Toughest clay match for Nadal so far this season.

3 match points saved. First one by a BEASTLY forehand.

What a tie break to end the match.

The moment was as good as it gets, balls flying through the air cause of the higher altitude, fast clay with low bounce plus awkward at times, an in form opponent who wasn't scared and believed in himself, got so close but still couldn't do it . Let the fireworks begin. Who would have thought that we are going to witness the day when Nadal will be saving his life with service winners so many times. Djokovic again payed the prize for not being able to compete with Nadal on physical level but it would have been so deserved if he won. What a 4 hour battle. An epic.

P.S The good news are that this will shut off some obnoxious posts, but the bad news are that it will allow to other obnoxious ones to gain on strenght. Coin has two sides.

Djokovic was the better player through out the match, an amazing performance from him and at the end... it was just a couple of shots that Nadal made and BAM the match went.

Did anyone see Nadal's first match point? Where Djokovic hit the drop shot and then hit a fine forehand passing shot? I couldn't believe what I was seeing at that point..

Really? The 3 match points that Novak had suddenly prove that naturally, he didn't win them because he was unfit? He is incredibly fit - played for 4 hours despite injuries through out the match. Novak kept up with Nadal and should have won this match in 2 sets, let alone 3. He had 40-15 @ 4-4 in the second set, remember now or did you not watch the match at all and are just making comments?

As always, you follow the band-wagon and never have a unique opinion, say something interesting.

More like the other way, it'll make Djokovic believe that he can beat Nadal - he's had 3 MP's against him on his own surface, it'll make him more confident.

Very reminiscent of an old match where Federer choked despite having a couple of MP's (like 2001, 2002), and he looked a different player on hard court. Shame I forgot the opponent's name.

The point where he won to make it 10-9, when Novak hit an inside-out forehand down the line (to the up right) and then Nadal responds with a forehand down the line out of no where? He hit that shot 2 times in the match, that is luck, luck at it's finest, it hit the outside of the line.

He only deserves it if he wins. If he doesn't convert, that's down to good play from Rafa or poor play from him. Either way, it had nothing to do with luck. That's the beauty of tennis. The better player always wins. It's about the big points.

Unbe****inglievable. I went to play a good 2 hours of tennis and recorded it, and when I turned it back on, IT WAS STILL LIVE!!

Nole looks like he is just cursed to beat Nadal, who won with his B game. I forgot this wasn't the final, so Nole wont kill himself. I almost feel bad for him, how hard he fought and being so close but not getting the win.

I think Nole lost it in the 2nd set at Nadal serving at 4-4 15-40. Rafa saved 2 BP's and won that game, if not, Nole would have served it out at 5-4.

4.02 hours, great stuff!!

Fed would have had the title handed on a silver platter had Djokovic won.

I care more about Fed winning titles than I care about vcash.

Same with me, I put 100000 on Nadal winning and at the end I was screaming when he saved the match points for I knew, Nadal would win. :(

What's even more embarrassing is that Nadal will probably beat Roger tomorrow in straight sets despite playing 4 hours today.

I am hardly suppressing myself not to insult you for your stupidity. What bandwagon you are talking about, find a single post of mine where I am copying others opinions? From the half of the second set Djokovic was in complete defense and did amazing job to hang out that long. If he had better fitness level he would have kept his initiative and destroyed Nadal in straight sets. Talking out of your ass won't make you either more smart either more interesting.

Quality match.

Nadal a little fortunate in the 2nd set tiebreak tbh. Netcord that dropped just over for a winner, serve off the line that took a ridiculous bounce, another netcord.

Also would love to hear the organiser's trying to defend switching on the lights at the exact moment when Djokovic is tossing the ball up at 40-30 in the third ....... when it wasn't remotely dark yet. Both players asked for them to be switched off after as well.

Djokovic should be kicking himself for playing Belgrade last week, really bad time to do that when you expect to go deep in both Rome and Madrid. When he went a break up in the third, he started cramping on serve and got broken straight back. Trainer sorted it out for the rest of the match, but small moments win/lose matches, and that was a key one.

Stunning tennis though.

