Roger, you have won a title in Madrid http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0aNp7kx42j6kk/340x.jpg in 2007 and you have won titles on clay in other towns http://www.chinadaily.cn/sports/2007-05/21/xin_540504210910768262804.jpg.

Now let's try to combine both: Get a trophy for a claycourt tournament in Madrid :)

Hopefully Roger is able to show that he has worked on the things which didn't went well in the past tournaments.

Good luck :)

Since this tournament is technically replacing hamburg, does that mean roger his defending is runner up points?Yeah, Roger's Hamburg 2008 points will be coming off 52 weeks after he earned which is one of the two weeks following Madrid. Not sure which one since the calender changes:o and his Hamburg 2008 points will be replaced by Madrid 2009 points. I think Roger's #2 ranking is safe at least till RG since Murray would need to win Madrid to catch him and Djokovic can't catch him for now but I could be wrong since I'm not that familiar with the new ranking system yet.

Apparently Madrid is going to play like Hamburg but I think the fact that Fed also likes playing in German tournaments is obviously not going to apply.

It's better for him to lose before the final than to take a beating. Hopefully he will be a bit more aggressive if he does make it to the final.

Well it is kind of to be expected really isn't it? I mean a Spanish crowd would obviously support Rafa (& since Roger is his biggest rival then even when Rafa isn't playing, it kind of calls for cheering against the big rival of the local favourite). Not saying it's right of course because I always think crowds should be respectful of all players & cheer when things go right not when someone, even a player you don't want to win, makes an error. But I can see why the Madrid crowd would want Roger's opponents to win, he's still Rafa's big rival in their eyes & they obviously would want Rafa to win even when he isn't actually playing in the match.

Still I didn't get to see the match so not sure how bad the crowd was etc. How did he actually play? The result is nice :)

Regarding the crowd: According to Swiss media Roger said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper "Marca" that he would refuse to accept the "Prince of Asturia Award". Rafa and basketballplayer Pau Gasol had suggested him for this award. Roger said in the newspaper he couldn't attend the ceremony because he would have a full schedule in autumn and already have the child then. He also mentioned he wouldn't miss a tournament because of the ceremony.

yeah i get your point.
He played ok in the first some good Fh's and all but Soderling wasnt playing that great it has to be said :p then in the second Soderling served better and returned better Roger had a couple of misshits on both wings and he got broken. Roger played well enough to break back.
It was a good performance i guess
still many lapses of concentration though :o

He played very well in the first set, and Soderling was literally non existent. Wrapped up the first set in 20 minutes on the dot. In the second, he played solid in the beginning, but then at the 2*-3 game he got broken, after double faulting on BP. He broke straight back, however, after a shaky service game from Soderling. And at 4*-5 he was 2 points away from losing the set. But he held and levelled at 5-5 after which he broke Soderling. He served for the match with a love service game...ending it with a 2nd serve ace.

All in all, a solid-ish performance. 25 winners, 19 UE's and 11 aces. Needs to improve the first serve percentage again as it was around the 40ish % and needs to avoid mirkaland in the second set. Hopefully there will be a highlight vid out soon.

actually it was 52% :p
he does need to improve it indeed but considering he won 89% of the poins on first serve it didnt matter much.
He does need to improve if he wants to do well in this tournament.

It seems to be the most important award in Spain. Here you can see which people got it in the past:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_of_Asturias_Award

I don't think everybody liked it to read Roger's interview in the Spanish press about it ;) Though I haven't understand it yet whether Roger refuses the award in general or just said he won't be able to accept it personally. There's only a small mention in the Swiss media about it.

I'm a bit tired of seeing Rogi always against Karlovic at the start of tournaments, it happened SO many times... Montreal 07, Paris 07, Rome 08, Cincinnati 08, Indian Wells 09, Rome 09, and now probably Madrid 09:o..

Their matches are pretty much always boring, especially because I simply hate to see Karlovic play lolll, can't stand all-serve players..
