline mugs can still be made to look weak. Real tennis is not dead, not yet.

people keeps bringing up the word "bad matchup" all the time, that's not the accurate description, Federer has far so much variety, talent and skills to frustrate Del Potro who is a very uni-dimensional pure baseliner player, same thing to variable degrees to all of Federer's pigeons, or even Verdasco and Tsonga to name a few, ALL credit to Federer for this.

yes it's a bad matchup, but it's not a bad matchup a la Nadal/Federer one, it's more of a complete player versus a player with too many weaknesses.

HarryMan
05-17-2009, 11:32 AM

So why does Roger have so many players who are a "bad matchup" to him? Youzhny.. 9-0 record.. Ferrer... 7-0 record (I think)... Davydenko... 8-0 record?... Robredo 9-0 record... Roddick 18-2 record... Blake 9-1 record..

Do all of these players have Roger as a bad match-up? Hmmm....... Your post just makes Federer look more of a super player.
