I know there used to be a Greg Jones thread but it recently got deleted because there was no activity in it for a year, so I thought I would remake one. Greg has just won his second futures title in Australia now on the back of a final appearance last week in another future. The most encouraging sign is that it seems Greg is very capable on Clay unlike most of our players.

Hes been grinding at the futures level for a while now but I hope this victory gives him enough confidence to pull enough strong results together to get his ranking high enough to get direct entry into challengers. This guy does actually have quite a bit of talent for anyone whos wondering he has a gigantic serve, only a tiny bit smaller than Sam Groth and can play on all surfaces which he proved in juniors when he lost to all the eventual champions of the junior Grand Slams in 2007. Hes 20 years old so still young enough but really has to keep up with Brydan Klein now to have chance of ATP success.

Moved up to 380 this week which is close to his career high of 359 that he reached last year. Probably only needs 3 or 4 more futures victories and he'll be ranked high enough for challenger entries.

It would be great if he could play challengers every week along with Bernard and Brydan. Does anyone know where he is playing next?

Found his next event, he is the 10th alternate on the entry list for a challenger in Uzbekistan next week, so he'll either get seeded in the qualies or just squeeze in for direct entry. So I guess this means Gregs either going to play futures in Europe after next week or play challenger qualies, I think he will play a bit of both. I really hope he can get a spot in the top 250 because I definetly think he is good enough and should be playing challengers every week and playing Grand Slam qualies.

Greg is back playing in a 15K future this week where he is seeded 6th. The number 1 seed pulled out so Greg shouldn't have too much trouble making it to the semis.

I will be surprised if he gets past the first round. Unfortunately he drew Jeanpierre who is probably the worst floater Jones could have drawn.

jmf07

He lost but was still able to take it to 3 sets which was good. Jeanpierre has reached the third round of the French Open, been ranked as high as 133 and has been in good form of late.

Looks like Greg is going to be playing an the Italian futures for the next couple of weeks along with John Millman and Andrew Thomas. Heres hoping Greg can gain a couple more points and creep inside the top 300.

jmf07

Into the semis of a futures in Great Britain. Has a good chance to win the tournament as number 1 seed. If he can do that it could place him in a position close to cracking the top 300 although he does have to defend a few points soon.

Well he didnt go any further than the semis of that future in the UK but this week he is playing in a Russian challenger and has advanced to the second round with a straight sets victory. The number three seed was knocked out so Greg faces another unseeded player for a spot in the quarters.

He really need to make quarterfinals here to keep up with the ranking points he gained this time last year. Greg is playing in another Russian challenger next week as well so lets hope he does well in these tournaments where big points are on the line for him.

I still think Greg has the potential to be ranked inside the top 150 for sure he just needs two or three good results on the challenger tour.

jmf07

Nice win. These Russian challengers are a good opportunity for him to do well given the weak fields they normally attract. Smart decision to play them.

Greg's having a good week and with only 24 points to defend this week and 20 points already gained he looks to be in a good position with only 4 points to defend between now and the end of september. To crack the top 300 by the end of this week Greg will have to make the final this week in Penza which would be tough but not impossible because he looks to be in good form.

The highest Greg can go this week is up to about 268, and if I'm not mistaken US Open qualifying entry list is next week so Greg theoretically could get direct entry into US Open qualies this year if he can win this challenger. That would be huge for Greg if he could pick up his first challenger victory here.

This is the best result hes ever had. He has never made it past a quarterfinal at a challenger event and now he takes what looks like an in form player out in straight sets. The next round will be very tough but anything from here is a bonus for Greg.

Also with this result he looks set to surge up the rankings, I hope he finishes the year inside the top 250.

EDIT: forgot about Burnie like 3 years ago where he made the final. Still the best overseas result hes ever had.

Greg is now at a career high ranking of 291. He is also seeded 7th in this weeks challenger in Almaty, Kazahkstan. Play Tsung-Hua Yang first round which will be very tough if he can win that match he should make quarters.