Great match. Although I dont like Djoker, it is just sad that he lost the game purely physically in the end. Nadal has pushed the game to such a physical level that it start gets really boring and sad. When you watch him and several other players standing 5m behind the baseline, running crazily around to get the balls back on the court and no one can do any damage about that, it is just sad.

We will just have to wait some young studd to push this to another muscle level. I doubt how many people would still be interested in the game by then.

BTW, Nadal DID play a crap match. 31 winners, 50 unforced errors. He still wins because he has BALLS OF TITANIUM. In the big moments, Nole's balls shriveled up into little peanuts.

Is that why he pulled of a near flawless drop shot at match point down in the tiebreaker? Give the guy some credit. After the dissapointment of coming so close and losing the 2nd, then being 3-1 up in the 3rd and seeing it slip, Djokovic kept on battling. Massive respect, it took Nadal finally producing some genius to squeak past him. Djokovic would have straight setted anyone else on the planet out there today.

As much as I loved how Novak performed, he showed why he is not strong mentally when the pressure comes. He broke in the third set for 3-1 and I thought he'd cruise but he got broken back. He had 6-5, match point serving. He lost that point by being too passive. Again, at 3 match point, he just kept playing too careful. And then he lost. He won't bounce back from this. Remember, Federer had 2 match points against Nadal. He lost it and became Nadal's pigeon. And if Novak can't take 2 sets from Nadal, how can he take 3 in Roland Garros?

Only caught the match from 4-4 in the third, but it looked pretty intense, perhaps even higher defensive quality than these two played at Hamburg last year.

It's a shame that Djokovic couldn't hit an outright winner on some of the shorter balls because he was playing very smart, tactical tennis. In now several key matches this year, Nadal has shown how susceptible he is on the BH side: he doesn't generate much of his own pace; his dtl is short; and he can't hit cc very well if it is coming down the line, probably a timing thing. Of the maybe 15-20 dtl shots that Djokovic sent to his backhand from 4-4 in the third, Nadal was able to go cc with it only once. As a result, Djokovic was getting to run around to his FH on Nadal's short dtl BH replies and hit his FH from his BH corner. Unfortunately, e wasn't risking as much with his IO FH, certainly not close enough to the lines to get by Nadal on clay. Anywhere else and it probably would have been be enough.

Nadal just fights to the bitter end, no matter what, and there is nothing else that needs to be said. It's an issue of mentality against him, and he is mentally tougher than anyone else out there right now. You have to beat him outright to win it.

I expect him to be fresh as a daisy tomorrow... and for all the clowns that claim organizers fix matches for Fed, notice who plays the late match today.

It's like Federer hitting a backhand winner down the line against match point at 6-7 on a tie break on clay, to a moonball from Nadal's forehand - it's just luck, so rare that Djokovic didn't except it.

Check out Nadal's UE's count and his winners - he didn't play very good today at all, it was just moonballing it back and also relying on the crowd to bully Djokovic around.

Fucking INCREDIBLE match! Well done Rafa :)

After mourning for a day or two, Novak can take ONLY huge positives from this semis. He has the game, he has the head, he has the plan, he seemingly has a brand new improved stamina (didn't look like he would melt down if it went to the fourth set, for example), and he finally found PATIENCE. Anyway, it's just a matter of time he'll take Nadal's measure on clay, and his competitiveness in BO5 doesn't seem to come under suspicion.

Quality match, but the balls of steel came through. It will be interesting to see how Djokovic reacts after getting so close.

Indeed. In 2006, post his near-win over Nadal in Rome, Federer reacted by not showing up at the French final. Hopefully Djoker does better.

Agreed. Enough with the boring Fedal finals at Roland Garros. I want to see more of this new Rafa-Djoker rivalry on clay.

Nadal has 9-0 on clay, rivalry- i don't think so

Just me who thinks that Nadal played a crappy match?

me too, at least the first 2 sets, not a great match from him but he managed to exalt his otherwise cruddy play at the most crucial moments, same way federer used to can sometimes. really bum luck that nole's tremendous efforts were for naught, great to see him fight.

not an all-time classic in terms of quality tennis but great in terms of entertainment value, esp the tbs, and esp the last tb.

That's why he played 3 sets today and won in two tiebreaks, because it was piece of cake? Fed can only dream to push Nadal this far. Maybe in 2006 but not anymore.

