He defeated every man he faced, in the strongest era of boxing!

But this is not a boxing forum, so I don't want to rant about it anymore.

Maybe, but 90% will tell you they never saw him play but they know him because he is in the history books.
Same will happen with Federer.

But Federer is more popular across the world than Ali was because he is a globe trotter, adored and admire and is the favorite of all the nations exept Spain.
So his legacy will be better than Ali.
Also, with the girls, he got a huge advantage on Ali.

Federer does not belong. He's not athletic enough. Putting him in there makes tennis look like a sissy sport. If you have to go with a tennis player it should be a great athelete like Nadal or Borg. Now if this were a list of top achievers in their sport then Federer certainly would belong among the top 10 greatest tennis players of all time, top 5 in the open era.

Fed certainly had the best 3 year period in tennis. If overall body of work is considered then he will move down the list as he continues to add on subpar years at the end here.

Here is a better list, with millions of votes.

he top five Greatest Sportsman Ever are:

1 Muhammad Ali
2 Steve Redgrave
3 David Beckham
4 Pele
5 Michael Schumacher(ANI)

The polling was carried out by Internet market research company www.onepoll.com on August 19.

Ali was a great boxer and a supremely charismatic man. However, he was also naive and a racist. He has been deified because people forget about his unintelligible racist rants.

Ali was a great boxer but he's also a product of the media, a myth. I have my doubts about him being one of the greatest athletes ever.

"These include speed, quickness, endurance, power and hand-eye coordination"

But yet don't include specialised athletes who just "pump their legs for hours on end" OMG WHO IS THIS RETARD. Do they not consider that cycling or marathon running both require power, quickness, speed and endurance. Maybe not hand-eye coordination, but you could say that about a lot of sports (swimming and michael phelps for instance)

Lists like these are purely subjective anyway. Load of nonsense.I think you can only produce a list per each sport and argue about the greatest athlete in them individually before looking at the bigger picture.

Darts and Snooker players shouldn't be counted in greatest athlete lists, they require no athleticism at all

Same as golf. They are games not sports.

Real List

1) Nadal
2) Jordan
3) Gretzky
4) Bolt
5) Pele
6) Ali
7) Shaq
8) Zidane
9) Bonds
10) Borg

Aren't you tired of the whole Sparta thing? The movie was released, what, 2 years ago? You really have your finger on the pulse, dude.

Do you still marvel at bullet time and worry about the Y2K Bug? How about that Budweiser advert where the guys go "Wazzzzuppppp!" to each other? That's a real knee-slapper these days.

I can scarcely think of anything more embarrassing than some geek clinging to a fad that went out of fashion years ago. Seriously, I fucking weep for you. Move on.

Murray is so amazing. The way he bent over for Fed was awe inspiring. You can cheer for Spartans like Rafa or pansies like Murray.

I weep for all Murray lovin pansies.

Sparta has nothing to do with 300 the movie. It is a way of thinking which keeps you fighting against all odds like Nadal. When the world cheats and your opponent considers himself a demigod (Fed) it takes a Spartan hero like Rafa to beat him. Or you can be like Murray and get down on your knees (US 08) in front of the wannabe God.

VAMOS RAFA!
VAMOS SPARTA!

So you were using this whole Sparta shtick well before 300 came out? It all started when that movie was about to be released, so why blatantly deny it? It's embarrassing. Every teenage kid who couldn't get his hole was running around shouting "This is Sparta!" 2 years ago. Even they have moved on, yet you persist with it.

The worst part is that it's an absurdly inaccurate analogy. You liken Federer to Xerxes and Nadal to Leonidas, despite the fact that the Spartans actually lost. Bra-fucking-vo. Maybe when you grow your first nut hair it will dawn on you how you sad you are.

Well there are several reasons why Ali is named the greatest athlete ever.
His heart, he never gives up during a boxing match, he fought 15 rounds with his jaw broken.
And of course Ali fought with parkinson, I cant see Federer play tennis with parkinson

As much as I like Tyson, I cant see Tyson doing that, but then again, nobody can break Mike's jaw and live to tell the tale ;)

Have you actually ever went away and did some reading on the REAL sparta??? Seriously, dude, go learn some proper history. And before you say anything, many Spartan men would be considered what you call "pansies" by your standards. They cared a lot about their long hair and their looks. Not very "sparta" now is it...