With not much left to defend this year and a ranking high enough to get direct entry into most challengers Greg should be able to finish the year inside the top 250 if he makes a couple of more good results. I'm hoping he finishes inside the top 250 so he gets direct entry into Australian Open qualifying in 2010.

Beat Harel Levy in 3 tight sets. Good solid win in a highly ranked challenger event. Next faces Lester Cook next who took out the number one seed in the last round. You really get the feeling that Greg will be a solid challenger player next year and will be knocking on the door of ATP tournaments soon.

Also good news that he had 24 points to defend this week and he has already gained 20 so he should and with no more points to defend this year he should be very close to finishing in the 250 at the end of the year which means direct entry into Australian Open qualifying and perhaps even a main draw wildcard.

A very good week for him. He shouldn't have too many troubles getting directly into the AO Qualies draw considering the cutoff was around the 300 mark last year I think (not 100% though). I think he will probably get a maindraw wildcard into Sydney but not sure about the AO.

Greg scored a solid first round win in a Japanese challenger yesterday, 7-6 7-6 over the 7th seed Cervenak. Plays Juska next, which is a winnable match. I'd like to see Greg make at least quaters here.

Does anyone know if he will play Bendigo next week or is his last tournament before the AO playoffs?

Another strong result for Greg. A 4-6 7-6 7-5 win over Juska in the second round in Japan. He seems to be making challenger quarterfinals quite often. One more win will see him finish the season around 235 which is probably where he belongs at this point.

It will be interesting to see how he does next year given he will get direct acceptance into most challengers.

Well if you don't like players that act that way be prepared to stay away from Australian tennis for the next decade because the likes of Bernard, Brydan and Greg seem to be our future!

They are those players that you either love or hate, a lot like Lleyton. Interesting to see that Brydan, Greg and Bernard are all ranked in the 200s. By the way Greg is into the semifinals of the Bendigo future tournament and looking strong to pick up another futures title this year. He'll also finish the year ranked inside the top 250 with this result.

Promising stuff from Greg, hopefully he is gearing himself up for a big 2010. Good Luck Greg

Greg is gonna move to about 203 in the world after this runner up appearance in Burnie (second time he has been a runner up in Burnie now). Greg is going to take a week off and play in Mildura and then play in the next aussie future. It would be fair to assume he will then head to Japan to play the challenger in Yokohama there next month.

Matchu
02-18-2010, 07:35 AM
Greg is through to the quarters in Mildura, two strong finishes in both Mildura and Berri next week should set him up nicely for a good strong year on the challenger tour. After Berri he will take a week off (perhaps be in the Davis Cup squad) and then head to Kyoto for the challenger tournament there.

If he can win one of the next two futures here in Australia he will take his spot in the top 200 so that would good for Australia to have another young guy in the top 200. Greg just turned 21 so he isn't doing too badly considering he is still young but in the next year you would think to have a good shot at playing ATP in the future he would need to be close to the top 100 by the end of this year.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Greg is on the outer with Tennis Australia. He has just turned 21 and is on the verge of the top 200. He apparently declined payment from Tennis Australia, which I find very odd.

This week he has not been chosen to hit with the Davis Cup team which is also a little bit strange. Maybe Greg just wants to do it all by himself because he was always behind Brydan Klein and now he is finally ahead of him.

Anyway I think Greg is a huge prospect for us, but I know a few people on this forum don't like his attitude. To those people I say I watched him at the end of 2007 at a challenger tournament in Brisbane and he showed all the qualities that have Australian players have been known for. He lost the first set but fought hard and ended up winning in three sets. This guy is definetly a quality tennis player, pretty consistant too.

Maybe he doesn't fit into the TA criteria - he is now old at 21 and they are only interested in seeing those 16 year olds make it.

I say good luck to him for breaking from AIS - look at Nick Lindahl he has done much much better now that he is no longer in AIS.

