As I was still a thread virgin, I thought I could test my luck for this tournament :p

Draw is out, and Nole is at Rafa's side for a change.

2nd round: Hernandez or Vassallo Arguello

ellen, first time :aplot: :rocker2:

Raquel, first time too  :rocker2: I hope the lucky charm brings some luck to our boy. ;)

As for Nole, I'd say I'm more worried about the period coming after the clay - specifically Wimby to USO - than now. I remember JMac saying last year at Wimby that Nole said he was "mentally tired" and I fear an early burnout more than anything else. It's tough, yet very important to keep the desire and want fresh for the whole season, and I'm hoping Nole can pace himself well enough in the little time there is.

Idemo. Keep going.

Last year Nole was mentally tired because he put a lot of mental energy chasing #2/#1 ranking. This year, he's more mature and put the ranking behind him. And after Roland Garros, he doesn't have many to defend until WTF (:rolls:) so I think he'll be fine.

Any idea when Nole is going to play his R2 match? Tuesday or wednesday?

Lee
05-10-2009, 10:40 PM
He may because his next round opponent will be determined on Monday. But Nadal won't be playing on Tuesday as one of his potential opponent is Montañes who will not be playing his first round match tomorrow. Since Nole is on Nadal's half and he played today, they may not schedule his match on Tuesday.

Evening.

Forbearance required this week on the Nole  front I think. What with the stress of Belgrade and the additional demands on his continence which will result from Raquel's presence in Madrid I'll be happy with QF. Anything else would be a bonus.

And those dynamic adverts on the centre court are doing my eyes in after only a few minutes of the Lopez-Monaco match.:banghead:

I'm thrilled for Fortuna :) I don't expect she really wanted to see Andy Murray tomorrow anyway!

Must say I'm not enamoured by what I've seen of this Madrid tournament yet - seems to be no atmosphere, even tonight with a Spanish player involved, whereas the "old" Madrid tourney was brilliant for excitement and atmosphere. Hope it gets better later in the week.

Nole 2nd match on centre tomorrow, but not before 12 pm. Play begins at 11 am though so I'd be very surprised if he started at noon. He follows a WTA match-Azarenka va Peng. He and Vemic also play their first doubles match tomorrow. They're the last match on Court 4. Play begins at 12 pm with a singles match and then all doubles.

Not ideal for me either as i have to go to Dublin tomorrow, although it doesn't really matter cos i can record it on the skybox and watch later.
I've got this thing about looking up scores for matches when nole's playing,i just can't do it.You see the result so suddenly and i'm always sweating it that he'll have lost.By watching it(even if on fastforward half the time)it somehow seems more gradual and less chance of him losing.I know it probably sounds stupid and superstitious(which i'm not) but i've just got this complete aversion to looking up scores:rolleyes:

I saw the very end of Nole's practice session in Madrid yesterday and he's such a joy to watch. The crowd was loving it.
He was playing doubles with his coach when I arrived (against Vemic and another guy I didn't recognize, I was standing completely on the other side of the practice area) and everybody was having a lot of fun, it was by far the most entertaining practice session I've seen in my (very short) time in Madrid.
Really, the crowd went apeshit over him, it was impressive! Then he stayed for ages to sign for the kids and take pics, I thought he was never going to leave.

You can see a couple of pics here, but they're nothing special, I was very far:

I don't think anyone in NoleLand genuinely hates Andy. Since he's the biggest threat to Novak at the moment, I think it brings out some :scared: and  which may seem like hate. Personally, I think its more do to with feeling threatened by him rather than hating  :p

Nole is such a nice player :hearts:No, sorry, I don't know it myself, I was too far to get the jokes, I could only see everybody having fun and the reactions of the crowd laughing and shouting Nole's name.
And after having signed for tons of fans, he took pics with every single member of the crew taking care of the courts. Definitely more than any other player I've seen in Madrid during those 2 days (well, one day and a half).

Thanks - always good to hear a view from elsewhere.

Thank you! I like Andy - always have but think I am pretty much alone here in doing so  He can't help his lack of beauty and I find his lack of PR skills quite endearing - it would be easier for him to go down the David Beckham route and milk his position for all he could. He is on record as saying he dislikes the hype he gets here and his favourite slam is the USO  which went down like a lead balloon with the English press and the Wimbledon authorities. Am very happy to see him jostling with Nole at the very top of the game - should turn into a great rivalry (providing Nole can win their next couple of meetings of course).

True. Which doesn't mean I suddenly will support him. I'm not a big fan of his, but I'm human enough to respect him and it needs a lot to make me dislike or hate someone. I really do feel sorry for him sometimes  He had tough times, he went through it and hit back. I can only say :hatoff:. It's so weird, indeed  Bryans out early again, Bhupati/Knowles, Mirnyi/Ram, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski, ... :tape: Shame we can't follow it very well, seems to be an interesting development going on. I had hoped to see the Bryans in Munich but they played on the day I left :awww:

Ranking just a number to Djokovic (http://www.madrid-open.com/site/news/36/1821)

Novak Djokovic says he’s more determined than ever to reach the top of the men’s game despite dropping a place in the rankings this week.

Djokovic, who saw the No.3 spot he’s held since July 2007 taken by Andy Murray on Monday, said he tries not to focus on his performance rather than worrying about the rankings.

“To be realistic, playing three Masters Series finals in a row and winning an ATP 250 event is incredible success,” said the world No.4. “I think that I have played fantastic tennis and have had huge success on both hard courts and clay courts so I will be very patient and I am sure that if I continue this way I will get my spot back.

“It really motivates me even more to get back to the third spot or even go a step further.”

But the Serbian, who won last week’s inaugural Serbia Open, said that he felt the current “cruel” ranking system made it very difficult for the top players to maintain or improve their standing in the game.

“You try to present your best, try to perform your best tennis as possible to get far in the event and then obviously you will gain points in certain periods of the year but because of the ranking system a lot of players are dropping in that pressure zone because you have to defend the points each year.

“It’s not really the best system possible because if you defend titles each year you basically don’t gain anything. (Roger) Federer has been winning or (Rafael) Nadal has been winning four or five Grand Slams in a row and they haven’t won a single point. I think this is an issue we have to talk about,” said the Serb.

Ranking system aside, Djokovic acknowledged that Murray had earned his career-high ranking fair and square.

“Andy absolutely deserves that place because he’s been winning a lot of matches lately and playing good tennis,” said the 21-year-old, pointing out that there is still a long way to go until the season-ending rankings are decided for 2009.

"Maybe results wise it looked easy but it wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. It was difficult because there is a difference in altitude and the balls are flying quite a lot and you don’t get a lot of control. I was trying to produce a lot of spin and get in to the rhythm and I’ve done a pretty good job today."
He thinks ranking points should last over 52 weeks?

Maybe Nestor/Zimonjic will be back to the top very soon :D
I don't believe in so-called clay-court specialists actually......