Plus, sparta isn't about fighting against all odds..... Sparta was about discipline, about stoicism. And their ideals ultimately lost out to Athens anyways (the 'pansy' city)

really advise you to do some proper reading

http://www.the-top-tens.com/lists/greatest-athletes-of-all-time.asp

Ali is not the first one, but Jordan. No women, not eastern athletes...typical american list.

And this thread DO belong to NT forum, people speak more about other athletes here than about Fed.

Well you are the one who brought that up.
My threat is just about the place of Federer in history of all sports.

Dusk is not the one who brought this up. I absolutely agree with her.
Everybody knows for Ali, but also for Maradona, Pele and Jesse Owens. And people who never followed tennis DID hear for Fed and Rafa, but tennis is not so popular as football, basketball or boxing, so, unless they do something or say something extraordinary outside of tennis, they will never be among top ten.
Maradona shouldn't be on the top because of using the drugs...the top athlete should be also a good role model for the kids.
As far as Mr. Clay, americans see him as a hero for not going to Vietnam. but, in that case, Jesse Owens is a much bigger hero than Ali.
Not only that Cassius Clay was obnoxious toward his opponents, but he had a lot of racist statements, he was close to Malcolm X's murderer and the leader of musliums in USA, Elijah Muhammad, as well to Malcolm X...
He refused to go to Vietnam war only because he converted to Islam - but he wasn't a good muslim. Just look at the way he treated his wives and opponents, racist statements...
And, later, when he got sick, he said that God punished him for all those sins.

Ali always like to give a show, he likes to entertain us, ofcourse he knew his limits.
You have to remember that boxing is different then K1 (kickboxing) in K1 respect is the most importend thing.
At boxing not so much, Tyson for example said he likes to rip somebodys heart out and eat his children for lunch, he said he would like to crush somebodys skull with his barehands, and so many other bad things, so what?
Let him say that.
Ali would never say such things, why does everybody criticised Ali and not Tyson?

But Ali and Tyson were saying those things for a reason, Tyson said to intimitade his opponents.

All those bullshit that boxers say, is part of the boxing culture, now you understand?

And Ali was not a racist, if you say someone is a racist you need hard proof.

Ohh and 1 more thing, Ali's opponents didnt have the guts to stand up against Ali when he was making funn of them.
If Ali says such things about Tyson, Ali has a very very big problem.

"We are not supposed to take part in no wars unless declared by Allah or The Messenger. We don't take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers."
Ali also famously said in 1966: "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong ... They never called me nigger."
He stated, in relation to integration: "We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad don't want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don't want to live with the white man; that's all." And in relation to inter-racial marriage: "No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters."
On February 6, 1967, Ali returned to a Houston boxing ring to fight Terrell in what became one of the uglier fights in boxing. Terrell had angered Ali by calling him Clay, and the champion vowed to punish him for this insult. During the fight, Ali kept shouting at his opponent, "What's my name, Uncle Tom ... What's my name?" Terrell suffered 15 rounds of brutal punishment, losing 13 rounds on two judges' scorecards, but Ali did not knock him out. Analysts, including several who spoke to TV on the sports channel's "Ali Rap" special, speculated that the fight continued only because Ali wanted to thoroughly punish and humiliate Terrell. After the fight, Tex Maule wrote, "It was a wonderful demonstration of boxing skill and a barbarous display of cruelty." (and he was also a "nigger")
In 1974 Ali fought a rematch against Joe Frazier, Ali-Frazier II, which was notable for a pre-fight brawl on ABC Sports sparked by Ali calling Frazier "ignorant."
Ali showed unusual aggression in the interviews and called Frazier an Ape and other slurs.
Frasier is a true gentleman and has never spoke unkindly of Ali or any other boxer, at least not on TV and to the entire world. Is this respectful?
And I even didn't mention his sexual life....is this man suitable to be a role model for your child? If you say yes, cheers!

Do you justify the war in Vietnam?, because it seems like it
Ali did not want to go to war, because the people in Vietnam did not harm him, and were innocent.
About the brutal punishment, thats normal you know it's boxing you throw punches and recieve punches.
Calling Ali ''Clay'' was an insulting for Ali, because Clay was a name of a slave.

Hahah Ali called Frazier ignorant, is that such a bad thing?
Frazier seems to be a bad loser, he still claims to have won the second fight.
Tyson said against Razer Ruddock, that Razer should be his girlfriend, so ?

You dont understand what im saying, I know my English isnt perfect.
All those things that u mentioned are part of the boxing culture
