All in all, a great inaugural tournament. So thrilled for him and Serbia.

Colour me a proud fan today. Despite the ups and downers and the misgivings about his biting off more than he could chew, I must say it's such a privilege to have witnessed his transformational journey from an imp of a player to impressionist to impresario. And all before he turns 22. :haha:

All credit and pats on the back to everyone involved for getting the tournament, setting it up and organising it superbly - that's not in dispute. Looks like they did a terrific job.

But I always recall Shaw's quote 'Patriotism is your conviction that your country is superior to all others because you were born in it.' and that clouds things for me, no matter the country.

Novak champion of SERBIA OPEN!

Novak Djokovic is the champion of Belgrade defeating Pole Lucacs Kubot in the final in straight sets 6:3, 7:6 (7:0). This is the Serbs 13th ATP career title.

“It is a great honor to be the first winner of SERBIA OPEN. This victory means the most to me in my whole career, as this was the first time I played in front of domestic audience. It was not easy, even though Kubot is ranked on a much lower position than I am. Now, I feel so much better, as I was under the great pressure the whole time, being the first favorite. All I would like to do tonight is to celebrate this victory with those closest to me“ Djokovic stated.
The champion received a cheque worth 75000 Euro and 250 ATP points while the runner-up received a cheque worth 39.700 Euro and 150 ATP points.
Pole who is currently ranked 179th on the ATP World Tour rankings has never reached a tournament final of this caliber. Kubot who made the main draw as a qualifier has also placed his name in history, by being the first Polish tennis player to have reached an ATP final in 27 years.
“I am more nervous now than when I was on court. I congratulate Novak and wish him all the best for the remainder of the season. The tournament has been fantastic and I believe that it will receive excellent appraisal. I will take many memorable moments with me from the week that has passed. I hope that I can regroup and concentrate on taking the doubles title. Thank you Serbia and I hope to see you again next year.”, Stated Kubot after his defeat.

Couldn't post sooner guys!
Watched Novak, but while at work (working in shifts lately).
So happy for him, he was really nervous today and I must say I loved that gutsy display by Kubot and great to see him win doubles, he deserved it!:worship:

I can't believe I couldn't attend at least one of Novak's matches, I was so busy this week.. But I tried to follow his progress on TV as much as I could.

I'd agree with most posters ceremony was a bit too long, but the part with soldiers, flag and anthem got me all teary eyed. It's a beginning of something completely new for our sport and country, and I wish them all the best.

And for the record, national anthem is played on every big match in every sport here, (for instance, in volleyball both teams' anthems are played before the match starts, etc.).

Now on the other hand, seeing Novak's face and name on virtually EVERYTHING inside the complex does get annoying. I mean, Aqua Novak? Chill, people. I do see the importance of marketing, but I'd get paranoid seeing the same 5 letters printed everywhere I turn.

I hope they'll tone it down next year. I understand the excitement and the overall hype, and it did make me smile a lot more than it made me frown, so let's let it slide.;)

Wishing you all the best in Madrid, Nole. You made me proud so long ago.:awww:

Serbia Open deserves upper tier

http://www.blic.rs/sports.php?id=4406

Game, set, match – in one word, a spectacle! A spectacle for Belgrade, Serbia, Novak Djokovic and his family and for the domestic game of tennis. The images of the Belgrade tennis event have been circulating the globe, while the tournament played at the M.G.M. tennis complex has passed the most rigorous trials and what will now follow are steps to upgrade Serbia Open into a Series 500 event as of next year.

http://www.blic.rs/sports.php?id=4398

Serbia gathered around tennis’

True, though after 2011 the calendar will change slightly because of some DC date changes, so it will be directly before Madrid but with nothing the week before it, and chances are that players may need extra clay practice before the Masters :) Hope so anyway.

:o Had to edit my above post you quoted, because the link was the wrong one - to 2011 and not 2010. :o I agree I doubt either of those two will play - but then they don't really play any of the smaller tournaments apart from their own local ones like Basel and Barcelona. I think some bigger names will probably start to come soon though - people like maybe Ancic, Verdasco or Berdych for example.

