Belgrade QF: LL-Kubot - first Polish ATP semifinalist for 24 years Vliegen 7-6(6) 6-3

The last Pole in the semifinal - Wojtek Fibak in Basel 1985, lost to Edberg.
Amazing luck for Kubot through all week. He has been playing in this tournament because of Darcis injury. Serbian mug firstly, then injured Andreev, and Vliegen in the quarters who was a great match-up for Kubot because they met once (UO 3 years ago) and Kubot won the first encounter.

1q Montcourt (FRA) 3-6 6-4 6-4
2q Rudnev (RUS) 6-4 6-4
3q Hrbaty (SVK) 6-7(1) 6-0 0-6 -> lucky loser
1R Zlatanovic (SRB) 6-3 7-5
2R (3)Andreev (RUS) 3-2 ret.
QF Vliegen (BEL) 7-6(6) 6-3

Yes, like you say its been a nice draw especially seeing as Kubot was a lucky loser, but still he has done very well this week to reach a semi final, and has benefited from being in the weaker half of the draw.

on top of him winning that first encounter, that is the ONLY atp level match he has ever won. Talk about the luckiest week you could possible have. i wouldnt be surprised if karlovic and cipolla defaulted with heart attacks in their match bringing kubot into the final

At first set point Vliegen Kubot plays like a highest defensive lob of the year and Vliegen misses a sitter smash. Kubot saves 2 set points at *3:5 and 1 in the tiebreak.

Vliegen plays brainless tennis and has no brain and nerves after losing important points as well.

Kubot is a renowned linguist, he used "come ons" "ajdes" and "vamoses" in this match without any recognizable pattern, although I thought for a second vamos belongs to forehand winners.

Well done lucky Lukasz. Vliegen outchoked him, sensational stuff.

:bounce: Wonderful result for Lukasz.

I hope this give him some more confidence in his abilities. It's kinda funny that in the both of the two best results of Kubot's career he got a win over Vliegen. Kubot should find out Vliegen's tour schedule and copy it. Does anyone have an idea what Lukasz will be ranked next week?

Actually Kubot did win a few other ATP matches prior to this event. Besides the two win at the US Open over Okun and Vliegen, Kubot also has main draw wins over Andreev, Grosjean and Gimeno-Traver.

:yeah: It's remarkable.
Today against Vliegen saved 3 setpoints: 3:5 (15-40) and 5:6 in the tie-break.

Just after the quarterfinal, Kubot said he rates US Open's 3rd round as the better result than Belgrade's semifinal. In both cases he had to win 5 matches but he's right, at the US Open he had won two 5-setters so it was more difficult than what he's done so far in Serbia.

Kubot's road to the 3rd round of US Open '06:

1q Evans 6-1 6-2
2q Troicki 7-5 6-3
3q Wessels 7-6(3) 6-4
1R Vliegen 2-6 6-1 6-4 1-6 6-3
2R Okun 7-6(7) 6-4 2-6 2-6 6-4
3R Davydenko 4-6 1-6 1-6

One more thing. Lukasz's return of serve. I don't know if doubles did wonders for him, but against Andreev I counted 7 (!!) clean return winners in Andreev's 3 service games BEFORE the poor bloke got injured. Today it wasn't as flashy, but definitely deep enough, especially of first serve.

Besides Vliegen on his road to success again, it's funny that he had Andreev, one of the few more recognizable players he managed to beat already, a few years ago in Sopot.

good to have you back... where have you been...? anyways.. i see you are still in form... :wavey:

good for poland to have a male player doing good... i was beginning to think that Poland was a country dominated by females... with their great culinary skills, psychotic will power and out-of-control skin deep beauty it is easy to percieve the male population being subserviant... much like worker bees... will be great if Kubot can be a constant in the top 50...

... is Kubot the next Wojtek Fibak...?

Unfortunately he isn't but he has nice, all-court game. It would be very good see him as a regular ATP player. I believed he would be a Top 100 player when I saw his impressive victories over Del Potro and Koubek in Bratislava Challenger 2006. For those who didn't see it - Del Potro retired at 1-6 3-4 but he had been playing his normal game (obviously less consistent than nowadays) until the moment of retirement.

i havent seen him go yet, but from what i read his game sounds as though he could do big damage if he could just squeeze into the md's at places like marseilles, zagreb, lyon etc etc

I think he said something unpleasant at the shake-hands to Kubot. The Pole said "What?", and stood at the chair umpire but Vliegen didn't reply packing his bag with back in front of Kubot...

At Davis Cup in the match against Janowicz (where he lost) he performed some arseclownish behaviour (serving underarm, coming to the stands to ask people to cheer just before his opponent's serve etc.) that Dani K. would be proud of. At least that's what I've read from the reports in all Polish press.

^ Remembering his brutal destroying of a racquet in Monte Carlo against Ljubo, Vliegen seemes to be on of the biggest bad boys in the circuit right now, today he picked off the ball outside the stadium and threw with anger his mug with water :p

I don't know if any of Radwanska's wins made me as happy as a today win of Kubot against foolish Vliegen. I think Lukasz played really great today. And it is so not polish to comeback from 3/5 and save 3 SP.
Kubot will be now at 156 position in the ATP ranking. I really think he will have chances against Karlovic. Dr Ivo is a player who can win with anybody as well as lose to Mr. Nobody.
What's more, another great tourney in doubles. If he wins he will enter TOP 20!
Two semifinals tomorrow. Good luck Cool Bot!

Maybe Polish but nothing new for Kubot. At one stage of his career he had amazingly good ratio of tight matches (when he was drifting between Futures and Challengers). I think he has good mentality for tennis, the only problem is relatively weak service. IMO with better service (let's say with a decent service for a guy with this height) he would be a regular ATP player.

Kubot is definitely the toughest mentally Polish player, but still do you remeber what happened in his singles matches in 2008? He lost 7 matches in 3rd set tiebreaks and won only 2. I think tiebreaks in 3rd sets tells a lot about player's mentality. Kubot lost then a lot of tight matches, but I agree that in 2009 he cameback to winning those matches. Although, I still can't forget his loss with Bellucci form 4/1 in a final set.

Obviously they say a lot but in the first period of career he played those tie-breaks great. It's very tough to have year by year the same high percentage of tight wins, Kubot's all-time record in this department generally looks quite well, nothing to be ashamed of in the general outlook.

Sorry, you would get more for Robert Kubica's one flake of dandruff :D.

Radwanska's wins against a Sharapova or a Williams attract some attention, but Polish media are all football, volleyball and (especially) formula 1.