The point where he won to make it 10-9, when Novak hit an inside-out forehand down the line (to the up right) and then Nadal responds with a forehand down the line out of no where? He hit that shot 2 times in the match, that is luck, luck at it's finest, it hit the outside of the line.

Nadal makes such spectacular risky shots on big points that it's sort of ridiculous to call it luck. Yes, he might miss on those shots, but he doesn't, and it's something that happens quite a bit for it to be luck.

2 hours of tennis, 2 hours waiting for them to serve. CHEATERS both. And tomorrow Nadal will be fresh as a baby

There was no need for you to watch. You never seem to have anything positive to say about tennis.

Gu, trust me, it's not funny any more.

It never was funny.

So how many times does he have to do it beforehand for it not to be lucky? How about the first time he hit a forehand winner down the line in the match. Is that luck because he hasn't hit any prior?

Grow up. Go paint your nails or get your hair done, since you clearly have no business discussing tennis.

 Deprecating someone by suggesting the person is "just a girl" is sexist and ridiculous and offensive.

Novak should have had more courage on those mps, he did everything right but it wasn't enough. It never is against Rafa. I just hope this won't crush Novak, it'll be very tough to swallow this loss. Olympics part 2

Well as usual the many MTF punks have an exscuse to let their sheit fly. Anyone who can't appreciate that game has no idea what tennis is and is clearly not a sportsman.

It was a great match. Nole brought Nadal to a screeching halt on his own turf in front of his home crowd and instead of the usual, forordained pushover they held their breath for 4 fricken hours. I didn't see a single Serbian flag flying. Nole stood up proudly not only to Nadal but to the Spanish nation. That is major psycologically.

That match WAS the FINAL. Nole should never be in Nadal's side of the draw on clay.

Nothing to say that hasn't probably been said in this thread dozens of times already but yeah, match of the year, one of the best matches I've ever seen. Certainly one of the best ever on clay. Better than the 2008 Wimbledon final or the 2009 AO semi too.

Djokovic did himself really proud in this match and I think he went a long way to restoring a somewhat tainted reputation with everything he showed on the court today. Had he won the match it would have been a well deserved victory.

As for Nadal, what can anyone say that hasn't been said before. Nadal has the reputation as being the most mentally strong player ever but he has rarely had that reputation put to the test so brilliantly. And yet...somehow....against the odds once again Nadal found a way to win where no one else would have. Another huge feather in the cap of perhaps the greatest fighter this sport will ever know.

90% of people are racist to some extent. It's just a matter of whether they're honest about it, or whether they choose to act all politically correct so as to escape the judgement of others, who also hide their true feelings.

surely embracing all those racist feelings and being indifferent to the the judgment of others is a superior choice as oppose to well, fighting them ,hiding them or just being embarrassed to expose them

I forgot two other thoughts I had while watching, unfortunately downers given that everyone is praising this match:

(1) Djokovic still lost, it will hurt a lot before RG, and this match will not get him any closer to being an all time great. Nadal and he have both approaching their peak for the last year and will probably continue for the next 2-3 years. Djokovic has incredible will and self-belief, but Nadal knocks it down time and time again. Either Nadal will eventually physically implode, or Djokovic will stop believing. I'm not sure if he was near tears as he walked out, but you have to question how he will bounce back given that he was finally starting to gain confidence again from the Nadal '08 losses only recently after the two Federer wins.

(2) Most of the fans in attendance were assholes. That doesn't mean other fans aren't assholes either, but the intense cheers that went up against Djokovic after missing a first serve near the end was quite unpleasant to watch. Extreme Spanish nationalists are again giving their country a bad image.

For once in like 100 semifinals?

I'm not saying things are fixed for Federer, by the way -- on the men's side, who plays the earlier/later match tends not to have as much impact.

It may have an impact with recovery and probably varies player by player. It's idiotic for Rafatards to continually claim that organizers fix the schedules for Fed, and so counterexamples should be noted.

Why do so many GM threads end up slinging the shit?

Because there is no serious argument after the 5th page, and people resort to name-calling and ridiculous accusations over a game.

You can't expect a serious analysis to go on for too long in any tennis thread because only so much can be said about the game itself , the only reason it's growing is because many here like to act like complete little bitches.
