To all naysayers, Federer is done. Finished. Finito. He will always play well at times but lose to steady players. It's not that his game escaped him. But those miraculous shots won't come as often as they used to. Roger has now lost to the "real" top 3 a bunch of times without winning even 1 against them this year. If Fed thinks he can win the French with this level of play think again. I think Roger will lose in QF at French and probably semis at Wimbledon. He can't beat the other 3 guys so this year will be a disaster for him. And he might retire at the end. Who knows. Buy yay! Novak vs. Rafa will be fun.

Strong stuff from Djoko...once he settled down on Fed's 2nd serves, and got the right balance on the ground strokes, he was able to make Federer feel some pressure. Which is all it takes nowadays to make the cookie crumble...

Congrats, Djoko! :hatoff:

Fed... I don't know what to say. This was Miami all over again. Up a set, up a break in the second, up a break in the third - and then just *imploding*.

It's not that he hasn't got the game anymore. He was in cruise control during the first set - and again he brainfarts. Of course, credit to Djoko for taking his chances when they came.

So this guy claims he doesn't need a sports psychologist? How delusional of him. It should be obvious by now that he won't be dealing with his problems with Raf, Djoko & Muzza by taking on Koubek to Sardinia and train his ass off.
Time to open your eyes and be as courageous to accept reality now, Feds.

I'm surprised how Djokovic is really establishing himself as the 2nd-best claycourter this season; I didn't really think there would be one. Good for him I guess.

Federer really choked that one away, though. Djokovic just had to not completely suck when it counted.

05-02-2009, 03:10 PM
Can we at least see what happens in a couple more slams before we write him off completely people. :rolleyes:Lets not forget that he actually did better this year than last year and losing to Djokovic is much more respectable than losing to Stepanek especially on clay. I'm interested to see how he does in Madrid to get a better sense of his claycourt form though. I don't know if its only the big 4 that gives him problems or if he could lose to others such as he did in Monte Carlo.

Three factors: Federer getting tired + Federer with less patience + clay slow court not getting winners= lost his mind on third.
His game was never suited to clay, and now even less cause he is losing "performance points" :P.

2nd set :banghead:

I saw it coming right there....kind of embarassing like he loses again and again without really fighting in the end. Thats why you are 2nd and Nadal is no. 1 Rogi.

Federer unable to win deciding sets anymore. unable to serve out matches. unable to turn matches around. unable to raise his level when needed. when was the last time he could turn a deciding set around when a break behind? Federer is unable to do so for reasons unclear to me. Champions must be able to do so....:fiery::fiery::fiery:

He seems to be a very fragile persona. when his game is on he is incredible but he can't withstand pressure. Federer's problem is not his BH its his fragile mind.

Anyway, he would have lost to Nadal anyway. peak Fed couldn't beat Nadal, thbis Fed won't do it either. maybe at least Nole can put up a good fight. Fed will have his chances in wimbledon and us open again, I give up on RG :fiery:

Federer's Games is still good enough to win some more Slams I believe.

Nice comeback, Nole :D
Showed great fighting spirit to come back from 3-1 down in the last two sets, reeling off 5 consecutive games both times when i bet many on here thought he'd throw in the towel and retire ;)

I can't believe how fast Fed's game has gone downhill though... He would never have lost a lead like that a year or two ago. And all those customary aces he'd come up with at 15-30 or 30-all have become missed first serves...

Anyway looking forward to an entertaining final

this younger double-backhanded generation is simply too strong for federer

It had nothing to do with the backhand, Federer just mentally collapsed, like in Miami, AO and countlessly other times this year.

People have to realise one thing.

This is a MENTAL not physical problem. He seems UNABLE to break, or hold when he does break. This doesn't bode well for him in all formats of Tennis.

Strange match...have to give credit to Djokovic: he is now the second best player on clay in the world (in best of three set matches). I would still pick Roger in a best of five.

But honestly: Roger lost this match on so many levels. Djokovic stuck around and waited for the self destruction. Break points blown...and, more importantly, he lost because he did not come to the net!!!!!!!!! SO MANY TIMES, he had Djokovic out of position and stayed back...pathetic that Djokovic actually came to the net more times than Federer.

