Mathieu up a set and 4-2, then takes a page from Safin and blows it again.

It's just pathetic. 20 posts and not a single mention of Zverev. This is probably the best clay tournament he'll ever have in his career.

The German has now won three successive matches from a set down. Ferrero, Berdych and Mathieu are huge scalps on clay.

With Simon's current form he might even have a shot at the QF. This must have been inspired by fellow countryman and lefty Andreas Beck in Monte-Carlo.

I'm interested to know how he's doing it.

He plays a nice attacking style on grass with sv every point but on any other surface he looks like a pusher with no game whatsoever.

Volleying can be very effective here in Rome. Besides Stepanek, Fish also had a lot of success charging the net against Andreev and Verdasco.

Looking further back, Rusedski defeated Boredo here. And of course back in the 90s Rome had a Becker-Sampras final. If Wimby is green clay, this must be red grass.

Good stuff Mischa, my second-favourite player on the tour nowadays. Nice to see a guy with the guts to play a classic style having some well-deserved success.