Nah it wasn't that he didn't fit the criteria, Todd Woodbridge stated in an interview that Greg actually turned them down. Yeah Nick is a great example of someone who was in the system and now is out and is doing a lot better for it.

Anyway Greg has now moved his ranking to 200, I hope this means he will only play challengers/ATP for the rest of the year. He is only 100 points away from the top 150 so a couple of challenger semifinals here and there and he will be on his way.

Good luck this week in Tokyo Greg, I think he has a good chance to make the semis.

I'm guessing he won't be in the running for the French Open Wildcard unless he puts in some amazing results. A shame as I think he would have been right in there with his SF from the juniors there and if he could have put some good results on the European Clay he would have been hard to ignore given the players ahead of him are either relatively untried on clay or are poor on it.

By the way Greg beat Statham in three sets in Kyoto. Could have won in straights but choked apparently but at least when it counted most in the third set he kept it together.

Greg is spending the next few weeks in the US, last week he played ATP Houston qualies and lost in the second round to Nick Lindahl which isn't too bad considering the form Lindahl is in. This week he is playing in a hardcourt challenger tournament in Mexico where he is seeded 2nd, his quarter looks like this:

Lester Cook USA [5] vs. Alfredo Moreno MEX [WC]
John Millman AUS vs. Vasek Pospisil CAN
Miguel Gallardo-Valles MEX vs. Brydan Klein AUS
Greg Jones AUS [2] vs. QUALIFIER

The interesting thing is that Klein won a future in the US last week where he beat Millman in the final in three sets. So all three Aussies in that quarter look to be in strong form and Greg may have some trouble advancing even though he is seeded second.

Next week Greg has direct entry into a challenger in Florida which is also on Hard so he should go ok there. If I had to guess I would think he would head to Europe after that.

Great news for Greg he "beat" Lester Cook 4-6 6-3 ret. to reach the semis in Leon. He has Gonzalez up next which will be tough because Gonzalez is Mexican and will have home town support. I guess you would argue that Greg is putting his name in the hat for both a Davis Cup spot and the RG wildcard with this result, his only competition at the moment is Nick Lindahl.

Yes, a very solid effort considering how little help he has been given compared to some. He seems to get to the level where he is either winning or comes runner up in the Australian tournaments and then heads overseas and carries the form. A semifinal/final/win showing in Mexico would be pretty impressive considering he hasn't played a tournament in almost a month, and he was knocked out second round in that one.

The fact that he was a junior runner up in RG could play in his advantage a lot when TA decide who is going to get the wildcard. If he keeps letting his racquet do the talking though they can't not pick him.

It will be interesting to see how he goes for the remainder of the year and his juniors performance at the FO will be a big advantage when it comes time to decide the FO wildcard but I think Lindahl's straightforward win against him in Houston on the Har-Tru isn't what Greg needs especially if Ball is misfiring on his return and it becomes a head to head between Nick and Jonesy.

Now that the DC team has been announced and Greg is not involved he can focus on getting some solid overseas challenger results. He is seeded 4th in Manta and should make the quarters but there is potential to go further it just depends how he plays against De Heart (presuming De Heart makes it that far). It is pretty impressive that he is able to get at least one win consistantly most weeks.

Next week and the following week he will have 39 points to defend given his results in the Aussie futures this time last year. He is playing in the American challengers both weeks so he can defend them he is just going to have to knock out a seed or two. After that Greg has nothing to defend until the end of July so lots of potential to gain much needede points.

If Greg keeps playing every week and espically if it is events such as this one in Ecuador or the one in Mexico two weeks ago then Greg is going to find himself inside the top 150 very quickly. Come on Greg I know you are a good enough player to be playing ATP.