And to lose the two sets in the fashion he did (losing five games in a row in both sets):eek::eek: Federer has truly become a choker of epic proportions.

And, again: Djokovic showed how he and his posse are the most boorish additions to the sport in the last twenty years. Hitting his chest like a gorilla in heat after his win...and looking to yell at the Federer fans again shows the utter lack of class of the man. And his posse refusing to sit...continuing their legacy of adding the most surely of elements to this once gentlemanly sport...SIT DOWN...:mad::mad::mad:

I have to give credit to Djokovic for proving his worth on the court...but again, the man proves his lack of class off of it.

good post and I agree, Slams are afterall a different animal, and so far 2009 has been a better year than the start of 2008, but still I don't like the manner in which he is losing, it's not like he is sucking from the beginning, he schools Murray and Djokovic until he leads a set and a break then everything crumbles and loses, this also happened in the final set of the AO 2009.

I still have faith in him in the Slams, he won't be that easy to take down there anyway.

C'mon, Fedtards, bring it on:

"Federer SHOULD have won this match if it weren't for the rain. He was on the run and would've destroyed Fakervitch comfortably", yada yada yada.

Swiss Tennis Federation announced they will start a motion with ITF and ATP that all the singles matches at the ATP 1000 and Grand Slam tournaments be played in best-of-1 format, aiming to cut the huge financial repercussions of their star player Roger Federer's losses in best-of-anything-greater-than-1 format matches.

As expected not a very quality match, but you could have cut tension with a knife. We did find out who is a new second best clay courter at the moment. This was a classic example of a mental battle and obviously Roger is not the stronger one.
Federer for a set and a half was the better player, his serve was clicking, lot of service winners, practically non attacable second serve, excellent game-plan to use short BB CC slices that puzzled Djokovic. Lot of patience and not over-hitting groundies.
On the other hand Djokovic had an awful service day, at first he couldn't find a first serve , lot of DFs, then he gave up and just took off some pace from the first serve just to get into point. Not smart decision from him to force Federer BH on every single point on this low bounced clay, Roger used slices to get them back. After the delay he started to mix them more, exposing vulnerable running FH from Federer. Once Roger got under pressure he got back into his usual self lately, hitting with anger, shanking FH and BH all over the place. Once a great front runner, but now no more doubts, Federer can not deal with the pressure of the game anymore.
There are no excuses for any of them: not a whistling from the audience, not a bumps on the clay, not a rain interruptions, you deal with the given situation and Djokovic dealt with it better than Federer.

good post and I agree, Slams are afterall a different animal, and so far 2009 has been a better year than the start of 2008, but still I don't like the manner in which he is losing, it's not like he is sucking from the beginning, he schools Murray and Djokovic until he leads a set and a break then everything crumbles and loses, this also happened in the final set of the AO 2009.

I still have faith in him in the Slams, he won't be that easy to take down there anyway.

Slams are a different animal, but the player is the same.

So he chokes in 3 setters almost all the time against the top5, I guess you're forgetting the choke at AO. So stop being in denial, these choking moments is burying into him and eating him up. He needs help, otherwise retirement. It's as simple as that.

Very entertaining from my point of view, even if Novak nearly threw it away at one point, after getting broken late in the 1st when someone from the stands whisled very loudly while he was about to do a 2nd serve on BP.
Some exceptional rallies, Nadalesque whipping forehands and a few very good passing shots. Roger was serving very well, hitting that T for at least 5 aces, but his 2nd serves were getting a bit iffy as the match progressed.
Good fight from Novak despite low 1st serve %, decent depth on most shots and handled his nerves very well not to fall a double break behind following the rain delay.

Anyway, I don't see why is everyone all over Fed, not like he lost to a nobody. He looked much better in Rome than in MC, I believe he's simply trying to get as much matches as possible before RG.

