Fognini should have been disqualified in qualy. :worship: to Beto Martin who saved him.

Big choke for Fabio in the 1st, twice up a break, and 4-0 up in the tb. Then from 0-2, he lost only 2 games.

I don't know what problem Mathieu had.

Fognini was a bad boy and threw his racquet and it hit someone, or almost did.

I hope Mathieu isn't really injured. It was probably just mental as to why he retired. As for Fognini, he does seem like a loose cannon on the court, and carries himself kind of arrogantly. Another loss for Mathieu when up a set and a break. If I was betting I'd just bet on the other guy whenever Mathieu is up a set and a break.

at 3all in final set tb umpire gave him penalty point (don't know why), so he threw his racket towards the chair of the umpire.
Umpire said it was over, but Martin wanted to play: he said he doesn't want to win this way. Beto had 2 mp but in the end lost the tb 9-11

Amazinmg story especially Beto was a specialist of winning tie-breaks 11-9 in the decider: before Madrid '09 played three times 20-points deciding tie-break and won each of them.

Today Fognini hit a linesman with his racket (unintentionally, when chasing a ball), poor guy had to retire bleeding off court. Unreal freak this Italian

One of very few players I dislike...and after this match I dislike him even more.
Sore throat :haha: Some temperature and virus could also go with that.

I am bumping to clarify what happened here.

The chair umpire called the supervisor to the court because she was recommending a default. The supervisor is the only person that can authorize a default. The chair told him the situation, and part of deciding whether or not to default a person in this instance is checking if the person that was hit was injured. Martin said he was fine and the supervisor decided not to default Fognini. However, it was still a clear code violation, and as it was his third, should have resulted in a code violation, game penalty, thus ending the match anyway.

The chair umpire can award a game penalty without the supervisor, but in this case, felt that it warranted a default. There is a big difference in losing a match on a game penalty and being defaulted as far as fines and loss of ranking points go.

When the supervisor said no default. the chair umpire took that to mean don't end the match.

This was a case of bad communication from the chair umpire to the supervisor. The supervisor was asked about this during the officials meeting the following day and said that he didn't end the match because he wasn't aware that the warning and point penalty had already been issued. Had he known this was the third offense, he would have instructed the chair umpire to issue a game penalty, not a default, and the match would have been over.
