It's a tough tough lost but Nole held himself extremely well. He did not get over emotional even in very hostile environment. His opponent kept coming up with incredible shot after another, especially at clutch time. They really bring out the best of each other while playing vs each other.

It's a tough tough lost but Nole held himself extremely well. He did not get over emotional even in very hostile environment. His opponent kept coming up with incredible shot after another, especially at clutch time. They really bring out the best of each other while playing vs each other.

Nole, keeps believe in yourself that next time, you will have the chance to beat Nadal.

It was a very good match from Nole. Definitely his best match of the week. He really has made Rafa work for his victories these last 3 MS events. That is something. I hope he can take positives from that. I worry, though, he'll start to become like Fed and seem beaten mentally by Rafa. It is very hard to be 2nd best on clay when Rafa is #1.

He gets a week off now, or at least a few days really, before the French. That's probably good. :) Hopefully he'll get a good draw in Paris. I hope he's in the bottom half, away from Rafa. Been in Rafa's half the past 3 years!

DelPo-Fed starting. I don't think this match will be as good as the first semi, but you never know. I hope it's closer than the AO match between them. :tape:

It's not a matter whether Nole has the tools to beat Rafa any more. He actually won 51% of the points, 5 more than Rafa. He needs more time to develop the mental edge. I think he has showed great improvement in this match. Take positives out of it, Nole! :) Once again we realize how much we :hearts: Nole.

Roger and Juan, hope you two have a good match. I need rest after all these.

I just saw all the stats- he won in almost every category. I don't know about you all who watched but I thought on the last 2 match points Nole should have moved in. He appeared a wee bit too tentative but then again he was playing one of the best passers :p.

The next match will be so anticlimatic. And as is typically the case I bet the final will be not much of a match.

At a post-match news conference, a shattered-looking Djokovic could not hide his disappointment.

"It happened too often so I'm very disappointed that I can play this well and still not win a match," he said.

"I don't think you need my comments. You could see everything. A couple of points decided the winner."

"It's happened too often," said Djokovic.

"It's very disappointing to play as well as I have and still lose the match. I played one of my best matches ever.

I too think those break points in the 2nd set will haunt him. As well as the game he played right after he broke in the final set. This is the closest anyone has come to beating a healthy Nadal on clay so for that I truly commend him. His comments post-match are so hard to read

Don't worry, be proud, Novak was great! I'm disappointed too.
I can comfort yourself by telling that this awful loss of Novak is nothing compare to the loss of Roger in Rome 2006.

Roger play far better than Rafa, all statistics in his favor and had match point, it was in 5 sets, much more longer.

So, as a Fed fan, I understand how you feel, it stinks really because Novak and Roger are better than Rafa. But they losses.

I think Novak will lose many times to Rafa and you have to prepare yourself, yet I'm not sure because Novak is younger than Rafa so it work in his favor compare to Roger's age (27).
Novak has a tough mental too.

I am a Nole fan and Nadal won the match fair and clear. I like Nole a whole lot more than Nadal but I really can't say Novak is better than Rafa. (I won't say about Federer here)

Novak made 3 UEs at the final set TB while Rafa made none. Rafa is much more confident and mentally tough, which wins him the match. Statistics do not tell the whole story, just some facts. Statistics do not measure perseverance, confidence, emotions, etc. All may factor into the result of a match.

If I am Marian, I will tell Nole to sulk all he wants for 2 days. Afterward, pull himself together and get ready for Roland Garros. He does better and better in chipping the armour of clay god Nadal, just like he chipped the armour of tennis god Federer before. :p The road is longer, the effort is bigger and so far the results are pretty humiliating, but at least he played well enough to meet up with Nadal in semi-finals and finals. Many others don't have such a losing record and tough loss vs Nadal are because they can't even get there.

I think Rafa is the best out there right now and losing to him in the fashion that Nole did is nothing to be ashamed of - and I am certainly not ashamed of his play today. And yes, I agree I will have to prepare myself for many more losses against Rafa - it's inevitable and it will hurt - but I really enjoy watching their matches. As people say, tennis wins. Theirs will hopefully be an epic rivalry.

Not sure I agree that Roger and Novak are better than Rafa. Their games are slicker and maybe more complete but to be on top you need that ability to push through, to fight, to never give up. And Rafa has that tenacity and that ability to recognise his weaknesses and work at them. This is why I reallyreally respect him. It just sucks balls that Nole had to lose to him

Yes, for sure Nole can sulk and to agonise. I just hope he plays through it when they meet again at RG. If Nole gets a good draw and he keeps his head on, there is no reason he would not make it through to the final stages. He is the second best claycourter this year and he has proven this time and time again this clay court season. I am proud to be his fan. He showed so much fight last night. He didn't slip away like he previously did and like I was afraid he would. Shows how far he has come mentally.

I don't think the results are humiliating though. I think they're hard to swallow but considering Rafa's form and ability? Definitely nothing to be ashamed of.