Looking forward to tomorrow, another mouthwatering final! Go Nole! :bounce:

your a delusional noletard. I was obvious that Fed is by far the better player then nole and that he will always crush him when he plays his game. today should exactly that very well. Fed was in complete control. should have won 6:4 6:2 with ease. but once again he selfdestructed. Nole got lucky

It was obvious that your fellow frustrated, angry, and most importantly disrespectful fans decided to get involved at the most pivotal point of the first set and distract Nole enough to lose the set. Some will say it was only a whistle, I say BS to that. It takes very little at such a big stage to distract a player and get the other one going. If it wasn't for this hideous act by your fellow Fed hooligans, Novak would have cruised to a two set victory.

There was a time when Fed lost, I used to feel awful. These days I feel pity for him. He is a great legend whether you are for him or against him. His level of play has gotten embarrassing. It's one thing to lose 6-0, 6-1 and never be in the match. It's another thing to act like a complete midget and lose the exact same way to top players (play well for a few games and then go away). Nadal must be the happiest man in the world these days. Roger taking his Wimbledon crown back? Think again!

The frustrating thing is that he still has the tennis to do it.

I remember that before Roger started winning Grand Slams, whenever he would play Lleyton, I always thought: "Oh, nothing to worry about. It's Roger Federer = most talented player but mentally weak." I remember seeing his match at AO2003 live in the Rod Laver Arena against Nalbandian. I left that match (and it's not as if I am in Australia and in the RLA every year) because I was fed up with seeing brilliant shots one moment and stupid errors the other.

At some point, he overcame his mental weakness and went on the win all these slams. But now he's again so hesitant.
It irritates the hell out of me because the tennis is still there.
Damn it, Roger, go and see a sports psychologist. Take one inch of Rafa's mental toughness and you'll be the GOAT.

It can't be what you said. And I don't know if any real tennis fan can related to what you said.

The Roddick lose in Australia can not be taken seriously. Expecting players to perform under such conditions is ridicilous and embarassing for the Australian organizers. His victory in IW was well deserved, I'll give him credit there. As for the Andy Murray encounters, dissapointing for sure. But it's quite obvious that Djokovic IS the more talented and complete player. He has so much for variety and finese in his game that Murray does not. Let's not forget in Miami Djokovic on his serve had set points, had those worked out, the third set could have gone either way. I really think next time around Djokovic's complete game will outshine Murray's defensive boredom.

Djokovic slide started last year in Birmingham (I believe that's where the Stella Artois Championship is?) against Nadal (semis or finals..can't quite remember?) where he played tremendous in the first set, with everything going so well for him. However, something happened so suddenly in his head and he dropped tremendously. That drop has carried right over until, I'd say, Monte Carlo of this year. Despite the lose in the finals to me Djokovic was still a victor himself- He had regained his mental strength from the man that took it a year ago.

its got nothing to do with tennis fans. Im merely wondering how come so many people are wondering "how come Fed chokes so often nowdays?". Im simply speculating, on a completely innocent level I assure you, that what just might be the case, Is that our dear Rog was in fact never a mental giant, but "simply" a far superior tennis player in talent department compared to his past rivals.

how else can one explain such frequent chokes and those all too frequent tears, than by some fundamental quality or lack of it?

Fed did seem to swat at the ball late in the 3rd...but is he really losing these matches because he doesn't care? His collapses in 3rd sets against Djoko and Murray are reminiscent of his collapse at the Aussie Open final. Perhaps it's an issue of wanting it too much? Or a remarkable decline in self-belief?

Another solid performance by Roger this week, he got to the semis of a Master Series tournament and pushed the mighty current holder Nole to a 3rd set. He's improving on clay day by day and has his eyes now firmly set on the French, the one slam title that elludes him so far. I think this is his year.

Apologies for other Fed fans who felt offended with what I said. I guess, I need to change my perspective of Federer than expecting him to be out.

I enjoyed his dominance (ofcourse his tennis too) so I feel I should be there supporting him during his last few years on the tour (than asking him to quit).

He is a great champion but I guess his peak time might be over...

its got nothing to do with tennis fans.