Yeah the people over in the Challenger thread are also talking up the chances of 2001 Junior Wimbledon champ Valent who plays Deheart in the first round. It would be great to see Greg do well here. Looking at the pictures from the night final last year there seems to be a great atmosphere around this tournament with a packed out stadium and fireworks after the match. I don't want to look to far ahead but I can't help but notice that if he could sneak past the Quarters the other top half quarter looks very weak and he could very well make it into the final. Nothing wrong with Jonesie at the FO qualies. It was just a huge momentum shift... after missing break point opportunities against Cervenak at 3-1 and 4-2 up, Jonesie dropped his serve at 4-3 for Cervenak to level.
From then Cervenak's stats improved out-a-site. He went from a decent 60% 1st serve in the 1st set to an amazing 92% in the 3rd, while Jonesie dropped from an excellent 74% to just under 60% in the 3rd. More significantly is that Cervenak's returns improved, reflected in the fact that Jonesie only won about 6 out of 15 points when his 1st serve went in in the 3rd set.
No doubt a lesson somewhere in that runaway train wreck for Jonesie.
Hopefully he is in main draw at Nottingham next week... still 1 out.

Drew Tursonov in the 2nd rnd of qualies. Good effort by Jonesie, pushed Tursonov all the way on the back of a good serving display. Jonesie broke Tursonov early and served for the 1st set but could not get to set point, saved 3 or 4 break points before Tursonov eventually broke through and took the set to the tie-break, which he won 7-4. Jonesie broke Tursonov early in 2nd set and held on to take the match into the 3rd set. Tursonov served at a amazing 100% for the 1st 4 games of the 3rd set, and having broken Jonesies 1st game, shut him out. Jonesie had a break-point opportunity at 4-5 down but Tursonov denied him and served out the match. A very good performance from Jonesie. Pity he could not convert the 1st set opportunity. It should give him some comfidence for the Wimbledon qualies, if he gets a decent draw.

Jonesie did not start well today. Dropped serve 1st game and fell behind. Lost 1st set 6-2. Played much better in 2nd set and had break-point opportunities but did not convert. Led with a mini-break in the tie-break and had set point, on serve, at 6-5 up, but Witten denied him that point and broke again to serve out the tb 8-6.
Disappointing for Jonesie

Jonesie drew his nemesis Donald Young, the 3rd seed, in the Aptos Challenger. Jonesie has previously lost to DY in the semis at Junior Wimbledon and twice on the Men's Challenger circuit. He managed to win the 1st set 6-3 but DY rolled him 6-1, 6-2 in the next two sets. I think that is the first set Jonesie has won against DY, so encouraging signs but needs to works on playing the full three sets.

Kuznetsov 2-0 now in H2H, as Jonesie went down 62 62. Not his best performance. No doubt lack of preparation will have been a factor, due to late arrival in Lexington after a late departure from Aptos due to the doubles final being played on Sunday. Can now prepare early for the next tournament as he is not in doubles main draw, due to being in Aptos!

Fortunately for Greg there was an entry list for qualifying in Washington so he was always going to play unless he beat Kamke. He plays Salamanca first round of qualifying which will be tough followed by a possible second round encounter against Ryan Sweeting which also won't be easy.

Hopefully Greg can have some more good results over the US summer and he can get back in the top 200.

A great effort by Jonesie in New Haven qualifying. Against Argentinian Juan Monaco, Jonesie won the 1st set 6-2 and then had Monaco on the back foot, up 5-2, then 5-3 serving for the match. Unfortunatley Monaco was able to tough it out and break Jonesie and get level at 5-5. Jonesie held his nerve to get to the tie-break but could not deny Monaco, losing the tie-break 7-3, and then going down 6-1 in the 3rd set. Jonesie showing he can match it with the higher ranked players, now needs to learn how to close out the match.

Great fight-back from Jonesie in the 1st round qualies - up against No.4 Roger-Vasselin. Despite having 8 break-point opportunites vs 4 in the 1st set, Jonesie dropped the set 2-6. He righted the ship in the 2nd break to go 5-2 up, then dropped serve to have RV close to 4-5, but then Jonesie broke RV to win the set 6-4. The beginning of the 3rd was a huge tussle, but Jonesie prevailed holding, then breaking RV to go 2-0 up. Another long game saw Jonesie hold for 3-0, then he got the double break and cantered away from the Frenchie to win 6-0.