Thanks for dropping in. I remember Rome 2006 only too well - have been a Roger fan since 2001. Epic and earth-shattering.

But 'fraid I have to disagree with you too; Rafa totally deserved this one - his game may not be classic or beautiful but it is awesome in its own way. Plus his tungsten carbide mental strength and self-belief set him apart from any other player which I can remember.

Nole is very unfortunate in having his prime years coincide with Rafa but c'est la vie. We just have to hope that as it didn't kill him it will make him stronger.

Right - have a plane to catch :wavey:

So touched to see all these comments. I still feel a bit sad, but at the same time glad that he never gave up in the match.
People have been saying he's mentally owned by Nadal and has no confidence in beating him. Well, Nole has proved them wrong. Despite many tough losses (Olympics, Queen's, Hamburg) in the past, he still fights like a man. It's nothing to be ashamed of losing like a fighter. Remember the MC and Rome final? He faded away in the final set. But not this time. He's fighting every point out.

To be fair, I think these tough losses are vital for the build of any great player. Nadal himself had many tough losses, say Wimbledon 2007, before he championed at Wimbledon 2008. It's because he lost many tough matches, he becomes an expert in winning epics (e.g. 09 AO SF). If Nole can keep his faith and keep fighting, he will win an epic one day and have more confidence in his furture epics. To be honest, I never expected the light-hearted, funny Djoker to be any GOAT. But after yesterday's match, I can see traces of his potential of becoming one.

Guys I am still quite devastated. I had trouble sleeping last night :o I wonder how Nole would feel!! I just hope with all my heart he doesnt give up and still believes. I dont want him to develop a mental deficit against Nadal - that is my worst fear.

I too think those break points in the 2nd set will haunt him. As well as the game he played right after he broke in the final set. This is the closest anyone has come to beating a healthy Nadal on clay so for that I truly commend him. His comments post-match are so hard to read

Elle  I feel your pain  I tried to put it out of my mind last night, but it didn't really work. I woke up in the middle of the night crying :tears: and I did it this morning too  I realise that part of my own personal problem is WHO he lost too - I probably wouldn't be carrying quite so much angst if it had been Roger or Murray or anyone else - and that is my problem to deal with. But, regardless of the opponent, I still feel so dreadfully sorry for him, and just hope our boy can be strong and re-group.

Thanks for stopping by - and I totally agree with your words  One of the reasons I admit to disliking Nadal is that, all joking aside, I really do not like his playing style  He is just power and strength and dare I say "ballbashing" :o to me, and it pains me to see him beat people like Roger for example, who has so much more grace and artistry and pure tennis talent, but not such big muscles  Each have their own opinion, and that is mine :D Good luck to Roger this afternoon, though I admit I'm still way too sad about tennis to watch it

Hi Rosie and Raquel

Raquel, Nole was visibly upset when he left the court  and Rafa fell to the ground in celebration when he won - you could tell how much the victory meant to him. The crowd were besides themselves - chanting "RA-FA RA-FA" etc. It was epic. You must have felt it when you were there? And don't feel bad about leaving early!! You may be Fortuna but it is no way your fault :p

We'll all get over this sooner or later. This one was definitely a painful loss but the good thing about tennis is that there is always another tournament around the corner :)

As for how Nole reacted - badly as far as I can tell from the Press Conference etc. Really down and depressed - and he cried at the end  I didn't watch any of Nadal's reaction - I'm sure he was whooping and vamossing and making me want to :spit: and I just couldn't stomach it yesterday. Though, in fairness, I believe I read that he did applaud Nole off the court.

 I feel your pain - I think most of us here feel the same today. It was a truly earth-shattering loss. All I keep on thinking is how bad he must feel - way, way worse than any of us - and I just hope Marian and Miljan can cheer him up and help him re-group for RG. The thought that this loss could have some detrimental, psychological effect on him for the rest of the season after he has been playing so well (a bit like Nadal's effect on Roger after Wimbledon last year), is too hard to bear.

Okay I think we all need to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Nole played excellent last night. Sure he didn't come away with the W but he came away with much more - he came away with respect. Respect from the other players. Respect from the critics. Respect from the public. At the end of the day, maybe it's not about the win  Maybe right now that's what seems important but in the long run I think we should be looking at the fact that he played his heart out and fought til the end. He didn't fade away. The fact that I believed til the bitter end this time round is a testament to the heart and fight he put into the match. In Monte Carlo after he lost his serve in the final set, I shut off my stream and tried to sleep cos I knew the outcome. In Rome I felt the doom from the beginning. But yesterday was different. And I hope that change I felt in his play will continue into RG and the rest of the season.

Let's not be sad girls. Because then this place becomes depressing to come to and I don't want that.

Most definitely. My advice to anyone going to live tennis for the first few occasions is to choose the smaller tournaments, where you can more easily get used to the way things work. After that, kind of "expand" to the bigger, more crowded, and more potentially difficult ones. To me, Wimbledon is by far the most difficult one I have ever been too - far too crowded, too expensive, and more chances of things going wrong.