C'mon, you're just a hater. "Simply speculating, on a completely innocent level". http://www.freeweb.hu/fenyokert/images/smileys/emotlol.gif Please. There were plenty occasions in the past when he could have folded easily if he were in the same mental state as today (against very good players, bad matchups, Nalbandian, Hewitt to name a few) The thing is, Roger is not the same. You can see that almost every single time, and not just against the top competition. Don't get me wrong, i think the better player wins almost every match (Roger is probably the 4th best player in the world right now), but that doesn't make your ridiculous statement true.

:shrug:Thought Roger played pretty well in the first set which was nice to see after some poor play lately. It's dissapointing that he couldn't play well enough to make the most of the opportunities he had at getting ahead in the match and possibly wrapping it up. Djokovic did well to cut down his own errors and not get discouraged when things weren't going his way.

"I feel this is not a match I should have given away because (I was a) break up in the second, break up in the third and I usually don't give away opportunities like this," Federer told a news conference.

"I was playing him well, serving well when I had to and putting him under pressure. The rain delay came at a perfect moment for him. But he might have come back anyway and beat me."

http://uk.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idUKTRE5411Q920090502

"I mean, the rain delay came at a perfect moment for him because he came through a tough service game at 2-0 down.

"Instead of going 3-0, he goes 2-1 and then the rain comes, so he's got something positive to look at.

"Then when he comes back conditions changed, so, sure, it helped him. But then again, who knows.

"He might have come back anyway and beat me in the end. He did well today to use the rain delay in his favor, that's for sure."

I know what you're saying, but it is really a poor excuse.

I remember watching the 2006 Fifa WC and being utterly disappointed when not only Italy kicked out my favourites, Germany, but to see them beat France while one of the best players of his generation had a moment of complete idiocy; this done with no more than negative defensive play and luck. i would say that if your oppenent chokes the win away you got kinda lucky...but you may have another viewpoint.

Does it means that all the times Roger faced an opponent who was in a position of winning a set (or even a match)and lost, he was lucky ?

Today Djokovic had the adequate reaction after being broken easily in the 3rd.Roger served at 3-1 and he showed him that he was still here, trying to play better and putting some pressure on returns. It was enough to make Federer collapse. That what was needed for him to win this match and he did it.
When you're Roger Federer, you're up *3-1 in the last set and you're opponent is not playing well, you HAVE to win the match. All Roger had to do was put his serve in and hold it 3 times. He wasn't able to do it, while Novak raised his game enough to win the last 5 games. No luck here.

At least he doesn't look like a chimp.;)
Tsonga hits his chest harder and even looks like King of Kongo.:p

Manon, I don't know you, nor do I wish to ever get to know you, but chill out. I don't like going up against fellow Novak fans, but if you write such crap to me again, I will have no other options.

HeretiC I gave credit to Roddick for IW. But I will not say that the better man won in Australia. I'd say the man that'd be a better candidate for the next edition of celebrity Surviror did. But wtf does that have to do with tennis.

if nadal cant beat this smug filth djokovic then rafa should retire too.

the worst thing is that no one likes that serbian guy, everyone hates him so much. probably the most arrogant and hated person in world tennis today along with the most hated family.

federer losing to that filth is an insult to humanity.

atleast we didnt have to see those ugly faces of srjan and divagina

why do bad people win over good people like djokovic win over federer! good guys should always beat evil.

only reason faker won because federer handed him the match. faker got lucky AGAIN.

faker is a scavenger, he feeds off other people's errors and out of form! i wonder if dijana has said the king is dead yet?

i just dont like seeing classless and quitters and fakers losing to champions like federer!

i told u faker cannot beat federer if not for some assistance, this time rain! faker got lukcky AGAIN!

:worship:

I know what you're saying, but it is really a poor excuse.

I remember watching the 2006 Fifa WC and being utterly disappointed when not only Italy kicked out my favourites, Germany, but to see them beat France while one of the best players of his generation had a moment of complete idiocy; this done with no more than negative defensive play and luck. I simply could not get over the fact that a team so bad won the WC.

sure it is a poor excuse. i don't use it as excuse. there is no excuse for playing bad, like fed did. either you deliver or you don't.
