As usual, Roger really needed just to be patient and the errors would come in any case.
Though Karlovic showed flashes of good forehand at times.

what form? he hardly put more than 4 shots in a rally, you can never read into anyone's form based on a Karlovic match, he didn't need to go for too much on his forehand, it's when he takes more risks that shows how good his form and timing is, beating Karlovic is not a challenge for Fed on clay.

Correct and therefore it should be left as it is without making any hasty conclusions. Stepanek match should give us some insights about his form, his defense and consistency of his ground-strokes.

A great test really, and even in a Karlovic match, is the state of Federer's midcourt forehand. In his prime, he absolutely crushed these with ease for a winner 99.9% of the time, by far his most dominant shot. Early in the first match, he was in a similar position, where the Federer of old would've smacked a ball up the line for an easy winner, Fed instead chose to do some sort of block/slice inside out forehand which missed badly. It's these types of tactics and execution which tells me mentally Federer is still not there.

However, having said that, he did look a bit better in the second set. As has been said, a win is a win, see ya tomorrow champ. :)

Taking into account how hard Roger has workes over the last week or so and the fact that his serve and especially forehand was consistent i feel good about this match. I dont see him losing to Crapanek or Lalo playing like this. I mean really its not like Fed has suddenly become this huge mug. MC he wasnt even ready, he just showed up to see what he has to improve.

He was two break points down in the first set and smacked two forehand winners.

Federer barely breaks sweat in Karlovic cruise

Federer came to the court against the all-serve game of Ivo Karlovic and fired his lone ace on match point against 15 for the Croatian in a 6-4, 6-4 win.

"I can't judge this kind of kind of a match because it's not real tennis with Ivo because it's all about reaction," said two-time Rome finalist Federer, still seeking his first 2009 title after winning his last in October.

"This was more like a hardcourt match - just hoping to get through. It's a real tough one to have as a first round.

"I just wanted to get out there and have some fun and play some tennis again in a match situation. It gave me information. I practised really hard, so I feel better," he said after losing in the Monte Carlo third round less than a week after getting married.

The new MTF trolls don't need attention. 13-year-old kids held signs with lines: "Quiet Genius" and "Please win Federer. I skipped 7th grade P.E. class to spend my mom's money on your match." That was when Canas and Volandri watched Federer's volley fly off the court.
As the trolls have said in 2007, before Mr. Mono and bitches beat him, the trolls are saying "Oh, well."

Nothing to take from this match really, Karlovic's has no game on clay, or on any surface for that matter.

sammy01
04-29-2009, 11:51 PM
i agree with the poster who said you cant judge anything with a match against karlovic, especialy since on clay a match with karlovic goes against what fed struggles with i.e on clay he tends to lose longer rallies whereas against karlovic the longer the rally the more chance of fed winning it.

still im pretty sure fed will take any straight sets win over anyone right now, he needs matches.

His post was actually kinda positive -- not to mention insightful -- if you don't think Federer is a faultless god. Until Federer is hitting his forehand with ease and winning on the regular again, people are going to have doubts.

I don't follow Federer on the daily between tournaments, so what hard work has been putting in this past week?

It's overdue, that's for sure. Federer can be back in vicious form sooner than later if he improves his core conditioning and gets rid of the small gut he's been growing the last year or two. A lot of people say his problem is strictly mental, but that's not the case -- getting some snap back into his physicality will in turn improve the way he feels period.