And I don't like the Madrid venue either - too big, not enough people, very little atmosphere. Such a shame when the old venue was so great in every way  Maybe it will liven up later in the week?

I agree. I always think the nicest courts at any tennis venue are the outside ones, where you can sit so close to the court and really get involved with the match and feel the atmosphere. It helps too, that those courts have "real" fans in the front rows, and not the endless Hospitality boxes and loges that you get on Central Courts, that are invariably empty, or full of people who are totally clueless about tennis :fiery:

Agree. In fact one of the (few) things I like about Wimbledon, is the fact that they do keep those tickets aside every day for people to queue up for, and they ARE front row ones too. So if you're prepared to sleep on the pavement and queue, then you're guaranteed to get the best seats in the house, and kick the corporate guests to the back of the stadium :D

I think Wimbledon have one of the best seats to watch Tennis they sit near the court almost like football stadiums:D

Yes they have, - I agree, though there is so much about the tournament that I don't like, and despite it being my local venue I rarely go more than once or twice each year :o

Well I could write you a very long list, but I will try and keep it short by saying......

1) The crowds - it is the most claustrophobic, crowded tournament out there, and if you get stuck in an alleyway between the outside courts you are literally stuck :spit:

2) The prices - astronomically expensive for food, drink etc and you're not able to bring picnic hampers or anything in, so it's hard to bring your own refreshments.

3) Ridiculous practice courts,- too far away and very hard to take photos on.

4) Far too much "tradition" - with people who think Wimbledon is the ONLY tennis tournament of the year, telling fans who travel on the circuit all year what to do and how to behave :spit:

5) Way, way too snobbish, and a really bad example of the old British class system

6) Endless queues for everything - not just to get in, but for every toilet, every refreshment stall, and every outside court.

7) Loads of idiot Brit tennis fans who think tennis begins and ends with Wmibledon and Andy Murray

8) Officious staff who think every spectator is a potential stalker and push you about if you even try to talk to any player, coach or girlfriend who you may know from previous tournamrnts.

9) Loads of :rain: which I admit is not Wimby's fault, but can be extremely irritating.

That will do for starters - but there are MANY, MANY more :tape: Of course some people love it, - everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I would choose Roland Garros over it every time.

Serbia gathered around tennis’

“The entire event exceeds our wildest dreams. The audience was perfect. The people from the ATP have told us we have set new standards in the ATP Series 250.”

So glad to hear about it. Yes, Serbia you have just proved to the world!
Again it reminds me of the thirst China has in proving to the world with the Olympics!
Nice job, Serbia! :yeah:

I agree about outdoor courts being the best venues. That's why I'm so disappointed with Madrid this year. It is supposed to be an outdoor clay, but the courts look very "auditorium" to me.

I thought the same. Maybe it's raining and they have the roof closed? I don't like it at all. And those metal seats look so cold and uncomfortable.

Sorry :o I'm sure one day you'll come yourself and draw your own conclusions. I just hate it - always have. I wouldn't go at all if it wasn't for the fact it's so local that it seems criminal to have live tennis so close and not go. I'd never EVER quere or pay though :o If I can't get a freebie from someone I won't bother :o

:yeah: It's the way I always do it :o Though admittedly Wimby is far easier for me than any other tourney, because there are always local people working there or members of local clubs who can find the odd spare one. Usually means I don't know whether I have one or not until the night before though  so I can only go after work because it's too late notice to book a days' holiday.

Evening :D

Forgotten how much I've always liked Ivan  :bounce: Nice one :yeah: Raquel will be so happy - she will not have him metaphorically blocking her view in Madrid. :D

I concur with Rosie's views on Wimbledon; I used to go regularly with friends and sleep on the pavement to get tickets when I was a student, bringinging cheap sparkling wine and strawberries to help the mood along. Great fun but talk about being treated like peasants. Haven't been for some years now but have no reason to think it's improved:rolleyes:

I have been to Wimbledon three years ago and I actually quite like it. Probably I am the foreigner and that was my first time to see my favourite players playing. Everything was just so amazing to me. The queue, the strawberry, the souvenirs (I particularly love the ball keychain and Wimbledon towel...)

Maybe I was just blind. :p
