Soderling played very well the first set, and the result was 6-1. Nadal played his best match in the clay season, but for the service, where his percentage was a little low. Itīs difficult to imagine even that Rafa can drop a set in this tournament.

I don't blame Rafa for wanting to make Soderling look like a puppet. Soderling was so disgusting all the match: never apologised when ball touched the net a make him win a point or this stupid discussion with the umpire for a dead point.

Yeah, I'm sure he cares a lot about his challenger results when he's a US Open QFist.

If you don't remember, Muller owned Nadull in 2005, when the balls weren't as heavy and slow as today. ;) He was right - until they changed the balls and made it slow like crap.

There are some details that you omit.

1) Nadal was a 18 years old boy who played his first Wimbledon. He had barely played before on grass

2) Nadal was exhausted after winning his first RG and all the previous clay season. In fact I remember that he considered to avoid Wimbledon this year.

3) Muller owned Nadal? The match's result was 6-4 4-6 6-3. In this match Muller served extremely well

4) Muller had not played the previous day because his opponent (Montilla) was injured

But if you prefer believe in conspiracy theories, avanti

I remember this match. Every time Muller had a problem he made an ace. Simply Muller had his great serve day, maybe because he was rested and fresh and this was the key why he won. Nadal fatigue and inexperience made the rest.

Well, that was as absolute a beatdown as I've ever seen. Marvelous to watch Rafa relax a little bit and toy with Soderling before going in for the clean kill. The touch on those three dropshot-gets left Soderling completely flummoxed, staggering around like a man in a hurricane.

Ever since Miami, I've been worried Rafa wasn't having enough fun out there on court  . His obsession with politesse and good relations is a good lesson for our youth and all of that, but I think he needed to release some venom from his Babolat.

The field will take notice: you can piss Rafa off, but you will pay the price.

Dude, Toad doesnīt even care about tennis, all he wants is to have a nice toad life in some icy pond with some hot girlfriend who comprehends him and some Lyon trophies...he also donīt care about clay tennis you know...if someday they create an ice indoor court in Lyon he can maybe win another set of Nadal..tennis is ugly game..toad is not ugly. :p

yo home boy kick back and chill. tennis is not an "ugly game". there is no sport on the face of the planet that offers the grace, power, and the magic that tennis offers.

you can demolish somebody both mentally and physically without even laying a finger on them. in fact, you can ruin somebody`s life with your racquet if you are good enough.

i have studied a lot sports since that is my hobby and i have even studied all the olympics since 1956 olympics at Melbourne but i have never seen better all around athletes than those i see in tennis at the top of the sport.

just take Nadal for instance: he is considered to have the speed that rivals the fastest corner backs in the NFL. this guy--with his god given gift of vo2max (maximal oxygen uptake) could have easily been a great middle distance runner or an elite cyclist. he is not bad at soccer either.

Fed could have been a world class soccer player. Nole and Murray could have played any number of sports and done well in them.

guys like Borg, Mac, Lendl, and Nastase and so many others could have dominated in any number of sports. i actually saw Nasty (Nastase) in his late 40`s at an exo. the guy was still ridiculous. there was nothing he could not do not do on the court.

tennis is anything but ugly. at the top of game, you are required to be agile, athletic, fast, strong, graceful, and have superb physical and mental endurance.

no other sport demands so much to be among the best of the best.

I know what you are saying I beat a guy 6-0 6-1 other day. But I still thought it was ugly.

Ironies off, not everyone has the patience to beat a little ball every time over a net. I really believe Nadal just like you said would be a great athlete... making castle of cards..he would also find lots of fun doing sisifus job probably.

Nadal had one objective other than winning the match: teach Soderling a lesson and 'tell' him that respect is part of tennis. And he achieved his goal.

I've never seen Nadal looking so focused since Australia. Anything other than 6–1 6–0 would have been a failure to him! He let his tennis tell Soderling how he felt about his behaviour at 'that' Wimbledon match. I really enjoyed it!

But Soderling resorted to other unsporting tricks like pointing at a mark which was 3 feet away from the actual mark in dispute. It was clear to me, to the umpire, to the crowd, and I'm sure to Nadal too. And then he took it out to the umpire. Luckily tennis doesn't have many Soderlings.