Also nice to find out that after the US open/Davis Cup tie Greg will head to Bangkok for consecutive challengers and presumably attempt to qualify for the ATP tournament if he doesn't go deep in the second challenger.

I like the fact that Greg is not heading back to the Australian futures just because it would more convinient and comfortable for him, he is playing challengers like he should be. He will need some strong results in the challengers in Asia coming up but I'm fairly confident Greg can keep a spot inside the worlds top 250 by years end. Come on Greg, show us what your made of.

Greg won 2nd set with 1 break 6-3 but Lodja, serving first kept the pressure up and broke Greg to go 5-3 up. Greg has been given a pretty good draw for the Commonwealth Games. He is seeded 5th and only needs to worry about James Ward in his quarter. Here is his quarter:

JONES Greg Andrew (5) AUS
MANDERS Gavin BER

PATEL Kamil MRI
GODAMANNA Harshana Dinuka SRI

MURRAY Jamie Robert SCO
CAREY Rodney BAH

PATRICK LEONG Michael SOL
WARD James Dino (4) ENG

If Greg did make it through his quarter into the semis he would most likely face fellow Aussie and doubles partner Matt Ebden. Here is his half in the doubles:

MANDERS Gavin
THOMAS David Kevin Andre Vernon

LEWIS Haydn Lee
KING Darian Dimitri

GODAMANNA Harshana Dinuka

RAJAPAKSE Rajeev

SKUPSKI Kenneth David
HUTCHINS Ross Dan

EBDEN Matt
JONES Greg Andrew

MUGABE Duncan Kasumba
BUYINZA Robert

MURRAY Jamie Robert
FLEMING Colin

DEVVARMAN Somdev Kishore
BOPANNA Rohan Machanda

I don't exactly expect them to go far in the doubles. I think Greg has a good chance of being in contention for a medal, especially the Bronze Medal. Good Luck Greg I wish you all the best and know you will try your best for the Green and Gold. If anyone is interested Greg is entered in two consecutive challengers in California with the first starting next week. Hopefully a good run in Delhi will give Greg some confidence to pick up some wins for the rest of the season.

Jonesie appeared unruffled and stuck to the task, breaking Looch at 4-4 and then served out the set. Broke Looch again 1st game of 3rd set and went on with it. Good luck to him in the Final. Big win for Jonesie over Gilles Muller 7-5 6-3 in the quarters. Looks to back it up in the semis against De Voest as he leads 6-3 3-4. He must be serving out of this world this week because it's obvious the altitude is playing into his favor. Would be huge for Jonesie to pick up the title this week because he would be ranked just outside the top 200 and have very few points to defend for most of the year. Funnily enough it was his time last year that Jonesie also had his best result of the year in Leon, Mexico. He has entered the Leon challenger in two weeks from now also so hopeful of a strong result there as well.

Jonesie takes the 1st set 63 off the the No.1 seed, and world No.55 Yen-Hsun Lu, who had trouble with his high ball toss. Lu fought back though, the wind also affecting the big-serving NSWelshman, and won the 2nd set 61. The 3rd was close, but serving first helped Lu, who at 43 upped the pressure on Jonesie and, on the back of two DF's in the windy condition by Jones, broke to go 5-3 up and then served out the set and the match 63.
One wonders why Lu is not getting clay court time in Europe, playing at the Rome Masters, before the French Open? Must be some reason? Cut was 52, but there were plenty of withdrawals.

Greg back with another big result this week after the semi in Joburg and the quarter in Busan last week. He has made it through to the semifinals of the Fergana challenger in Uzbekistan this week after opting out of French Open qualies (not sure if he would have made the cut anyway). Not with out a struggle though as his three matches so far this week have all gone to three sets with the last two (both played on the same day) went to a third set tiebreaker.

