Greg plays Frenchmen Nicolas Devilder who is ranked 281st in the world, simply against a play of Devilder's stature i think Greg should win this but in saying that, wouldnt Nicolas have a fair bit of experience compared too Greg on the clay?

The clay court experience of Devilder too much for Jonesie, who lacked penetration on his serve and committed too many errors compared to Devilder. Jonesie served at 72%, fairly decent, in the 2nd set but only won 32% of those points, so Devilder must have returned well. Hope that Jonesies previous leg injury did not affect his play.
Disappointing end to his run, in a match he could have won.

Shame, missed opportunity but great for him to turn his recent mini slump around and get some much needed matches in after his long injury lay off.

Hopefully he can get going again for the Grass season, the ranking slip will probably cost him a spot in wimbledon qualies, hope not..

devilder now into r3

I suppose that is the reason the Jonesie struggled against Devilder, a former top 100 player coming back from an injury lay-off, who is a very good on clay. R3 at Roland Garros is class. But I agree, a potential lost opportunity for Jones... if he could have beaten him. Not to be, this year.
Good luck to Devilder.

Not a good year for Jonesie. Struggled through-out the year with injuries. Knee for two months in March/April, lost fitness. Then ankle for a few weeks mid year and then the last month has had an inflamed elbow, which limited practise and hampered playing.
He seems to be low on confidence but at same time is still hitting the ball well in patches. Serve percentages are the most affected.
Will be interesting to see what approach he takes in the new year.

Great fight by Jones. Came from a set down, won the second set tie-break well, at 7-4. Broke Hanescu in first game of 3rd set but gave the break straight back, and then had to play catch-up every service game. Saved bp at 2-3, then took it to the tie-break. Lead the TB 5-1, then 5-2, Hanescu got it back to 5-5. Then they swopped match point opportunities until Jones broke at 10-9 to win the TB 11-9. Held his nerve well.

Another great fight by Jones. Held serve well in the 1st set, in breezy weather, not giving up a break-point opportunity but forcing Melzer to save a setpoint at 5-6.
He then saved three set points in the TB, two on Melzer's serve, then won the tie-break.
Came from 40-0 down to break Melzer in the 2nd set, to get to 2-1, and then immediately went 0-40 down, an opportunity for Melzer to break back, but a good point followed by two aces got Jones back to deuce, and to hold to go up 3-1.
He broke Melzer again for 5-2 then served out the match to love.
Jones again held his nerve well.

After the way the year went, can you blame them?

Even in that 5 set match with Dolgopolov, while it was a good effort to get it to 5 sets, it was all Dolgo that gave him the 2 sets and Jones didn't show much game at all. His play in Auckland this week has seemed to improved tenfold and hopefully he can play this sort of tennis through 2013 and the results should come. Some of the shotmaking against Melzer was actually quite impressive.

A pity. Good match, though. Jonesie unlucky with that draw, again. Cops No.1 seed, who was comprehensively beaten 63,62 and replaced, by a grass court specialist, who reached the final at Newport a few years ago. Good fight by Jonesie given his score-line compared to that of Brown. Amritraj served off his face at 75% and returned well, breaking Jonesie 4 times in the tie-break, all on first serves and then shutting him out in the third set, Jonesie breaking Amritraj to get his only game, but being denied a break by Amritraj on two other occasions and then dropping serve three times. A tad unlucky.
Hope his stomach strain injury has not reared itself again.

Greg Jones beats Argentina's Andrea Collarini 4-6 7-6(3) 6-2 to reach semis

RustyOz
07-07-2013, 12:05 PM
Jonesie gets up in the semis beating No.4 seed, Facunda Arguella (ATP 169), 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

He then played No.1 seed veteran Michael Russell (ATP95) in the final.

Jonesie outplayed the experienced Russell in the first set after a nervous start, coming from 1-4 down to win five games on the trot to win the first set 6-4.
He then went "walk about", failing to press home his advantage, losing his serve early in the set, then failing to break Russell in the 3rd game when 15-40 up, then dropping his serve twice more, to suffer a bagel 0-6 loss in the second set.
He recouped for the final set but was unable to convert a 0-40 three break-point chance in the 3rd game. He then saved two match points at 5-4 down, and was unable to convert two break-point opportunities in the next game, which would have had him serving for the match. Russell held to lead 6-5 and then broke Jones to win the match 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.

A good week for Greg, and a final match which he could have won with a bit more application and perhaps some luck, which will see him back under 300, at around 250 in the rankings.

Its halfway through 2013 - What do we think for Greg Jones this year? Pass or Fail and why?

RustyOz
07-08-2013, 10:51 PM
Jonesie started the year well with two top 100 scalps, then injury/illness slowed him down and he lost confidence it seems, losing a lot of winnable matches by close score-lines. Just a pass for him, compared to last year but has upside to come.

has earned 145 pts this year, with 42 to defend, 29 pts before US Open cut, so has still has work to do to make the qualies cut.

Hopefully a Pass, and a ranking at around 200 by year-end, if he can stay injury/illness free.

So good win from Jones, who did not serve too well. Only 35% first serves in first set but won it 6-1. Improved to 54% in second set but did serve well in tie-break when it counted - 5 first of 6 serves.

Jonesie does not serve well enough to get over No.2 seed Canadian Vasek Pospisil (ATP89), going down 5-7, 4-6, in a longish match. Pospisil served well on the big points, serving 12 aces, to Jones 4 aces.
Still a decent tournament from Jonesie, who played well to stay with Pospisil despite serving under 50%, but he had his chances to do better against Pospisil.

Jonesie won his 1st hard court Futures title, with a come from behind 36, 75, 61 win over Jordan Thompson at Sydney Tennis Centre, Homebush today. He recovered from a 36, 2-4 deficit in the 2nd set, to claw his way back into the match and then break Thompson at 5-5, to win the set 7-5. Two breaks of serve and two long deuce games to hold saw Jonesie take the advantage in the 3rd set and lead 4-0, winning the 3rd set 6-1.
A good week for Jonesie which will harvest him 27 points, similar to JP Smith's result in the Canadian Futures, which will see Jonesie's ranking get below 230 hopefully.
With no points to defend this year Jonesie has some upside if he can get some good results in the last few months of this year, and is guaranteed entry into AO Open qualies next year, so will not have to rely on a WC from TA, which he did not even get last year.

Jonesie did have his chances but I think he was still suffering from his shoulder injury. He was only serving his second serve at 105kph and could not hit his smashes at full power, so was severely hampered. His fastest first serve was just 200kph. He returned very well and was better than Berrer from the baseline, breaking Berrer quite a few times but could not hold his own serve. A pity because he had a chance there.
He also had not played a match since Mid October and no doubt his training and preparaion was hampered by his back, then knee, then shoulder injuries, and was underdone on fitness, which showed in the 3rd set, where he led 2-0 but could not maintain the intensity.

a very long way to go to pull out. I wonder if it is just a temporary flare up or whether he will have to come straight back home ala John Millman?

He isn't defending champion by the way. Michael Russell is.

I heard that Jonesie pulled out prior to the match but ATP forgot to withdraw him. Believe he is still not ready to play (serve that is) but is training in the USA.
Still gonna lose a shit-load of points for making the finals in Manta last year, where he lost to Russell