Well done Rafael. Objective achieved yet again. Two of them actually!

Yeah, I'm sure he cares a lot about his challenger results when he's a US Open QFist.

If you don't remember, Muller owned Nadull in 2005, when the balls weren't as heavy and slow as today. ;) He was right - until they changed the balls and made it slow like crap.

Check. Facts.

Nadull isn't number 1 nor Wimbledon champion. That's a travesty.

Your comment isnīt fair al all. Nadal has improved a lot in fast courts during last years, winning MS in hard and indoor and AO, for example. Even when he was a junior, and situation hadnīt change the way you are implying, Nadalīs results in grass were excellent.

Yes, he got Soderling in a bad phase.;)
Itīs like beating 5-0 a team on football and this team having a lot of balls on the post. Sods simply couldnīt deliver his goal...whatever..
And donīt come saying Iīm wrong.
I donīt care ;) Too many spanish flags in this thread, no?

Yup, that wasn't very sportsmanlike
HOWEVER, the ball WAS out (hawkeye showed it clearly) and the umpire screwed up
It was pretty ugly that he couldn't find the mark, it made the umpire look ridiculous

Rafa is a beast. I have no idea how he can stay so focused EVERY single point. Come on spaniard, share some of that energy to the other players, to make it more even.

You are right, the ball was out but that is irrelevant since hawkeye is not allowed on clay matches. The umpire DID point to the right mark and made the decision to replay the point based on his observation. AFTER the umpire's decision Soderling demanded to see the mark again and the umpire was honest enough to admit that he 'lost the mark'. Which is fair, because by then they had moved away from it with Soderling animated pointing yet again to another mark from a previous point.

Basically during the match Soderling knew exactly what Nadal was trying to tell him and upset him immensely and had to take it out to somebody: a good and fair umpire.

The score is very true indeed – nothing false about it and Soderling has to live with it. Defending and defusing break points is one the sport's greatest objectives! It can deliver wins. And it did.

"I think the match was really tough,"

"At the beginning I was winning 4 1, but at the same time I could be losing 4 1."

Nadal on Verdasco: "But if I am playing my best, I hope I'll have my chances for victory."

How is it irrelevant that the ball was out? That should have been a break point for Soderling and a chance to get back on serve. So it was a very important point and I can understand that Soderling got upset. He took it a bit far though (as usual).

I didn't mean the point was irrelevant. What hawkeye showed was irrelevant because it's not allowed on clay matches. The umpire decided for the point to replayed because clearly he couldn't decide with a naked eye whether the ball was in or out. But Soderling wasn't upset about that. He was upset because the umpire wouldn't base his judgement on a mark that he (Soderling) selected! (which was about 3 feet away from the actual mark). The umpire made a fair decision and Soderling's lie was exposed to the crowd who reacted – naturally :)

Well, I honestly believe that is what he thinks, that he can lose to anyone no matter the score. That would explain why he nearly broke his neck chasing a ball at 6-1 5-0 30-0 or something like that.

Also letting aside the "revenge" thing, he was also about to finish sodderling in Wimby, remember? then he failed to close the match and needed 3 more days to win.

Nadal's 2nd match in Rome was also dominant in his previous title runs, in 2005 against Canas, 2006 against Henman, 2007 against Youzhny. I hope we also get a very interesting match later on in the tournament, I can only see Nadal challenged potentially only in the final.

People take it so literally is very funny. I know that defendind break points is tennis dude, I play for more than 12 years since I was a kid and I do it all the time, and tennis scores never really reflect what was the game, some 6-4 6-4 victories should bring more shame than this 61 60.

Anyway I invite everyone to post on Soderling Forum, the best one after Amer Delic one.:p

Why does Nadal hate Berdych?

I don't think he hates Berdych and I think it was an one-off incident:

Berdych made a shush gesture to the Spanish audience during the Madrid Masters against Nadal. That was his way of telling them "I'm having the last laugh here". It wasn't done very nicely and Nadal told him at the time (there and then) that that wasn't a way to treat spectators.