Big effort from big Jonesie and would love to see him make a final here but Yuichi Sugita should be too good for him not to mention he is probably fatigued now as well. Either way it goes the great thing for Greg is that he will now jump up to around 240 in the rankings and will make the cut for Wimbledon qualies which is extremely positive for him. Also being consistent in challengers and making quarters and semis consistently is great as well.

If Greg has entered a challenger next week he will now also receive secured entry and could possibly build on this week into a strong grass season.

Played each other once b4 (Burnie 2010) and Jonesie got up 3&3, so has a chance here. As Matchu said though, fatigue could play a part if it is a long match, but Jonesie is tough and has the ticker.
Good luck to him

To my surprise Jonesie pulls out the win over Sugita 6-3 3-6 7-5. This will be Greg's first challenger final since Burnie in '07 so it has been a long time between drinks but I feel Greg is much more ready now. Dudi Sela will be his opponent in the final and I would say if Greg can use his height to his advantage (I believe Dudi is only around 5'9) then he could be in with a chance, just needs to serve well.

A win here for Greg would be massive and can certainly set him up nicely for the Grass season and a lead in to the US summer. Don't be under any illusions though, a win over Dudi Sela would require a massive effort.

I think Sela will win, he's in shape too! But you're right, if Greg's serve works this can be very close... in the last few matches Greg beat his opponents after grueling battles so I think he is mentally tough. However, finals are always something else than the other matches... wonder if his head will hold.

Yeah you're right, he doesn't have the best record in finals either (RG juniors loss, Burnie loss, futures finals losses). I watched Greg in two of his three matches at the Australian Open qualifying this year and he was certainly mentally strong. His main objective is to hold serve and that is how he builds confidence.

If someone gets an early break on him 9 times out of 10 he will lose that set but with a few holds of serve under his belt he plays much better on the receiving end. I'd love to see him get up but I think Sela will be just too classy for him. Then again I said that about Sugita and he beat him so hopefully I am proven wrong again!

Too much tennis this week and solid tennis from Dudi Sela takes it's toll on Jonesie, who had nothing left in the tank after four mentally and physically draining long 3-set matches, and Sela wins the final in two quick set 62 61.
A good showing from Jonesie this week in getting to the final but needs to play less tennis getting there. He is still suffering from an injury to his left leg which is taking time to heal. He should rise about 40 places in ranking to 215-220, which will leave him well placed for the rest of the year.
Well done Dudi Sela in winning back-to-back Challenger titles in the last two weeks, which will see him back in the top 100.

Jonesie stepped up in round 1 of qualies in Sydney, beating 110 ranked big serving giant German Daniel Brands 7-5, 6-3. Worked his way into the match, matched Brands to get to 6-5, then broke Brands to get 1st set. Dominated Brands in 2nd set to lead 5-1, then serve out match at 2nd offering 6-3

In second match Jonesie went down to No.3 seed American Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 7-5. Match was played in windy conditions (Homebush of course) and was a closer affair than score-line suggested. Jonesie played well but did not cope with the power of Sweeting at first, then worked his way into the net and the match.

I agree with RustyOz's assessment. I only watched from mid way through the second set and he was definitely matching it with Sweeting particularly in the power department. Just a few points here and there proved the difference sadly. Such a shame he had to be on court 9 as there was no seating or room for anyone to really see. Next round was tough. Against giant leftie Frenchman Kenny De SCheeper, who knocked off the No. 15 seed, Jonesie won the first set and then, after not being able to convert double break-point twice at 15-40 in the 2nd set, dropped his serve and lost the 2nd set to De Schepper 6-3. And the play was suspended at that point due to poor light at 9pm Paris time.
So Kenny and Greg came back today for the "dash for cash" 1 set match decider. And it was Jonesie, serving first who came through, breaking De Schepper in the sixth game and then holding serve to win the set 6-3 and advance to the final round of qualifying.
Go Jonesie
